No, that was a while ago and the jars got tossed after like two weeks when there was still no sign things were picking up. Even if they might have grown out eventually, there didn't seem much value in keeping such a weak culture since it would've almost certainly lost any fight with contaminants when spawned to bulk.
The other potential variable here is that I typically toss plates in the fridge if they're close to done but I don't have grains prepped yet. This is pretty much always fine with cubes and stones (I recently dropped a year-old GT plate to grains and it took off like no time had passed at all), but it hasn't worked out so well for pans, and it sounds like others have had the same experience. So this could also be part of the issue - if pan myc is damaged by the cold, then it's possible the genetics weren't bad but the cultures had been weakened and that inhibited colonization.
I've got four clean looking plates growing out now that are fast and wispy but just super thin (on standard 2% MEA, so it's probably not the agar). Might be worth tossing one or two to grains just to see if they step up their game, and will get pics then if I do.

@jcm- you store cultures in the fridge don't you? How do you do it, did you say an insulated food bag or something? Do you know what temperature it holds in the bag.
It'd be good to nail down how to preserve pan cultures. I had a nice one, fucked up my grains and then had to go back to spore. Not a big deal cus they grow pretty quick but it'd be nice to just take it out the fridge the day before and then nocc up

Has anyone ever let a culture grow out on agar near completion and then just lift the same transfer piece to a new plate? What would happen? Would it grow out the same?

Yeah the Aussie I just ran had very light myc, almost like lions mane. I was told that’s normal for pan trop.
This was right before casing, it’s 100% colonized.

i wrap all my slants/plates in a few layers of papertowls then il wrap it in a layer or 2 of tinfoil just to hold the papertowels secure to it.then il place them in an insulated cooler bag/lunch bag but il leave it unzipped just an inch or so to still allow air so they dont suffocate.
this will keep almost all of the condensation away pending how often you open and close the fridge. but i also do this cuz pan myc is pretty sensitive to colder temps like that. and without that extra insulation you run the risk of them not living. although bruising can be normal also so dont worry too much about it unless its extremely bad and on the verge of killing it in that case i add a cpl more layers but that never happened.
of coarse its always best to use a sepperate fridge so your not constantly opening n closing it
i like it at no colder than 40deg

Cool, I'm gonna give that a go. Hopefully that way I don't have to start from spore everytime I fuck up between now and success

god no that would be terrible. i always store my streak plate and a cpl transfer plates from the plate i put to grain. that way should somethin happen i can just go back to a known clean culture or worst case the streak plate. but once i get fruits i like and get a clone or so to work with all those go in the trash and i only save what im working on. then once i find my best possible fruiter il toss all the other masters as well with exception of maybe the 2nd best as a back up.
then i also like to transfer to new slants after about 9 mnths. when i do that il pull it out and let it wake up and get movin for a few days then make the transfer(s) to new slants an let it get a good foothold in the new slant b4 putting back in cold storage

Ya that what i tried to do with a couple of Alabama T1's but I only put them in a Ziploc bag and then in the veg tray of the fridge. When I took them out they just never recovered, tried chucking one to grain but it never jumped off. I'll give your method a go though, pretty sure I've got a cooler bag kicking about.
I've made mincemeat of my bama print at this point so I'm onto a wild coast print from AKA. I have a couple of cubes on the go but all my efforts are on pans atm. New grains, new grain prep, new fc, learning to pasturise, it's a real learning curve coming from coir based unmodded monos

Nah you didn't, I've got some remnants of the Alabama, a Texas and a wild coast. Hopefully I'll be taking the wild coast to grains next weekend so you can expect a picture of spawn coming soon (fingers crossed). If you have one your willing to part with though I'd love to give it a go, your pics always look the bomb.

You did, you sent a load of cubes, a Nat, and a wild coast. I'm running your wild coast for LAGM, got an awesome colony on the germ plate, managed to take like 7 xfers from it today

Huh I must’ve not been able to find the bag with jams in it. Of the few pans I’ve done I’d say jams are the best to start out with but wild coast is a good alternative.
