Hey guys!

As my username implies, I’m an old fart that’s just getting started with pan cyans.

I’ve learned a ton from this thread, so thank you to all who’ve contributed. Now it’s time to put this education into action.

I’m curious why the mycelium in these two jars are vastly different even though they’re both pan cyans. The jar on the left is BVI, the one on the right is Estero.

From your experience, is one better (healthier, stronger, etc) than the other, or just different?

I’ll get better at providing more details — thank you for the nudge!

Confirming I inoculated the grain jars from spore syringes, both at the same time. Did this using the open oven method since I don’t have a flow hood or still air box (but I’ll be making one soon). Both jars were kept in a warm cupboard next to each other.

From what I’ve read on GordoTek’s site, Estero is pretty fast. So fingers crossed this is what’s causing the difference, versus a contaminated BVI.

What’s the smallest container someone’s grown pan cyans in?

Do you think bigger (wider, taller) or smaller (thinner, shorter) containers effect yield? Sorry if this is a dumb question!

I had a tray of pan cyans (Australians) finally start pinning after 3 weeks of sitting in my martha. However, after a few days, I noticed trich growing on the opposite corner of the tray. So I removed the section of substrate/casing with the pins and put it into a shallow mason jar, then disposed of the remaining tray. 4 days later, the pins are growing quickly (albeit very skinny) and I'm not seeing any signs of trich.

My questions are:
1. Has anyone attempted something similar?
2. Are they safe to eat, as long as I don't see signs of trich?
3. Do you harvest them when the caps flatten out?

Sorry for the double post, but I had some follow-up questions about casing and pinning.

Below are pictures of Estero 4 days after being cased.
- I'm using two 9 x 6 x 2" trays and one tiny takeout tray (2" high)
- The casing is a blend of peat moss, vermiculite, gypsum, and calcium phosphate.
- The casing is around 1/4" thick

Here are my questions:
1. Is there a reason why more mycelium is poking through the casing on the takeout tray vs. the larger trays?
2. For those who've had successful grows with pan cyans, did your trays show a similar amount of mycelium poking through?

Thank you to everyone for your help! As I've mentioned before, I learn something new and useful from you all each day.

You guys both rock! Thank you so much for answering my questions and providing context from your unique experiences with pans.

@Hindsight: Confirming I used the same spawn ratio in the big trays and small tray. However, the small tray was placed near the bottom of my martha while the bigger trays were placed near the top. Assuming the larger trays received more humidity and warmer temperatures than the small one. One other thing (which I should have called out in my original post): I did two spore syringes to two different grain jars, so the delta between the trays may be related to genetics. Just a thought.

Thanks again!

Since I’ve never harvested pan cyans before, and recently learned that not all pan cyan caps flatten out at maturity, can someone please advise whether these are ready to be picked? My hunch says yes, but I’m a total novice here.

Third attempt at growing pans. Had 5 trays either contaminate or not fruit. Had one tray produce a small patch of the tiniest, skinniest things I’ve ever seen, albeit so cool looking. Then, on my recent attempt, I dialed in my tent, used the knowledge I’ve learned here, and relied on gut feeling — and I’m finally starting to see pins! Not the best set, but it makes me happy. Growing things is so much fun, and satisfying!

Sharing my recent progress with Estero. I don’t have a full canopy, almost all of them have fuzzy feat, some darkish caps (from what i believe is too high humidity), and they aren’t as beautiful looking as the other flushes I’ve seen shared here. But I’m glad to have an abundance of fruiting trays nonetheless!

From the advice I’ve received here, I’m tempted to harvest these today (even some of the smaller ones; leave the pins though), pour 1/4-1/2C of water on them and get ready for another flush. Please let me know if anyone disagrees!

What causes pan cyan caps and stems to turn dark? Is it usually from excessive watering?

Hey guys!

Didn't see anyone answer my question from a few days back, so was hoping someone could take a look and let me know their thoughts:

What causes pan cyan caps and stems to turn dark?

Good to know, and makes sense considering I had a fairly heavy mist falling over them from my humidifier (1 min every 13 min; dial was turned up to a 5 out of 10 intensity).

How do you avoid the bluing of the stems and caps, while still retaining high humidity levels and ensuring the pans are properly watered?

Thank you Adas and Baba Yaga! Really helpful information and context.

The two sources of fresh air in my martha are 1) the humidifier (placed outside the tent) and 2) slits cut in the tent. I'm going to experiment with a small computer fan, attached near the top, that pushes fresh air in, to see if that improves my fruits.

For those growing pans in a martha, it sounds like the most popular misting option is a disc fogger, followed by an ultrasonic humidifier. Can someone help me understand why?

Also, there seems to be a lot of opposition on other threads against using reptile foggers — why is this? I tried researching but couldn’t find any deeper context other than people just saying to not use them.

I have a local source for very high quality alpaca and goat manure. Has anyone ever tried these in place of horse/cow manure?

I’d like to try Asura’s method of growing pans, but instead of inoculating with liquid culture, using agar wedges.

Has anyone tried this? If not, is that because it’s a silly idea?

I’ve always wondered what is considered to be too dry or too wet, as it relates to casing layers. Below are pictures of my current trays, which I placed into fruiting conditions three days ago. The casing appears to be glistening with water, but there aren’t pools of standing water (at least from what I can tell). When I tip the trays over, no water pours out. Would love to get everyone’s feedback: too dry, too wet, or just right?

I live in a very dry climate, so my cycle times are as follows:
- 3 min fog
- 2 min fan (comes on during last 1:30 of fog), pumping in fresh air from outside of tent; humid air is pushed out bottom of tent
- 7 min rest
- Total cycle time = 10 min

This is my second attempt at pans. While I haven't accomplished an epic canopy like others on this site have, I'm still having fun and enjoying the learning process.

I'm grateful to everyone on this thread who's shared their knowledge, but I'd like to give a particularly big shoutout to Hindsight (thank you for your patience with all of my questions and wonky ideas!).

Process: Print > agar > grain > martha
  • Prints: Estero, BVI, Bisporus
  • Agar: 8g LME, 8g agar powder, 400ml hot water
  • Grain: White millet
  • Substrate: 4 parts finely chopped straw, 2 parts manure, 1 part vermiculite, 1/4C gypsum, 2,000ml water
  • Casing: 2,000ml peat moss, 2,000ml vermiculite, 2Tbsp calcium hydroxide, 1,000ml water

I used to buy all of my equipment and materials from a vendor, but I'm now owning every step in the process -- whether it's agar work, grain prep, etc.

Martha Setup:
  • Room is heated at 80 degrees
  • Small humidifier is placed in the corner of the room, set at 40 RH
  • 80mm House of Hydro fan attached at top of tent and blows air in
  • One reptile fogger ducts into the top of tent, the other ducts in near the bottom. Both are sitting outside of tent
  • Newer trays are placed at the bottom. They are then moved upwards as they progress through the fruiting stage

Cycle Parameters:
  • Fog: 3 min
  • Rest: 30 sec
  • FAE: 1 min
  • Rest: 9:30 min
  • TOTAL: 14 min

Only two Bisporus pins. I might keep those trays on the lower shelves throughout the entire grow, given that I hear they can handle lower temps (and it’s coolest near the bottom of the tent). May not make a difference, but worth the learning opportunity.
