Watched a long video of Gordo's yesterday, he went on about manure not really being needed quite a bit, and was adamant we'd be able to simply use straw or straw pellets instead. Says that they are not really dung lovers but grass lovers, that's what ruminant animal dung is anyway right
But of course if you have to pasteurize everything anyway because it's straw, then there is little difference in workup if you add some manure to the bag when you are forced to pasteurize anyway
moving into Pans myself, can tell this is going to be somewhat of a challenge coming from cubes but they tell me the rewards are large and well worth any added fuckery. It's exciting but I am honestly unsure if I can provide the right setup currently, hope to come back and join you guys soon. I have some Bisporus and Jamaica on grain already, but not very far along. Gonna streak up a bunch of various Pans today for LAGM

just limed peat, maybe a little above neutral pH she really went gangbusters soon as the casing was applied, before that she looked weak and whispy

That's interesting Jake also talking about the failing after first shake, I must've missed that while reading somehow... that is pretty much my interpretation of what I have seen on my Nec-D and Goliath spawn for LAGM
it is still going, but man is it slow now. May have to start again with those from spore possibly I guess

Pan Jam, set and forget unmodded tub, flush one

this worked pretty good but took a lot longer than my other tub to pin, not sure if it was culture or environment though, I think more air might've made them pin sooner, but mostly morphology was ok with a few very decent size individuals
the other tub I pic'd some days back put out 152g second flush then trich started turning up, so yeah was like just over 250g from a quart of spawn, not great I'm sure, but I am happy to be getting some numbers on the board
I had taken three dishes of clone and a half dozen prints from the last Jam tub, but all three dishes are completely overrun with bacterial goop. I dunno how that is possible from inner stipe material but I am gonna try again with a fruit from this tub I reckon I'll come back with some more stuff in a bit, have some Bisporus starting up it's first pins just now
good times fellas

Thanks fellas for the encouragement
yes, the water agar. I always forget that part of the toolkit Baba
Due another pour tomorrow so I will surely make a few water plates if not a whole sleeve I can keep off to the side ready to go
And yes they were tested last week Shrimps but I have another one lined up for tomorrow night probably. Did 33g wet last time, was underwhelming at first and then sorta peaked very strong and very late, was pretty good in the end. Think I will probably wade in a bit deeper this time, I think 33 wet is maybe only like a dry sixteenth of an ounce or something right, so more is probably called for I guess lol
I will surely let you know how it goes mate
nice one

yes just to add I have been running entirely strawless so far also fellas
mine is a bagged composted manure at about 30%, pasteurized
then added to standard bucket tek coir 70%
works alright and is easy prep
straw, straw pellets and hemp straw will also be trialed once I have a respectable clone, but for starters this produces decent results for us so far

interesting that you added startrex to that mix
is your current theory there that the added beneficial soil microbes play a role in protecting the pasteurized substrate?
I was gonna try something similar but using EM-1 and woodchips for woodlovers... wonder how mostly lacto strains of bacteria play with indoor things like Pans too now that I have seen you do this
please keep us posted

have not used either yet but I believe Baba made some compost work fine, so long as the compost had some manure in it to begin with, which I guess almost all thermal compost does have at some point the worm castings can be very dense and muddy when wet, I know from gardening with them

guess it will depend on the consistency of your manures, 50/50 would produce a sub that was too dense and muddy with the bagged composted manure I have available. Actual straight weathered horse poo will never really have that muddy consistency, but I can't get it reliably so I take a commercial product and must be careful with the mix to make it work nice

yeah mine is never dry in the bag, but I imagine if the moisture level is kept good and the manure was aged to begin with, the life is pretty long, you will pasteurize it anyway. I have never had any for more than a year or two and sometimes the bagged stuff smells a little anaerobic when you first get it, but after mixing it up and pasteurizing it it all works fine
