Nice grow.

For extra info on an easy way to do pans see the link in my signature.

Also I just got around to innoculating some cinctulus today.  With a variation to my regular pan cake mix.  I'll update the process in this thread.

With your "pan-cakes" I assume you used an MS syringe to inoculate through the holes in the dish. What are your contam rates with doing this method, considering that you're using sterilized manure in the mix and an MS syringe that is never 100% sterile..

Yes.  MS.  No problems with contamination usually.

One way to avoid contamination is to grow the spores out on agar and then make an agar slurry syringe to inoculate with.

Will you be using your "pan cake mix" for the cinctulus?

It's basically the same except I used field cured horse poo and no worm castings (I ran out).

anyone got any recipes they have tested/ liked?

I used:

1 part horse poo
1 part vermiculite
1 part shredded grass seed
1 part water
1 tablespoon used coffee
1 pinch of gypsum

I'll update when/if it works.

also, do you have a trip report? I keep hearing pans are DARK... Bullshit?

I heard they get darker the more you venture out there.  Personally I'm too scared to try.

I'm trying to grow this pan species out.:

They were found in a mulched (wood) tree bed.

It's been a tough one.

My original recipe yielded this:

And then they aborted.

I haven't worked with them since but recently tried to put them to a modified H-Poo cake recipe.  It's slow going but they are developing.  I'll post results if I have any.

In other news....I started to get into the stone makers.  I have a jar each of Ps. mexicana (Chicon Nindo), Ps. galindoi (#7), and Ps. tampanensis going and they all have stones forming nicely.

They form blue/green psuedo-sclerotia.

Not sure if they are worth trying to save.

Pan Cam only a few days after a swipe. Digging the grain water agar.

What dilution ratio did you use for the Grain water?  Ive been wanting to try some to germinate some Pan spores, but ive read people have problems with 50/50 GW and some have trouble with 30/70 GW (grain water/water)

I used like 20/80 and my pans and tamps showed germination in 3 days... but it's my first time with either so that ain't sayin much without anything to compare to.

20% grain water?

I was thinking about trying 30% grain water 70% water.

Use 100% grass seed drain water and you'll never look back.

Just my experience.

Have you been replenishing the water in the casing?  You can't let the Casing dry out too much or they will abort.  Use something to drip water around the pins if you don't want to mist.  Just don't drown them either.

Hopefully you'll get more.

I beg to differ.

I've found bisporus to be more.

I've also found them to be cleaner.  Cyans are called blue meanies for a reason.  At higher doses Cyans can be difficult.

People with experience with pans know what I'm talking about.

Either way, they are all mostly comparable.

I'm just biased for bisporus.  It's my favorite mushroom of all time.

No argument on my part.  I was just plugging bisporus since I find it cleaner.

To each their own.

Pans are really too close for a definitive answer for that.  You'll like any that you can get to fruit.

I really think what I found in wood chips isn't cinctulus then.

Although everyone ID'd them as cincs:

But, I've tried several times with several different substrates (not wood yet though) and all I have been able to produce was this.

Even though I have been successful with other grass loving pan species.  Remember this one cron?

Which really did look very much like cincts.

I'm at a loss as to what those wood dwelling pans were.......

Right.

I have another cinct print from another user.  Maybe I should try that one to see if it's the species or my growing.

Have you been successful with cincts before?

I've thought maybe Psathyrella as well.  It would explain them not fruiting from my pan-cakes.  Although those mottled gills kinda point to pans.

I'll try the cinct print I received from saralove in the near future to see if I can get those to fruit.

Btw d0urd3n......I saw your cinct grow on the other thread.  Good stuff.

I wrote my chronicles with the pan-cake tek so that those who haven't tried spawning to bulk yet (pasturizing etc.) could have a simple way to produce pans while getting their feet wet (pun intended) in casing.

If you are looking for bulk go the tray or monotub route.

There are many grows in this thread alone.  I'm sure people will be happy to help out.

ps:  Don't get me wrong though.  You can produce enough with the cakes to keep you happy.  This is one flush from 4 cakes :
