TooL Addicts thread 2

Alright well I looked for a recent Tool thread to get in on, since discussing their music is one of my favourite things lol.
However they are all kind of old, so I figured I'd start a new one.
Well as the title says, I'm kind of a Tool addict. I discovered their music shortly after I started smoking weed. I had heard from a friend that they were psychedelic, and that intrigued me.
So I remember being ripped out of my mind and I put on Eulogy. This was literally the first song I heard by them. The intro with the layering of rhythms, followed by that exotic guitar/bass riff, and I knew that there was something to this music. As I listened further and the song gets immediately heavy, and I fell into a trance. The rest is history.
I was sucked into their art, every time I'd get super high, I would put on The Patient, or The Pot, or 46 & 2, and I'd feel the music take me to new levels. This is what causes me to be addicted to their music, the fact that you can be stoned, and then you can lay back and listen to Tool and it's just like magic. One thing I'd love doing is like focusing in on listening to each individual instrument. I would hear the drum patterns and it would make my head spin. I would listen to Maynards voice in astonishment, like how does this guy make his voice seem so vast and then so small? Adam Jones is like George Harrison, he shines so brightly because of how much he completes the bands sound. He doesn't come out up front very often, but when he does it's not about an exhibit of his skills, it's about playing perfect, emotional, powerful notes. The first time I listened to Reflection I almost cried during that one climatic solo.
I could go on and on, which is why I feel somewhat addicted. Like they're kind of all I want to listen to. I've listened to a lot of other music too, Floyd, Zepp, Beatles, Hendrix, Yes, the classics, but for some reason I keep coming back to Tool.
I honestly think their music structure is designed so flawlessly, that it's borderline magic. Especially on acid lol. Like, did they implement these psychedelic music concepts to make their music?
And before people roast me, I'd like it to be known that I'm pretty new to psychedelics so it's not like I've had much of a chance to experience a lot of different music while tripping.
I don't know if I made this in hope that fellow Tool fans would discuss this stuff with me, or maybe I just want to see if other people have this almost crazy obsession and if they moved on.

Tool has some of the best music imo. Their music doesn't go stale. I have been listening to them for years and each album still rocks me.
Disappointed they haven't released their new album yet

I'm right there with you man, and Eulogy is probably my favorite song. They're easily my favorite of all modern era bands..and by modern era I mean after the 90's.

Every time I go to the gym I put on Undertow by Tool. That album gets me pumped like nothing else. All their other albums are great but Undertow is legit an album I listen to every single god damn time.

Yeah, that album does set apart from the others.
As overplayed as Sober's been, I still "jam" it like I haven't heard it in years.

Sober is gold but Bottom holds a special place in my heart.
If I let you, you would make me destroy myself In order to survive you, I must first survive myself I can sink no further, and I cannot forgive you There's no choice but to confront you, to engage you, to erase you I've gone to great lenghts to expand my threshold of pain I will use my mistakes against you, there's no other choice I'm shameless now, I'm nameless now, I'm nothing now, I'm no one now But my soul must be iron 'cause my fear is naked I'm naked and fearless And my fear is naked Dead inside, dead inside, dead inside
When those lyrics drop you know I'm busting out a stupid great set

Yeah, Tool are bloody awesome. Aenima is one of my all time favourite albums. On acid it's just bliss - you can really hear the music pulsing and rolling along like a galloping ball of colours.

Tool is pretty legit. I used to listen to them a bunch back in the 90's. I don't listen to them as much anymore, and am not really familiar with much of their stuff after Aenema

You should really check out Lateralus.
In fact, you absolutely need to do this sooner than later.

Tool was one of the first bands I ever heard. Heard them several times a day on the radio. My grandfather is good friends with the guy who makes Danny Carey's drums so I've gotten really good seats to see them a few times. I've seen them four times total and I'm going to see them on Halloween and Primus is playing too. I think aenima and lateralus are perfect from start to finish
Btw op Eulogy is my favorite song by them

Yeah, I only stressed Lateralus so much because it'd be a more familiar/recognizable Tool for someone that hasn't heard anything from em in a while.
10,000 days is great, don't get me wrong...but I wouldn't recommend it to someone hearing Tool for the first time.

Tool is pretty badass, only thing close to Metal I've really liked. Its heavy and dark but pretty and intricate as well. Haven't listened to it in forever I remember being dosed as fucked one time and coming to tears listening to the album haha its really nice when you want to be in a dark place almost like mourning or something.

Goddamn I love Tool. If I had to pick a favorite band it would be them. I've been listening to them since I was 12. Used to have a major crush on James Maynard Keenan. Mmmhmmm.
Hell, who am i kidding. I still do. Sing to me baby.
Anywho. I don't know. Tool makes me feel anchored to something in a way nothing else does. Strange.

Stinkfist is so unbelievably Dionysian to me, listening to it has become a form of worship.

I love Tool but it's just too god damn heavy on the subject matter sometimes. I mean sexual abuse and stuff. Great band though, I really love their music. Just a little dark to be listening to all the time.

Yeah but that's really just Prison Sex I reckon. I'm not really into that album (Undertow), after that they don't really touch on anything like that again, in any obvious way anyway.

Huge tool fan here!
It's borderline magic for me. Their drummer is insane.
Jambi is one of most favourite tracks but it's hard to pick just one to be honest
For my tastes. I feel each album kept getting better than the last. I love the direction their music has went. 10,000 days was beyond incredible.
Saw them live once and I've never experienced a zone like that before. If was surreal to put it lightly. Trippy as fuck
Can't wait for the new album. Will be next year

I finally got to see the live last year and it was fucking amazing!!! I don't think they will ever come back here. South Australia doesn't get the big names very often.

Tool is the shit! One of my favourite bands for sure. Aenima, Lateralus and 10 000 days are all so good in their own ways.
Parabola is probably my favourite song by them though. Never gets old

i am a tool fan aswell, but..
i cant really listen to them when i am super high, they worked with too many dark forces and they tend to get in the way of a good trip.
i really enjoy listening to them when im sober or drinking n shit when i am less vulnerable to these malevolent energies.
i find a perfect circle and pusifier more bearable while high as fuck tho.

I know Danny Carey said he summoned a demon into his bass drum.

yea i think it was mainly the drummer. i had picked up some menacing vibes one day while listening to tool high as fuck, and i later found out the drummer dude was like a satanist n shit, then everything made sense. the dude does like rituals n shit in the recording studio.
i dont get the same vibes from a perfect circle or pusifer, probably cuz the drummer dude aint a part of that band. i dont think maynard was really into that shit either.

their not demonic, thats a misconception.
they focus on duality.
their sound started in the darkness polarity and slower moves closer to the light (i believe maynard stated this in an interview, or something along those lines.) as they are focused on unity if you listen to the lyrics.
Jambi, schism, etc reference this idea of unification.
"Divided i'll wither away" "shine until the two become one"
alex grey is also focusing on unifying world religions with what connects them, art. and tool work extensively with alex greys art work so they know what hes all about philosophically speaking.
Nassim haramien is working on the unified field theory merging spirituality with physics.
alex grey and nassim haramien recently had a modern knowledge tour here in toronto and i got to see them both which tool posted an advertisement for on their webpage, they are definitely in the "know"
they are perhaps the only light force there is left on this planet.
tool are benevolent saints imo.

real magic is happening there.. its amazing.

Danny Carey is a fucking wizard. I recently started focusing more attention on the drums while listening to Tool. It's mad. Just listen to the drums when Jones goes in for the solo on Rosetta Stoned. Rosetta Stoned as a whole is fucking mad. I can't not listen to tool when I trip. I have a very close relationship with their music, It just works. If you're gonna trip to Tool listen to Lateralus, It's not "dark" or "malevolent", I can see where people get that vibe from Aenima and before. Just listen to them let them do math with the music. It's almost purifying.

there music is a metaphoric outline of the stages in a spiritual path. from darkness to light.
if you cant appreciate the darkness then you need to do some serious soul searching. both forces are important for keeping balance and should be acknowledged and respected. maynard said something like that in a 1993-1994 interview

I'm speaking truth too. From my stance....lots of light in tools work. Elements of dark, sure(just like led Zeppelin). Light and dark....that duality...is the oldest in human history and part of the human experience
For a band to touch people's souls in light AND dark ways is fucking fantastic
Just speaking the truth

not like maynard, lol remember the lallapalooza interview with the girl, he was so socially withdrawn and on defense. but maynard got way more friendly as time went by, perhaps he was just shy

I don't believe that Danny's a Satanist, I think the site posted above might be having a lend??? This is Maynards Bio from the same page. I sounds like it was written by deluded teenager. It doesn't even make sense:
"One reason Maynard was drawn to L.A. in the early 90's was to explore the possibilities of sacred temple architecture and regeneration. Thus it is perhaps easiest to sketch a brief history of Maynard through some of the elements within his living space. The floor has a formation that's round on both sides and hi in the middle that is best measured with the equation DV/D = I (I being incidence); and a pack of gum, mo' happiness, and the apostle. Examining the wall introduces art pieces by Ramiro Rodriquez and themes best grasped through being Jung in Michigan. At the window frame a hairless cat stares intently outside at squawking irish parrots swaying drunkenly. Coast to coast some things never change. In another direction is a calendar of crossed out squares with A Perfect Circle scribed on May 23rd and "NIN tour" written under April 12th."
That is the whole Bio from the site linked above. I call bullshit!

i wanna get a tool fans opinion on something that was driving me nuts, i think i found an easter egg in maynards lyrics.
remember in eulogy when maynard says "ranting and pointing his finger, at everything but his heart." and he was talking about L ron Hubbard.
well it was an interesting coincidence that in the 1992 infamous Scientology centre gig which they were against performing at but decided to anyways, that when the announcer introduces tool, right when he screams "TOOOL!!!" maynard points his finger at the announcer and the audience because they are into scientology..
Check it out, its right at the beginning of this video
its funny he mentions pointing a finger in AENEMA which came out around 1995 in the song eulogy, about L ron Hubbard.
im just wondering if he was aware of the hypocrisy of that and was somehow talking about himself and L ron Hubbard, like he wasnt innocent either.
i dunno, it was an interesting coincidence if anything.

Wish I could go back and hear the albums for the first time. They remind me too much of their respective time periods in my life. Just nostalgia at this point. The new album will undoubtedly rock.
Eulogy isn't about LR Hubbard or Bill Hicks, it's about you.

i definitely could see how its about me
its funny though maynard also says
"but it was so loud, he sure could yell."
Maynard was praised by OGT'ers for having iron screaming lungs.
i could swear the song is deeper than its surface, or it could be my schizophrenic mind reading too much into things again

I think it's a super deep song, but I always felt that Maynard's view was he was talking about Bill Hicks. He also died before that album so that plays into my connection.
This is just my thoughts I've never researched into it.

The pentagram is a beautiful symbol
Nitwits are the only ones who thinks its true meaning is satanic
But I don't think the pentagram was his reason for his assumption

It was reading the Aenima insert 20 years ago that got me interested in occultism. Just because you summon Paimon, king of demons, into your music doesn't mean that you worship or even believe in Satan.

Tool have been a huge part of my life and spiritual development, deeply influenced and obsessed with Adam Jones unique guitar playing style and visual art being a guitarist myself. Also Danny Carey applying sacred geometry, occult knowledge and meta physics into his drumming is pure genius imo.

Guys first off I want to say that you all are awesome, it's cool af that there are still so many people that like them.
I really hope they release their new album soon. Although to be completely honest I'm not expecting it to be better than 10,000 Days, let alone Lateralus. But hey who knows? (btw I'm not talking shit about 10,000 Days I just liked Lateralus much more.) I think I'm going to go against my instincts and get my hopes way up for it, hoping it's their best record yet, and it will make up for all the time we've waited. However, I am also prepared to be let down. No matter how good or bad it is I'll always keep listening to Lateralus.
Hey as for all this talk about them being into Satanic/Dark shit, I personally would listen to it regardless if it's true or not. I just love their music and it's the driving force of my life. So maybe I'm demon powered?
Lol seriously though I think it's possible they just have a thorough knowledge of techniques to make their music pleasurable to the altered mind. Like they probably use those crisscross patterns with each instrument, while also creating specific notes (which are made of specific vibrations, which probably somehow tie in to using the sacred geometry and numbers. Idk man..
Guys I wish I could chill with all you personally. But forums are cool. So I wanted to get a list started of songs that Tool should cover. What do you think of mine?

Close enough I suppose:
I used to love Tool.
The fact that their last album was over 9 years ago + Maynard has lost his voice... I just gave up.
Definitely one of my favorite bands and influenced my life more than any other.
Cheers.

How did Maynard lose his voice? I watched some recent live footage and it didn't seem horrible by any means.
Lol I'm not big into wine or really any alcohol for that matter. I hate the high from alcohol it's so lame compared to bud lol
But yeah I just hope I someday get to see them live. I mean I'm REALLLY tempted to fly down to Arizona to see them live but it would be quite expensive lol

would have been epic to have been at the show where it was recorded!
funnily enough i always used to skip the push it live version and most of the live/cover tracks from salival. didn't realise i was missing soo many gems! those are some of their best tunes!
Tool and APC was my go to music anytime i was tripping. i've got this weird obsession with their music.. it always seemed to have a strong resonance that no other music ever really has before. laying back watching CEVs, listening to tool/APC and just floating away into zenmode. wonderful experiences!
can't wait to hear the new album whenever its finally released.

Maynard's voice:
I saw them at the beginning of the 06 tour and Maynard at least tried, though it was clear that his higher register that he had left in 2002/3 was long gone, let alone his consistent screaming in songs. This is totally understandable, as he is getting older and all vocalists who do this shit lose this register, however...
I saw them in 2009 and it was a joke. Danny, Justin, and Adam were all spot on; Maynard was mailing in a performance of croaking. He wasn't trying and it was painful to watch/hear.
Same in 2012.
That being said, I love their music; I just wish Maynard would take it as seriously as he once did. Just seems like a piggy bank for his new hobbies.
I'm obviously very critical, but compare this:
t=3m2s
That is pretty skin-crawling to me.
To each their own of course.

I saw them last year. He cancelled the sold out show because he'd lost his voice. We didn't find out until we were about to go in, which kinda sucked.
They offered refunds or you could come back to a rescheduled gig the following night. Of course we went the next day, but more than half the crowd was empty seats.
Maby he was feeling guilty about the night before, maby the rasp in his voice added something cool to his sound or maby he was feeling the loyalty of those of us who dropped everything to come back a second night??
But it was the best I've ever heard him sound.

That's so dope dude great story. I hope that one day I will be able to see them live. I have a strip of some really good acid (my friend got some at that Dead tour a few months ago lol) I scored last month that is strictly for when I see them live. I'll have to end up splitting that bitch like 4 ways with whoever I go with cause it's a wee bit strong lol
I was so tempted to buy tickets to the show they're doing with Primus in Arizona and fly down there! It would have cost me almost $1k though I'm sure if they do ever release their new album they'll do a tour to support it but honestly I would prefer to see their old material live. Like I wish I could time travel and see the 2002 tour lol
BUT YOU NEVER KNOW GUYS, maybe the new album will be their crowning achievement. That's what my little TOOL heart hopes for lol. Although I didn't like 10,000 Days as much as Lateralus it's still definitely worth listening to and if their new album is anything like it I'll still be happy.
I suppose I'm just worried that the whole "electronic music" trend that's gotten popular in last several years will find it's way into their sound.
Don't get me wrong; I dig Puscifer and some of the EDM and trippy electronic that's out there. Electronic is cool in the fact that it opens up infinite possibilities for sound in general. I noticed that the song "Intension" had some weird electronic stuff in the last part of the song, which I thought was groovy.
So I'm trying to say if they incorporate some electronic elements, yeah it will be a new sound for them and if anyone can utilize it to make mindblowing material, it will be them lol.
THAT SAID, I will always prefer the heavy rock sound. You guys all know what I mean; that epic intro to Lateralus, where the guitar transitions from clean to distorted, or The Pot, where he says "You must have been high..", that one riff from The Grudge that comes in when he says "Saturn comes back around, show you everything." THAT is the sound that blows me away.

Adam Jones' actually uses a digital synth in his rig for a ton of sounds in lateralus and 10000 days, also I know carey messes around with modular synths and i believe his mandala drums trigger some sort of drum synth. They've incorporated synths in their sound since Aenima, with the stinkfist intro being most notable I understand what you're getting at though, They won't make it like that, they're too dedicated to making organic, raw, and authentic sounds with their instruments

Yeah I think your right. They will no doubt try some new things musically, but they've always been sure of who they are as a band.

That's really cool! I did know they used those kinds of effects and such, but yeah I'm sure they'll stay based around rock. Like I said, I'm sure I would dig it even if it was more electronic as long as they were creative with it like Radiohead.
I'm just waiting to see more tour dates, but I have a feeling there won't be any big tours until the album drops. I REALLY wish I was going to Monster Mash lol

On a sorta related note Puscifer is releasing an album in 10 days and having a tour. IE Maynard is not going to be in the studio making any albums with Tool.

They're about as good at business as they are at music. That's like $50,000 for a Q+A and photos. They'll be thinking, "Suckers."

Don't quote lyrics, man. Anyone know any bands similar to Tool? I've got Melvins, Isis, Grails, Clutch, and Monkey3.

Im all over Rishloo, kind of similar but not at all. Their new album 'Living as ghosts with buildings as teeth' is fucking sweet.
The singer has this like MJK/Freddie Mercury/The parrot from Aladdin, thing going on. It took me a while to get used to them, but they are amazing. A psychedelic sound that rips right through your soul. Just like tool, you just have to listen to them over and over again to get the message.
Listen to it loud....
Check em out here

for a more prog-rock sounding Tool-sounding band, i'd recommend Echolyn. note: they aren't as dark a band, but they have some similarities. but they're also pretty different.
just throwing that out there.
and i will quote lyrics! come down! get off your fucking cross...we need the fuckin' space to nail the next fool martyr!

That's the trouble it's hard to find bands that even come close to comparable to Tool. But those are all good comparisons for modern bands. I like both The Melvins and Isis, haven't heard much Clutch or the others.
I'm digging this one band called Intronaut (kinda cliche band name imo lol) They are like GHOST BC (vocals) crossed with The Melvins with a prog twist. They do a lot of that prog guitar shit with the downtuned guitar off tempo breakdowns. Almost sounds like a 7 string sometimes lol Idk, they are somewhat like Tool cause their drummer is off the chain, like they would not be half as good without him lol

I'll definitely have to check them out! I've heard nothing but good things about this artist, thanks for the recommendation

12 November, 2015 (06:45pm) TOOL TOUR VISIONS
SOMETHING WICKED THIS... YOUR WAY COMES! For those of you who only like NEWS about TOOL, here's something that should be of great interest. The impenetrable veil of my dark scrying mirror FINALLY CLEARED today - enough so, in fact - that I could perceive a large heptagram on a complexly lit stage where four performers were dwarfed by dramatic video projections. Evidently the sonic and visual extravaganza that I was receiving is a rare glimpse of future TOOL U.S.A. TOUR DATES in the month of JANUARY, 2016 e.v. However, with some of the images in the depths of the black glass not being clearly distinct... YET, fans will have to keep checking back (SOON) on the Tool websites and Tool facebook page for an official announcement containing a list of the SHOW DATES, CITIES and VENUES, as well as for info about a tour support act(s). Regarding an opening band(s), what I was able to discern through the ever-shifting veil will in all likeliness be exciting to many Tool enthusiasts. STAY TUNED, FOLKS... as my trusty SCRYING MIRROR CONTINUES TO CLEAR...

This tour better be on a new album.
Ha, Danny's shroom shirt: http://shop.dannycarey.org/mens-psilicon-valley-tee/
The sigils are cool, but on a shirt they're kind of fanboy. I wish he had posters.

Saw them on Halloween...awesome show. Visuals were better than ever.
I hope to see them in January. I can wait for a new album..I'd rather see a tour with songs they haven't played in years.

Awesome vocals, beautiful lyrics, beautiful guitars... and a bit of humor thrown in here and there. Nothing like them.
Puscifer has some amazing songs with some spiritual themes as well. A lot of silliness in there too though, and the coverart... Puscifer is hit and miss.
I don't know what happened to my 10,000 Days t-shirt. Musta got too old and I used it as a cum rag.

this is the most candid, easygoing interview with Maynard i've come across (the Joe Rogan interview is pretty good as well, but doesn't go into his experience growing up as much)
