Have you ever had a taco, OP? That's \ˈtä-(ˌ)kō\ They're usually fried corn/flour tortillas filled with meat, cheese, and simple vegetables. I doubt you've heard of them, but they'll blow your fucking mind!

You know what pisses me off? Food truck tacos. Like, what the shit is this soft corn tortilla? Lightly toasted?! And you put cabbage on it? Get the fuck out of here with that shit.
I've, uhhh...suffered disappointment in life at the hands of a food truck taco.

humus and baba ganoush are my favorites. All Greek foods are extremely easy to make too. Food's been around when Socrates was still in his cave, gawking at shadows.

Nah, I usually really like authentic dishes. For some reason, that combo just threw me for a loop. I'm not a fan of unfried corn tortillas (unless they're in a nice, saucy enchilada), and uncooked cabbage...I just can't. If it's not coleslaw, I better smell some steamy vinegar all up in that cabbage.

honestly, r., I'm just giving you a hard time because taco trucks are where you get the most authentic mexican foods in most western countries. Most restaurants have to Americanize/Canadianize/Britianize(?)/etc. to cater to the lowest common denominator, but taco trucks don't really do that at all. Cabbage is probably a regional thing, because many authentic tacos don't have cabbage.

We just have different approaches, man. I always ate out to eat foods that there's NO way I could make on my own... Then after eating it enough, I make it. I'm thinking about going to culinary school, so I shouldn't be as snoody about Pub acculturation as I've been. I live in WA (a port state with lots of immigration from everywhere), so I was just surprised by the lack of exposure. Forget my negativity, lol
brk, definitely. You should see how the Malay spell all their British foods and words. They have adopted the spelling to match their phonetic structure...some Philippine examples. Misis=mrs., Pulis=Police. etc. etc. It's common yiros is to Gyros as Shiraz is to Syrrah.

Looks like it. We call em kebabs in this part of the world. The food of the piss-head (drunk) on a friday night. I love em. It was the only meat dish I missed when I was vegetarian. In fact, I missed em so much I'd treat myself to one every now and again.

Haha, consider it forgotten. I'm not even going to pretend to have a sophisticated palate. I'll eat and enjoy mostly anything else. I'm good at picking out flavors, but I'm hard pressed to find something I don't enjoy.
Hey, as someone with more experience in authentic cuisine, would you mind describing a traditional taco salad (if there is any such thing)?

Well around here a taco salad can be just a bunch of tacos smashed up in a bowl with the usual ingredients, or out of a resturant, pretty much the same ingredients but in a big taco shell. Those mexican fellows are good at making fifty different plates out of the same 4 ingredients.

Kebabs are completely different in Greek cuisine. They're these:
Those are afghani, but it's the same in both cultures. You guys call gyros kebabs because at one point, someone confused the two and it became normative (like we call the Aboriginals in our country "Indians". You guys are strange
r., I don't really know, but I think a taco salad is a foreign adaptation of a Mexican dish (tacos), so I doubt there's really an authentic one... salads originated in 500BC from the greek (who invented the thumbs up, so any culture that uses that, probably eats salad), but idk if a taco salad is authentic or what. If anything, it's like Amanita says: regional taco ingredients all chopped up (probably leftover from the day prior). I'm not Mexican, but the Mexican vegetable mixes I've been exposed to are like ceviche and pico de gayo.
I hope someone mexican can chime in!

It's yiro in Greek it's just pronounced wrong by everyone outside of greece. And since motherfuckers be getting all phonetic
A gyro [ˈʝiro] or gyros [ˈʝiros]
All these foods are shit compared to shawarma although it's more radicalized

Yup, my experience is definitely with the big tortilla bowl salad. My stepmom recently made a taco salad that was delicious, but she insisted it was closer to their 'authentic' taco salad. (She grew up in southern California and is absolutely convinced she knows everything about authentic Mexican cuisine.) I was pretty sure that the salad wasn't a particular Mexican dish, but I'll just keep it to myself.
I have never met a kebab from any culture that I disliked. Haven't had Afghani kebabs, tho; they look amazing. Heard good things about shawarma, too.

Oh, dude, it very well could be!
Salads originated in greece, 500 BC, but those guys conquered and imparted a lot across the world. Any culture that uses the thumbs up (near all), probably eats some sort of salad. I've just only seen salads in Americanized Mexican restaurants.
I've met a lot of Mexicans and eaten a lot of their food, but anyone from Cali has probably met more and eaten more than I!
My give up. Back to OTD for me.

Covered with tsatziki and a shit ton tomato, bbq, mayo, sweet chilli, mustard and cheese. It's diabetes in a styrofoam container. but its so fukn good.

Food truck tacos often times have the best tacos, you just have to find the right food truck. Lime on tacos is fuckin diggity dank, try that shit out dude.
I don't mind the corn tortillas, sometimes they taste a bit funky though if they have been made with yellow corn, white corn is where its at. I love flour tortillas though, they're the tits.
Anyway, gyros are good too.
OP, you can buy that sauce at the grocery so you can lather it on anything you want anytime, and I do mean anything.

We tend to slaver a chili sauce over ours. My local 'chippy' serves a kebab with a sauce so fukin hot it hurts. I have to ask for the less 'chilified' mint sauce. If I'm going to pay best part of £5.00 for some food, I want to be able to taste the cunt.

Gyros are fucking delicious, took a friend to a place in the mall the other day after a little blunt cruise, he was skeptical.
Two bites in he goes "dude why haven't we been eating lambs this whole time?"

It was funny as fuck the other day at a restaurant I was eating at. These two kids came in to order gyros. They kept asking for them with the complete wrong pronunciation and the lady kept repeating it with the correct pronunciation but they just didn't catch on until she finally told them "it's pronounced this way". It was kinda like a comedy sketch but IRL.

Gyros can be good. So many places use sour cream instead of yogurt for the tzatziki because it's way cheaper. Most places don't hang their yogurt either. There's not a lot of Greek places in my neck of the woods. The best place in town doesn't have much variety on the menu, especially veg options. There's just not a good market for it here I guess. Falafel though I can eat about a million of those. Falafel wraps are even a step above gyros real talk. Hummos, falafel, lettuce, tomato, onion, tahina, and for me taztaziki and olives. mmmmmmm way more flavor than gyro.

Giftofdeprivation said: honestly, r., I'm just giving you a hard time because taco trucks are where you get the most authentic mexican foods in most western countries. Most restaurants have to Americanize/Canadianize/Britianize(?)/etc. to cater to the lowest common denominator, but taco trucks don't really do that at all. Cabbage is probably a regional thing, because many authentic tacos don't have cabbage.
No... dude cabbage is common as fuck on tacos, even in MX. lol Food trucks, like all food establishments, cater to the lowest common paying customer. Peoples' food tastes don't change depending on whether they walked into a restaurant or walked up to a food truck on the side of the road, and food vendors are there to make money. All food establishments start off with an assessment of the market in which you intend to open, and what will sell in your area. A new take on tacos from a food truck doesn't make them more "authentic." Maybe you just have really shitty Mexican restaurants in the PNW but I grew up in south TX where the best MX food is at restaurants which are so plentiful it's sickening, so that could be why I feel this way. And what is authentic anyway, some shit from the ancient Aztecs or what? Mexicans bring their food with them and it's adapted to what's available in this country, that is as authentic as it gets.

Well, think about it: the larger the business, the more it must bend to the masses. Taco trucks get to make their own rules. In WA, there are Mexicans, but they're in scarce pockets, like everyone else. The best restaurants, regardless of price/quality are in the low income areas, where many Mexicans live (just being honest). In TX, so close to the border, the lowest common denominator is 50% Mexican. so you guys get good food on all levels. We oppress any non-Americanized Mexicans here, lol.
We have some good quality authentic stuff, but to every one, there's 20 Americanized ones. Taco trucks are usually always authentic 20 out of 20. We lucked out with Greek. There are only 5 authentic places in all of the PNW and they're all high quality, expensive places for some reason. And as far as I can tell, the cheap places aren't too Americanized.
that's interesting about cabbage. Like I said, I've had authentic tacos without, too though. Are those just Americanized adaptations Then??? I figured it was regional (or just a cheap filler, so socio-economic)

There's different kinds of "authentic" Mexican too. There's broke ass Mexican fast food- like taco trucks and taquerias etc, and there's also authentic grandma Mexican food which is on a whole different level.

Most taco fillings are mushy so you need texture balancing toppings. Sometimes it's corn, or onion, or radish, or cabbage, or _____. So how authentic are your trucks compared to... what? Like what's an example of Americanized MX you're talking about and what's an example of authentic from a food truck? I'm so tired of Mexican food in my life that all I eat anymore Mexican food wise is like potato egg and cheese tacos or avocado tacos. MAYBE chilaquiles from time to time. MX food is usually pretty heavy so I avoid mostly.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and the larger the company the more they have to cater to the masses? Nuh uh homie other way around. The smaller they are, the more they have to cater to the masses. At least, that's what all my restaurant and food truck owner friends have said. I've been in the market to open my own establishment and I've been researching and talking to chefs and truck owners from all over. I've cooked for a few and everything. It's interesting shit. They ALL advise, universally, to cater to your market and not dictate your market. These are long-running businesses not some popups that will be selling their business in 6 months.

I'm near NYC. Almost all the diners here are run by Greeks. The Gyros are made with this wonderful mystery meat that is cooked on a vertical spit and hand carved in thin slices. They are served on pita bread with the sauce lettuce and tomatoes.
The taco trucks and Mexican restaurants are definitely different. The taco trucks cater to all the Hispanic workers and the restaurants cater to Americans. You do not see many Americans at the taco trucks and you do not see many Hispanics, except for the workers, in the Mexican restaurants.
Felafels are also great. When I was in college there was this tiny take out restaurant called Faddoul's Felafels. It was owned by this Lebanese family that sent wave upon wave of of wrestlers to go to UB. UB had a pretty good wrestling team and the Faddouls were basically the Lebanese Olympic team.

It is a forcemeat of beef and lamb in varying percentages depending on the recipe, with a few spices like oregano and garlic. Lamb's expensive so it's usually less than 40% lamb in most places. Sometimes it's like 10% or less lamb. When I've made them it tasted best to me when it was around 50%-60% lamb.

I'm in the US and I've never had a gyro served in a tortilla wrap. If they tried that I would probably walk out and order food from a different place. It's always pita bread and it's best when they throw it on the grill to toast it a little. I used to live in the Detroit area and we had awesome gyros there. There were 4 great places within 2 blocks of my house.
Now in Florida it is pretty hard to find a decent gyro. For a while I couldn't get a gyro in my town at all. Now I really only know of 1 great place and one acceptable place that serves them. I looked into buying my own gyro machine and the cheapest I could find one was for over like $250 so I found plans to build one. For about $40 I could probably build one, once I get the time.

There are plenty of sit down nice Mexican restaurants here in So Cal that cater to a mostly Mexican clientele, but there is a much larger hispanic middle class here compared to most places in the US.

Even when they use pita here in the US, I haven't had 1 that rivals a Greece-made gyro. Those are just so damn good.
and please nobody talk shit about tacos. Tacos are better than pizza, IMHO

You are aware that neither of the foods (or at least the names you call them by) are Greek, are you? Humus and baba ganoush originate on the other side of the Mediterranean.
Also, as I'm in full on anal mode anyway: I often read about Americans calling a Flatbread filled with meat "a gyros". As I understand it (and as it's offered here in restaurants) gyros is the meat (I think it's officially lamb) roasted in the form of a large tube on a skewer like shoarma and then shaved off into small strips. The meat itself is the gyros. If you order gyros here in a restaurant, you just get the meat with no bread.

Gyros just means rotating. It technically refers to the meat, but in essence doner, gyros and shawarma are the same thing prepared in slightly different ways. I personally think the Lebonese do it best. As far as the who invented humus shit goes, that has been politicised to a ridiculous degree but since chick peas were first domesticated in Turkey it stands to reason that the first person who decided to mush them up was in that region and not somewhere else.

Most street food vendors in NYC use ranch dressing instead of cucumber sauce. It pisses me off cause they always say it's tzatziki sauce when I know damn well it isn't as soon as I see them putting it on. They are usually really good none the less. Gyros are one of my favorite foods.

I'm aware that one culture can learn a recipe from another and adapt it into their own. The Greeks are quite proud of their breads/dips of this nature.
By your inferior logic, the hamburger is purely a British dish because of the origins of sandwiches...

I think hamburgers originated in Hamburg, Germany? That's what I remember hearing. And sandwiches weren't definitely invented by the Brits. The Japs have a say in that as well.

If you have ever been to Greece, you may have noticed that the only real 'dips' they eat a lot are tzatziki, (pure) tahini and sometimes an eggplant dip that is made with yogurt and hence isn't actual baba ganoush.
No need for the butthurt, I was just pointing out that the delicious things you mentioned are associated with the Levant rather than Greece. Like any Mediterranean people, the Greeks do eat a lot of meze and obviously, many of the ingredients occur in all Mediterranean cuisines. Arguing that my logic is twisted doesn't make any sense.
In addition, the hamburger finds its origin in the US. It has nothing to do with the UK and it doesn't historically occur in the British cuisine.

Hamburgers originated in Germany, but sandwiches originated in Britain, so therefore hamburgers originated in Britian, right? Wrong. I was saying that you were splitting hairs... By drawing attention to the "nameless eggplant dip" from Greece that isn't baba, you're only affirming my argument.
butthurt? Dude, stop trying to troll in the Pub. Your logic can be twisted and it doesn't have to be personal. You aren't even good at it in OTD, so cool off, or try your hand there again, MMmk?

Haha, you have a similar name to a complete shitbird that attempts to troll in there.
Way to drop the subject and go for a personal attack though. Nevertheless, baba and humus are greek, just as the hamburger is American. They/we took it and made it our own. Good talk, dude
