I found that in the backyard of this new house. You can see that they are big thorns, compared to my thumb.
Any idea of what this is?

Tree of Thorns (tree of thorns)- Hindu - This tree grows in Hell and is associated with torture. Yama is the Hindu god of hell lives near by such a tree. The thorns on this tree capture the dead. (See Salmali, Tree of Hell, Tree of Yama and Calmali)

I learned in school that all plants with thorns are members of the rose family. Can I get confirmation on this information?

not likley considering that roses aren't acutally thorny. i forget exactly what they are, but thorns is a misnomer. reading my botony book says that spines and thorns are often used interchangebly. however a thorn is a modified stem found at the axial of a stem and a branch...so, roses don't have thorns, they have spines. and as for spines they're many acacia's that have them.

Is that cannabis in the foreground of the top picture?
If not, it certainly looks like it (at least from my POV)

i was to ask if the tree has a 'cannabis like' leaf... it's a cottontree! not actually cotton but it produces some cottony fibers within their seedpods...
signo: not every plant with a spine will be relative to roses!

it would be fun to tie someone up that plant! did you know there's a certain type of agave (if i'm not mistaken) in mexico that the old bad guys used to tie up their enemies (or whoever they wanted to kill) there because it's spiny blades grow SO quick from one day to another (during the growth phase of course) that it would slowly burrow into the victims flesh... or at least my dad said so to scare me when i was little.

It would not be fun tying someone up to that tree.
Look at some of those spikes, they have the diameter of a US Half Dollar.

Yeah someone told me that an old vietnamese torture method was to tie someone down to a patch of short bamboo shafts and the shafts would grow so quickley that it would burrow through the individuals flesh in much the same was as felix describes the agave torture...sounds horrible

ultraviolence is cool, why do you think there's people going to the jail all the time? they aren't insane, killing must be good.
ok, for real now: some yopo trees have spines just like that at their bases. i think they're actually not spines but aculeums. right neuro?
