if it's starting to grow and grows continually into the summer it'll be a respectable small plant before fall again.

it's looking good AJ, I hope it keeps up the rate it's growing at. Is it still under the same conditions it was during the falls? By that I mean do you still have it on your windowsill?

Yes, still on the windowsill, I might put it outside sometime in the near future.
Does anyone know if these plants transplant well? I think I might need a bigger pot soon.

Hehe, yes I guard it with my life, heh. Thanks for the kind comments.

I posted the first pics like 4 months ago, so yes it's grown a good ammount, but very slowly.

I was wondering if there's been any growth on this plant, and if AJ is around I would really like to know what soil mixture he used, I'm thinking of trying my hand at rue and I've got some seeds that just germinated using the ole wet paper towel method.

There's probably been a lot.

The soil mixture that probably is best for them is a relatively sandy soil as it is native to the deserts of southern asia. But i've seen them grow on normal potting soil, but i personally use a sandy mix for my plants.

The paper towel method for rue seems too hard, as the seeds are small and the coleoptiles are very skinny and delicate. You might damage them trying to transfer them to pots but i'm sure it can be done, maybe use tweezers. Best way though is to just sprinkle some in a flat cover lightly or not even (it doesn't seem to matter o much), mist them till they're good and moist and let them germinate.

do you find rue to be a particularly hard plant to grow? i've got a few ounces of seeds and think i might give it a go. how long does a plant take to produce seed? anyone know?

well, whether or not the paper towel method is effective or not will be found out soon. About 6 germinated seeds were tranfered from the paper towel to a mixture of about 25% perlite 75% scotts cactus soil (not my first choice but it'll do for now). The seeds germinated very fast (in less than 24 hours) and the germination rate was higher than expected (about 35%). I've got the pot in a south facing window and we'll see how it goes. I know that most people haven't had any luck with inside cultivation of rue, but it's far too wet here to grow a desert plant outside, it hasn't stopped raining in the last week for more than 6 hours. I think we've gotten 18 inches of rain this month maybe more. Plus AJ's rue was grown indoors and unless it's died since his last post on the subject (which is possible) it seemed to work out fine for him. Maybe I'll get lucky. Anyway, if I can get my web cam working and some growth occurs I'll keep you guys posted. Wish me luck.

>>do you find rue to be a particularly hard plant to grow?

It was frustrating, but if you look in the EG FAQ and find "Secret to Syrian Rue From Seed" in the useful links section you'll see when i finally made the break through. That thread coupled with AJ's thread here seems to indicate that it just likes lots of direct sunlight, so it can't be grown as a normal houseplant unless it's sitting right in a south facing window that gets blasted with sun.

>>'ve got a few ounces of seeds and think i might give it a go. how long does a plant take to produce seed?

Don't know, never made it that far, the last specimen i had died when winter came cause i had an inaccessible south facing window. It's probably documented somewhere. Maybe Growing The Hallucinogens mentions it.

On the paper towel method, my only point really was that i don't think that was necessary and more work effort than what's really needed to germinate it.

Growing indoors seems just that if you can provide a good source of light then it'll probably be fine (e.g. don't use fluoros)

Yeah I understood your point about the paper towel, I just hate sowing directly for some reason, and when you made that post they were already germinated. I am worried that I won't be able to get them enough light because it's always so cloudy here. But it'll be worth a try. I've probably got like a pount of the seeds and enough Harmala HCL to last me a life time already, so what the hell. We'll see how it goes. Out of curiousity do you think that numerous compact flouros would be capable of putting off enough light to maintain a small plant? HPS is just out of the question for my budget right now.
