Syrian Rue seedling
    #2221497 - 01/05/04 10:08 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

I planted some various seeds in different pots not too long ago, and most didn't sprout, but something popped up in one of the pots, but I have forgotten which seeds I put it which pot...so I was wondering if anyone could verify whether or not this is a Syrian Rue seedling?
The reason I think it's syrian rue, is because the only other types of seeds I had planted were Hawaiian Baby Woodrose and Morning Glory, and this seedling looks nothing like any pictures I've seen of either MG or HBWR.
So if any of you know what a Syrian Rue seedling looks like, maybe you could help me out?

Yeah I agree with neuro and I think you should definately keep us posted on the growth of the plant. I've heard a lot of people report attempts to grow rue with no luck so.....good luck.

Yeap, it's still Syrian Rue.

Where are you growing these: indoors, outdoors, inside in a little greenhouse thing, with lights etc...?

Just on my windowsill, it's been quite warm out lately so it seems to be getting a good ammount of sun. I can see noticeable growth since the first picture I posted.

Be wary, many indoor cultivation attemps of syrian rue have failed, people report it growing to be about that big and stalling then dying.

Hmm...I think it's still too cold at night, but would it be better outdoors? I have a covered patio that I could move it to...

It might be too cold outside, but why not leave it inside near it's window (i assume south facing window) and see if it progresses.

How cold is it outside now at night?

Yes, South facing window. It still gets around freezing at night. I have all my cacti and some bonsai trees under a covered part of my patio, and they're all doing fine, but I think that if I were to move something that's used to the warm indoors out there, it could totally shock it to death.
I guess I will wait a while and see if this one pulls through, if it does, I will move it outdoors when it warms up.

I'm pretty sure the seed takes about a year for it to germinate.
this could be the reason people have trouble with it.

the seeds does not take a year to germinate. i dont think any seeds does that, and ive been growing p. harmala for some time now.

Cultivation and Propagation: Syrian rue may be grown outdoors in the South and West. It does well in dry sandy soils, but will benefit from somewhat richer soils. Will stand considerable drought. Viable seeds are rare but are the best means of propagation. These should be sown in flats of half sand, half soil, in April and May. Water sparingly, letting the surface dry. The seedlings are very susceptible to overwatering. They should be grown as pot plants the first year, and brought indoors in the winter. In the following spring they may be planted outdoors. In cold-winter areas the roots should be lifted and stored in damp sawdust in a cool place until early spring. Be sure to plant out before new growth starts.

Ok sorry, I should get my facts right. I think I might've confused them with another seed. my mind is confused :frown:

Well here it is as of yesterday. It hasn't grown much since January, but over the past few weeks I've noticed an increase in growth. I assume this is because the weather has been quite warm and sunny recently.
So....should it be larger? or does Syrian rue grow very slowly? or maybe the cooler winter weather slowed its growth...but it wasn't even that cold, and the plant was indoors on a windowsill...maybe the lack of sun has something to do with it...
