I hope that this image i made is straight forward enough.

* - mulch was spread this summer, unsure of type of wood. ** - I did not notice if the stem was solid or not. The mushroom was hefty so I assume it is solid.

Perhaps Rhodocollybia distorta or a similar collybioid species.
Really good ID request, wish they were all like that.

two TI saying different types!? I'm torn!
Thank you for the ID layout compliment. I took pics and whipped them up in illustrator. Perhaps next time i'll use indesign, should be faster!

We aren't really saying different things though, Gymnopus is a collybioid fungi.
My ID is correct, I live in Oregon and find these things all of the time in wood chip beds.

After i re-read and looked it up i realized i made a fool of myself.
is there a strategy to being good at identification? i feel like of all the main parts of a mushroom, there are an infinite combination of mushrooms to exist.. are there absolute rules? simple things to absolutely rule out species? i.e. tubes = bolete - bolete = won't kill you... or some kind of easily understood system to become a skilled IDer?

I used Adobe Illustrator, but as i said in my previous message, i'll probably use InDesign for quicker image/text replacement. I would be more than willing to share my illustrator file with you (and InDesign, once i make it - no idea when i will, though).

Lol, Having no social life and being an introverted-nerd helps. Study, stay around the site, look at others posts and the ID's given to them.

There is a finite about of mushrooms species in existence, work on learning the basic genera first. These will help- http://www.alpental.com/psms/PNWMushrooms/PictorialKey/index.htm http://www.mycokey.com/newMycoKeySite/MycoKeyIdentQuick.html http://mushroaming.com/Pacific_Northwest

Absolutely!

Just study, look at lots of pictures and get a general feel for it. Trying to ID others mushrooms will save you the trouble of finding them yourself. You seem to have the right attitude for this kind of thing.
