Question on Wbs sticky
    #22211425 - 09/09/15 09:53 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Im currently drying my Wbs from a 24 hour soak. I threw it on the stove to simmer for like 2 minutes. Is it normal for it to be so damn sticky. It does have corn but I didn't boil so idk if it's from that or not

You should simmer for at least 10 minutes or so, until the grains get plump. That's how you know they are fully hydrated. They should look like this.

Then air dry for like 30 minutes until the outside of the grain is dry, then load up your jars!!

The stickiness is due to the starches being released from burst grains.

I would never simmer wbs. After they are hydrated I dump them on a screen and spray them with a shower head/hose to rinse them. 24 hours is way enough to hydrate them, you're taking unnessecary steps.

ok here is how i prep wbs

Wash the seeds till the water is clear,
put it in a pot fill it with water till covered properly, bring it to the boil.
once boiling turn off the gas, and put the lid on the pot
let it sit for 1 hr
after one hour strain the seeds and let it drip all the water shaking helps

once this done fill the jars to 3/4 and PC for 90 minutes

after 90 minutes and when the pressure goes down, get the jars out with a towel or something and shake them like u mean it, to mix up the dry and moist areas

let it cool before inoculation i shake it one more time,

this is perfect all the time

I use wbs only for grain. If there is cracked corn it will get sticky like this happened to me a couple weeks ago. Also a 24 hour soak seems a bit excessive, like it would cook the grains to mush. I just put my wbs in a 5 gal bucket dump boiling hot water into the bucket put a towel over it, and let it sit for 2 hours to an hour. I then strain it rinse it off and load up my jars and pc. 100 percent success everytime. If you salvage those grains the moisture will inhibit the mycelium growth and slow shit way down

I can see how newbies can get frustrated
so many ways to do a simple tek like wbs

I rinse as many times as it takes
to get rid of floaters and debris
When the water runs clear
I stir up the bottom
and more junk floats to the surface

I then soak for 24 hours
in room temp water
to germinate endospores
and hydrate the wbs

Then spread out wbs on a blanket to dry
using a fan to speed things up
and then PC when most of the
exterior moisture has evaporated.

Pick up a handful of wbs
pour it out
and only a few seeds should stick
to your hand.
