Have a nice day! (winter rerun)
    #2221126 - 01/05/04 07:04 PM (13 years, 15 days ago)

What is this "social nicety" about? A command, a wish or what?

Well what if I want to have a miserable day? What if I want to grump about snarling at small children and old ladies? What if I want to have my own private pity-party? AM I NOT ALLOWED?

Does wishing someone a nice day rain gifts down on them, bring them luck, get them a new job or even a new attitude?

Swami: *Gak!*

Nosey bystander: "God bless you!" *glows with pride for being the first respondent*

Swami: It was a cough, not a sneeze.

Nosey bystander: Oh, I'm sorry.

Swami: You are sorry for blessing me and NOW YOU WANT TO TAKE IT BACK?

Well, what if I want to have a wonderful day? What if I want to smile at small children and old ladies? What if I want to dance in the streets and have a celebration and invite all my friends? AM I NOT ALLOWED?

Seriously?

I suppose everyone is entitled to so whatever they want as long as it doesn't harm someone else. And there should be a strict definition for what 'harm' is.

Is a person's well wishing harming you?

I seriously doubt it.

I reserve statements such as the ones you mention to people close to me. I don't randomly 'bless' anyone. How do I know they aren't an axe murderer? I really don't want an axe murderer to have a nice day.

I'm small that way.

Yes, Swami, I give you permission to have whatever kind of day you want to have, within the bounds of reason and good etiquette. What's that, you want to have a day outside the bounds of reason and etiquette? Nope, sorry, not allowed. 'Cause I said so, kid.

geez swami, you're acting as if the definition of the word "nice" has some kind of objective meaning which is an eternal postulate

Common courtesy....I like it when someone extends that courtesy in return or otherwise. It shows respect, and I value respect highly in others--respect for themselves, and respect for others. They may not genuinely mean it, but it's still a nice gesture...it shows that at least they're trying, and cares about what other people think and so on.

Edit: OH, and Have a nice fuckin day!

Is a person's well wishing harming you?

No, but I seriously doubt the checkout clerk gives a damn about my day just because I shopped at Pik & Flik. It is the robotic insincerity which I find tiresome.

As I stated in my first post, "I wish everyone now and for all future generations a nice life." Now I don't ever have to say that stupid and meaningless "nicety" ever again. Yup - even axe murderers else this "blessing" would take thousands of pages so I am making it all inclusive.

Thank you. (Oops - there is another trite social nicety!)

How about when someone wishes you a "good morning" checks their watch and notices that it is now 12:03 PM and then apologizes for wishing you a "good morning" and takes it back? It is my "good morning" now, you jerk-off, and NO you can't have it back!

Hey - I am starting to feel better...

On this thread, I'll agree with you, Skorpivo.

I had to force myself to learn to use social amenities. I felt like they were a waste of time. I didn't have patience for them. Then someone explained to me that they are a form of decorum in which we have to engage, sort of like showing your hands to show I have no weapons. To show you care about people.

So, I make myself slow down, and say "how are you?", and schitt like that, before I get down to business.

I work a job where I end up in the position of saying "have a nice ___" to a lot of people.  I have quit doing this for days at a time in the past, sort of as a sociological experiment.  I noticed that the vast majority of people were negatively effected by this, or at least thats what I got from their mannerisms/ facial expressions.

I guess "have a nice day" is pretty meaningless, but it effects most people positively, even if only a little, so I do it anyway.

"have a nice day" has even effected you positively, SWAMI- its given you this wonderful issue to turn over in your mind, which you gave back to the world in the form of this asskickin thread.  Have a nice day, indeed.
