Contamination doesn't appear from the shake unless the shake compromises your filter somehow. The shake helps show what's really growing on your grain.

That all said it's not impossible to have clean spores. It's just very difficult and unlikely.
Does this have to do with how spores are collected? If so, are certain vendors known to have cleaner spores than others?

It can, and I wouldn't know about vendors. Microscopy use only and so forth.

I kneaded a bag of Rye that was about 70% colonized and ended up with drops of caramel looking liquid and "wet" grain. 1 of 3 possibilities i've narrowed down to. 1. My kneading caused a dried out kernel of rgs to puncture a small hole and allowed contams in 2. I bought the bag from an online source for mycology while i was still perfecting my grain prep technique and it was contaminated from get go 3. My multispore syringe wasn't nearly as sterile as i had hoped. Oh well, you live and you learn. I can't wait to get agar down to a science. I absolutely love the idea of all the strain isolating possibilities!!! Not to mention, guaranteed contam free mycelium to work with. And I'll post some pics of suspected cobweb soon. And i am just not going to mess with the jars or bags anymore until i'm ready to use them.

And the Jar I shook and suspected cobweb turned out to be one i noc'd up with LC that was made from syringe. Im guessing my LC is dirty and missed that in my notes. I've got too many things going on to remember what was what. So i'm not implying that the shake caused my contamination any longer... it had to of been the LC or my grain prep.

Many vendors sell edible species.
So, are spores sterile before the veil breaks? I think that's my real question.

Just a friendly word of advice. The better you keep track of things (via labeling and a log book) the faster you will learn. Colored tape or Avery labels can help make it easier to keep track of what you do. I've reached totally WRONG conclusions because I didn't record well. You will learn much more with 3 well documented projects than 10 poorly recorded ones.
I don't think non-optimal moisture content in grain can cause contamination. The only thing that causes contamination is contaminants.

They could be. There's no guarantee that the veil is a perfect filter. It surely helps, but I wouldn't assume anything to guarantee success 100% of the time.
