Marasmius oreades cultivation attempt #1 * 1
    #22210216 - 09/08/15 11:44 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I received a M. oreades print today. I decided to use this species as one of my subjects while trying to find a companion fungi to use with medical marijuana cultivation. My gf and her family are starting their medical mj farm in MI next spring, so I'll be experimenting with  several species to find which has the best results. I was offered the print in a trade, so I read up on the species. I found it incredibly interesting that the grass inside the fairy rings regularly grows greener and faster than outside the ring. While visiting her aunt in Chicago over the weekend, I noticed a circle of grass much lusher than the grass outside of the circle. No mushrooms, but it was obviously a perfect example of this phenomenon. The same species of grass, mowed all at the same time, yet the blades inside the circle were twice as wide and long as the grass outside the circle. This is apparently due to fungal species creating gibberlinic acid. GA3 has been used to feminize mj seeds and stimulate growth, but people use a chemical concentrated version. If too much is used it with harm the plants. Since this hormone has already been tested with mj and has shown promising results, I believe the natural fungal source of the acids will be a perfect balance for the plants.

If anyone has experience (recent or in the past) with this species, please comment below. I am especially interested to see if anyone has planted mj inside a fairy ring to see if that helped the plants. Here is the best past thread here on shroomery about M. oreades cultivation. There is very little on cultivation of this species. At least that thread has good pics of the mycelium. I imagine the substrate and fruiting needs would be similar to Agaricus species. Will be inoculating agar from wild print Thursday. My agar nutrient is diluted and filtered grain soak water (rye grass seed/milo/coffee), and will be going to the same grains after that. My fruiting substrate will be a mix of potting soil, aged donkey manure, and dried yard clippings.

Thanks. If I can get clean culture I'll be offering it as a fundraiser for the OMC and myco-club.

I've been looking for a culture of this one for a while. I've heard it is delicious.

Tried once, very hard to get anything from a wild print or a clone, all af my petries died before I can managed a clean culture, I gave up too early because of other projects...

Best Wishes!

Just so you're aware, although the grass just inside and outside the fairy ring grows very well; the ring itself (where the fruits appear) usually causes the grass to brown off almost completely in some cases. This mushroom is really common where I live and you can quite often spot the dead circle of grass from quite far off so not sure what effect that'll have on your plants.

I have noticed that about the rings... In reading about gibberlinic acids (specifically synthetic GA3), results showed that too much GA3 had a reverse effect on the growth and killed pot plants. Maybe for some reason the fungi produce higher levels of GA3 at the colonizing edge were new growth occurs more rapidly, killing the grass to feed the new growth.

I did have a go at cultivating this species. It appeared to need live grass to fruit which is not easy to emulate.
