If you wanna go that route, you can try. The chance you will fail will be about 98% though. It's very difficult to do for the general person. You don't have all the calibration tools, and everything in a drive is built to an exact spec. The donor drive to read the discs also has to be the exact same model of the bad drive. If it's only a 1 disc drive, you stand a bit better of a chance of just switching out the discs. If not, you're pretty much going to destroy the disc getting it in.

If you have a SAB, you can increase your chances of success slightly. Wear gloves. Treat it like it were a bomb. Takes very specific notes of what disc (if working with more than one) goes where and which way they face.

If you do this though and fuck up, I kinda doubt anyone is going to be able to go back and recover the files after the fact.

If it caused the same issues with the other boards than that drive is fucking everything up.

IE Your BIOS is fine so just hammer the drive.

My suggestion would be recover the data if possible then wipe the drive.

if you don't have a windows cd for some reason, you can download a windows repair disc instead that just has the repair files on it

the two other computers I've tried the HDD in are my roommates. He's not too tech savvy, I don't think, but he said he built the desktop himself and got the lappy off CL and they seem like some remarkable machines compared to what I'm used to.

I had thought strongly that his desktop power supply wasn't cutting it, but when I plugged it into his lappy and the same issues happened, I started thinking it might be the power on the HDD is corrupted.

if that's SATA, I think you can just plug that into an external SATA slot if one of your guys computers has one of those, then you can plug it in AFTER boot.

You said it only stops bootup when the DATA cable is plugged it.  SO the reason your friends computers aren't booting is because they think that hard drive is the PRIMARY hard drive and its trying to boot to it.  there are dos programs that you can set that hard drive to non primary I forgot what its called

but its not the power doing it or having just the power plugged in would cause it

if your willing to risk frying motherboards and computers you could wait to plug the SATA cable in on your friends computers after bootup, do it on the hard drive side to slightly reduce damage to their motherboards, with their permission of course

F10 did some Edit boot options screen that I couldn't really do anything with. That was weird. I think different brands of motherboards/BIOSes have different buttons that do different things on startup. eg, on the desktop, F12 takes me to boot list, where as it's F8 on both the lappys.

mine does that too, its the bios boot options, which are different than the OS boot options.  The OS stuff is on the hard drive which is having problems (or a CD like I keep mentioning which I still don't know if you have tried effectively yet)

have your friends burn you a windows repair disc, they don't even have to download anything, its already on their computers if its the same version of windows, others might work too who knows

So, I already risked their motherboards doing that (oops, the hot swapping thing I mentioned). In windows and the recovery, it's doesn't show up.

I don't think SATA has primary and slave drives. I think it's just determined by the BIOS which one boots first. Like I said, I assigned either the Windows 8.1 DVD I had, or the good HDD first and even went so far as to disable the faulty one from boot, yet somehow it still affects boot.

This just bites the big-one. I'll ask around for an external docking thingy for the HDD among my friends, but I think I'm just going to put the thing to rest. I'm so lost, it's gotta just be faulty hardware.

Unless something else comes to mind??? Either way, THANK YOU ALL SOOOOOO MUCH for all your help and attention on this issue. This has been killing me the last couple days, so I really appreciate talking it out, lol!

Yeah all the different models and stuff will have different functions for the F-buttons. Some will over lap of course, because there's only so many F-buttons on a standard keyboard, but it's not universal. Every single time I have to use those, I have restart the computer a dozen times to find what I'm looking for.

no I wasn't talking about primary/slave, I was talking about partition being primary/non.

so your saying you had the hard drive plugged into the power and the SATA cable unplugged. you booted all the way into windows, logged in, then plugged the SATA cable in, and nothing happened?????????

and when you assaigned the windows dvd drive, it acted like it was booting to windows and froze???

well like I said find the brand of harddrive that is and most manufactors have a program on the website to check to see if its still good, and it will also check its warrenty (nifty)  and you might get a free hard drive if its still covered.

also, there are dos programs for copying hard drives, you already said you could see the files in dos, so you should be able to transfer them to yoru other hard drive via dos.

there are dos commands to do it but can be tricky and risky if you do it wrong.

otherwise do some googling for free software to do it, cnet I believe has software maybe I dunno, Norton ghost or something, I dunno bunch of shit out there

Oh, I guess I was confused by what you had meant. My knowledge here is pretty only as deep as these projects have taken me

There are no partitions. It's one drive (not partitioned) and another drive (not partitioned). The only thing I know how to change is the boot sequence (like I said, disabling the faulty one altogether).

But no, with the power plugged into the faulty drive, regardless if the data cable is in or not, it won't boot. The disk leads it to the blue logo, then froze (or moves into a black screen) and the other HDD with windows on it leads to the "starting windows" screen, where there are endless animations.

I think this is my next step. That and calling geek squad and stuff to price HDD recovery.

Dude, I would be all over that! I know how from android dev ish. I just don't know how to boot into DOS/CMOS. Everyone says F8, but that doesn't work

yah its either the safemode menu, a cd, a flash drive.  I really don't understand why yoru hard drive is stopping the cd from loading that part really gets me.  it must be freezing it when it checks whats all connected to the computer, but you say it does it even with the data cable out.........so I guess that means a short but your computer turns on with it plugged in.

I HAVE AN IDEA DING DING DING

take your FRIENDS computer and power it up WITH YOUR FRIENDS COMPUTER, then use the data cable on YOUR COMPUTER.  the power cable can't freeze YOUR computer because its not getting powered by it :yesnod:

Haha, I like where you went with that! Unfortunately it's because I got there before posting the thread  Great minds

Unfortunately, I have no means to do so, though. The laptops HDD connections are integrated into the MB and don't have separate cords that come out. I also don't have a SATA power (female) to SATA power(f) connection, which would do the trick.

Like I said, I'll ask around for an external docking thingy (or SATA to SATA connection), but idk if I'm going to buy one, when it might be the same cost to get it recovered. Gotta do some research.

I'm going to stop replying to this thread for today. My brain is fried and I need to BS for a bit. I'll check back to see what you guys have come up with (and what I find with my research) soon!
