humidity + malt extract: can I use this?

So I screwed up a little... apparently I didn't close my ME jar as well as I should, & humidity got to it, leaving me with a solid chunk of dry malt extract... I really need to start this project tonight... I was thinking if i broke up the solid mass & ran it through a coffee grinder it should still be okay?.. anybody out there ever run into the same situation & have positive results?..

Yes, you can use it. Just cut it up and weigh as normal. Might be a bit of a pain to dissolve but definitely usable.

Thank you... that's what I was thinking, & was gonna experiment with it anyway, but a little reassurance goes a long way...

You have to dissolve it with boiling hot water anyway. And when we use MEA it's the loss of moisture that stalls growth after periods of time, not that the nutrients degrade. Nutrients should stay safely suspended in water, so humidity should be fine. There might be a chance that something could have grown on it though, but that boil should do the trick? At least I would think.

i switched to liquid brewing malt because i had this issue continuously.
maybe keep it in freezer, but once its a solid brick, there is no going back.
i used it until it turned into malt mud, then i tossed it.
if ur pouring plates using grocery store agar chunks, i think u need to boil. but if u use vendor powder agar, u don't need to do anything except throw the shit in a bottle and PC. no boil, no filtering it with coffee filter, nada. it works every time, no matter the recipe.

I see what you mean... I'm having a hard time even getting it out of the container, it's gonna require a serious knife... still, I think I'll use boiling water & try to melt a 10 g chunk... if it doesn't melt I'll just figure it out tomorrow with a different recipe... ii don't have time to order or a local source for DME... gotta move outta the stix...

i would use mine even if clumpy until the surface of the malt clumps turned into a melted snow look, then i would toss it.
dog food is, IME, the most available agar nutrient u can find. grocery store, gas station, convenience store, corner store, etc. all over the place. dry dog food, cheaper and more available by the pound than malt. 10g DRY kibble, ground up (blender/coffee bean grinder/cocaine style with dollar bill and lighter) 10g agar 500ml water.
done.

once you dive in there (a screwdriver works better than a knife) .... break it up in 10 gram chunks that you can individually wrap in aluminum foil.

lol... no curious invaders here, I keep my home rather insanely private these days, necessarily...
I've successfully broken up the chunk & tested a small piece, it dissolved readily in boiling water, so I'm gonna roll with it... using 1/4 pint jars in lieu of plates, I'll just mix up the batch & pour, then pc the jars...
& do some dog food plates as well... that does seem rather damn handy... i'd love to run it side by side with the DME, compare results...

Humidity where I live is awful. I always make sure to use double seran wrap over the hole while screwing on my lid to my mix. Haven't have any issues yet.

I have had the same jar of malt for a couple of years now. I put it in a quart jar with a new lid and band. It's got a few weevils in out now. A little gnarly but it's still powered.
