Brand spanking new...

Brand new to a lot of things. This forum, the idea of shrooming, the idea of growing shrooms and new to a state that doesn't out-rightly ban the import of spores.
I moved from California to Oregon recently, from southern Cali to southern Oregon. And for all the stereotypes there are about Oregon and Washington state being big shroomer states, I have yet to see it.
However, I've never even done shrooms myself. I've been studying the research on shrooms, the pros versus (the very few, if any) cons and have decided that I want to get into microdosing and the occasional enlightenment trip. I also want to get into growing and have recently bought a kit.
Have yet to buy syringes or vials or anything, but the kit came in this last week. I've heard that buying just the spore prints, while easy-ish to extract and inoculate substrate with, can give you an end product that isn't so much like the original. So I'm kind of staying away from prints. Unless anyone in the community here has any contradictory advice. I'm willing to hear all knowledge and recommendations from folks who've been doing it forever.
I've been doing so much research the last 4 or 5 months. And I've only lived in Oregon for a month. So even before moving, I was anticipating this whole experiment. Not much of my research was pulled from this community, although I stumbled a few times onto posts here. Most of it was pulled from wikipedia, college papers on (standard) mushroom farming and other general knowledge of plant growth. I'm a bit of a green thumb and like the art of growing, anything and everything.
So I understand the need for a good substrate to contain nitrogen, some carbs and moderately well draining / airy (but not too airy) other bits which should contains at least moderate amounts of lignins (mostly found in hardwoods). I understand most of the crop cycle, the need for humidity, proper temperature and a sanitary container to put the sanitary substrate into. And I'm really excited about all of it. I'm sure I'll even learn a few of the fine details (here) that you can't read from science studies.
I guess my only concern is that I have yet to try the real deal product and feel like I'm jumping the gun a little by wanting to grow the stuff. I guess Medford isn't too far away, and have thought about going there, but I look like a cop trying to go under cover. Lol. The way I carry myself, I was in the military. So everyone will probably think I'm about to apprehend them after getting a bag of "the good stuff".
I look forward to learning a lot and, if this really progresses for me, sharing the results. Thanks in advance, everyone!

Hi and welcome to the Shroomery! You probably want to ask these kinds of questions in The Cult Forum.
Growing shrooms really isn't terribly difficult. Most people around here frown upon the kits because it's important to get the basics down of how to mix your substrate and make sure the moisture is okay throughout the whole process.

Absolutely. It's why I've been researching substrates. Kit for the first time, my own work for everything after. :P

A drought up here is when we don't get soaked in rain all spring
It has been pretty dry and hot though I am sure Cali is way worse off.

Yeah, Cali is bad, but I can see how folks here would think it's bad too. I guess you guys got these annoying midges up here. So you're walking around in mid 80 degree weather, and then get hit by a swarm of annoying things that land in your mouth and eyes and such...I hate these things.

We can only hope. But hopefully my fam will move to Oregon before that happens. I think they're pretty cool and all. I'd pick them for Team Zombie Apocalypse. Sister was Air Force security. Step Dad was biker gang. Mom was IRS. Those IRS people are serious business... Brother (ex-Army) is in Nevada. Don't have to worry about him.

You have no idea how many times I have been skating around in the evening when I get a mouthful of those things
The eyes is the worst, I just instinctively keep my mouth closed as much as possible when outside now

They're called "midges". Little bugs that look similar to mosquitoes, but that eat mosquitoes. The benefit is that you're not getting West Nile. The drawback is millions of these little green things damaging the paint on your car and flying everywhere you don't want them. And they like to stay in swarm-like formation. Really freaking stupid.
From what I've been told though, they only hang around for like 2 months out of the year before dying back and going into hibernation.
