Reishi Grow Log (Complete)
    #22208686 - 09/08/15 06:34 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Background: After working mostly with active sclerotia species, I decided to try my hand at Ganoderma lucidium (Reishi). I'll be fruiting in a 66qt monotub on pasteurized fuel pellet/sawdust.

8/29/15 - Received a LC syringe from a sponsor and PC'd 7 quarts of WBS. This is my first time working with WBS (I have only been using rye) and although I liked the simplicity of the tek, I couldn't believe how much the WBS expanded pre vs. post cook.

I soaked the WBS for approx. 20 hours, drained for 30min and PC'd for 90min @ 15psi. When I loaded them into the PC they were at 500mL-600mL and when I took them out, most have expanded to the top. I feel like this is really going to make shaking difficult, especially for a species like reishi that is supposed to be tough to shake.

8/30/15 - Inoculated 7 quarts with 1+ cc of LC. Jars are being kept in a 66qt tote with the lid ajar. Temps are in the 80's since my apt. is very hot. Not much I can do to get the temps any lower.

9/3/15 - Day 4. All jars have visible growth.

9/5/15 - Day 6. Myc is moving very fast. Much faster than the slow stone species I'm used to.

9/7/15 - Day 8. Jars are anywhere between 40-50% colonized. All jars were shaken. As I expected, it was difficult to make sure the WBS was getting distributed.

9/8/15 - Day 9. Jars are showing signs of rebounding after shake. Some shakes were much better than others, so I'm thinking I might have to shake again in the coming week to try to get all 7 to finish around the same time. At the rate it's been going, I think it's very possible I'll be spawning to bulk by the weekend.

9/13/15 - Day 14. 6 out of my 7 jars were 100% and had recovered after a final test shake. The 7th would have probably been fine to spawn, but I was a little bit iffy on a few uncolonized seeds so I decided to let it finish in a few days and maybe I'll G2G it or put it to agar.

I measured out 20 cups of fuel pellets and about a 1/4 cup of gypsum and added it to my bucket:

To this I added 18 cups of boiling water and covered. I put this bucket in another bucket and wrapped both in a blanket to try and keep the heat in as much as possible:

Once this cooled 5 hours later, I re-hydrated my WBS and spawned to my 66qt mono:

9/17/15 Day 18: 4 days after spawning to bulk. Temps have been in the mid 70's with the exception of one day when the temps were in the mid 60s. There is a clear increase in speed of colonization at the higher temps. Here is a picture of the top of the tub currently:

And here is a look at one of the sides. At the time, I thought I did a pretty good job mixing, but I think I missed a few spots on this side. The others are much more evenly dispersed. However, the rate of growth has been quick, so I'm pretty sure the myc will get there eventually.

9/22/15 Day 23: It's now been 9 days since spawning and the top of the top of the tub and all sides with the exception of the poorly mixed side are at 100% There is about a half dollar sized piece left on that side that's slowly finishing up. I used a clear liner so I can very easily see if there are any missing spots.

There are many grow logs on here that suggest fruiting right when the top is 100%. If that was the case, I would have fruited two days ago and it wouldn't have actually been ready. I don't mind the extra wait knowing that it's ready. Speaking of waiting, I have to go out of town this weekend, so even though it will be ready to fruit, I think I'm going to just let it consolidate for a few extra days. Anyone have experience letting a reishi mono consolidate after 100%?

9/28/15 Day 29: Came home today to this:

Tub looks to be knotting/forming blobs/pins. I pulled off the tape on the holes on the short sides and stuffed them loosely with poly and set up my light. I'll probably put a fan in the room eventually, but I still want to keep CO2 levels up for now.

The smell in the tub is nothing but fresh mushrooms, but one thing that concerned me is that when opening the lid, drops fell down on the myc and looks like it kind of knocked the myc back. You can see it in the pic above. The tub was completely 100% but now where those drops fell down it looks like those spots are not colonized. I'm hoping they come back within 24hours. Anyone ever have water dropping from the lid cause this?

10/8/15 Day 39: My concerns about the drips on the surface of the tub were unfounded. Since being exposed to FAE, the myc has become much thicker and stronger. It's pretty clear to see where the antlers are going to start forming.

My only potential setback occurred this morning. Ever since the tub was colonized at 100%, water began dripping down between the tub and the liner as the sub shrank. As a result, about a half inch of water pooled and collected there. I thought I could get away with leaving it and not draining it, but unfortunately I found this small speck of mold this morning.

This mold was only in the water and not on the sub itself. I tried to carefully lift the sub out of the tub so I could drain the water and clean, but in the process I accidentally cracked the middle of the sub. The crack doesn't reach the surface so hopefully I didn't do too much damage, I just couldn't justify leaving the moldy water in there. The tub has been returned to fruiting conditions and hopefully will continue making slow, steady, and contam free progress.

10/23/15 - The mold and cracked sub have not presented any problems to this point. In fact, the myc has consolidated so much near the crack that I can't even tell it happened at all. A lot has happened since my last update. First, some blobs appeared and began to get larger:

I let these blobs continue to grow without adjusting my loose poly in the top holes. Eventually it looked like they were forming ridges instead of the antlers I was after, so I tightened up the holes.

Color started to change. The blobs began to look like toasted marshmallows, finally taking on an antler shape:

As of today, this is the overall look of the tub:

The tallest antler is only about 3" but they're pretty wide and look to still be growing. My biggest concerns at this point is that they are still more of a matte color instead of that shiny varnish appearance I've seen in other grows. Also, many of the fruits have strange spotty discoloration on them:

I am also having a hard time determining whether they are too dry, or too wet because so much water is pooling in the bottom of the tub that I had to drill a small hole in the bottom to let it drain. Any advice or feedback would be appreciated.

Conclusion: Unfortunately not long after my last update I saw small spots of trich/mold on the sub surface:

In order to salvage the fruits I had, I harvested everything and tossed the sub. Disappointing, but I still ended up with about 60g dry.

I put the dry reishi in a coffee grinder and currently have it soaking in vodka in order to make a tincture. I'll probably experiment with taking some daily to see if I notice anything.

Although I had to toss the sub before it's time, I still had a great time with this grow. I took a grain from my remaining grain jar, put that to agar, and put the agar to 2 more quarts. Now I have a mini-mono going.

Thank you to everyone who was interested in this grow. If you have any questions I'll be glad to answer them. Good luck!

Awesome growlog! What are your temperatures like? I want to start ganoderma lucidium inside but don't know how well it likes the indoors or if conks are achievable indoors.

I also hear ganoderma lucidium is good for making materials out of the baked mycelium/substrate and I would love to use it with oysters to make 3gal pots for my cacti.

My temps were from about 70-80 during colonization of the WBS. Hotter than I was comfortable with, but I was at the mercy of the weather. The myc didn't seem to mind. The forecast is looking a bit cooler over the next week, so I expect the temps while in the tub to be from the high 60's to mid 70's.

I'm shooting for antlers primarily, but there are some grow logs that discuss some methods to initiate conks. From what I remember it involves high FAE.

I've never heard that about the baked substrate, but I could use some new pots for my cacti too. Let me know what you find.

Thats around room temperature so i should be fine. Im always between 60 and 80°F.

Check out:

http://m.youtube.com/user/EcovativeDesign

They are a small company working on the patent (bastards) and applying it to large-scale commerce. They pretend its about the environment but their motivation is money.

If you let a substrate block dry out in 90°F+ heat it forms a hard styrofoam like substance that can be used for a lot of things. I will make a TEK and post it here once I get enough spawn grown out and have a good mold for it.
.
It does slowly biodegrade so the pots would have to be repaced every so often, i believe every couple months to years depending on how thick they are.

Your substrate is nothing other than fuel pellets? That is the whole content?

OP has 1/4 cup of gypsum also.

Yeah nothing but fuel pellets and a 1/4 cup of gypsum. I spawned 6 quarts of WBS to approximately 16 quarts of bulk. That got me a depth of about 4" in a 66qt tub.

This is my first edible/medicinal grow so I didn't want to get too complicated with the sub. I've seen plenty of what I would consider good reishi grows on just fuel pellets or coir. Also, this way if I ever supplement down the road, I'll have a pretty basic benchmark to compare performance too.

Updated on 9/28. Should I be concerned with water drops from the lid knocking back the myc on the surface where it fell? You can see it pretty well in the new pic.

This is a really nice grow log, Scrimshaw. I am doing a very similar Reishi grow right now, only I am about a month behind you. I am excited to see the results of your harvest!
