FrankHorrigan for monotubs. Read and research a fuck load, be patient and ensure you take as much measure as possible in sterilizing every step of the process. Also source your prints from a reputable source, you dont want to phuck yourself on the first step of the process.

Just follow Roger Rabbits PF Tek if you don't want to fork out cash for a PC. If you have the money and time then go for monotub with Frank Horrigan's thread of how he gets shit done.

What's the go with popcorn tek, BRF tek and rye grain. Pro's and cons? I've got BRF ready to go, just waiting for my print to arrive. Is popcorn worth trying?

If this is your first time attempting to grow mushrooms then PF "BRF" cakes is the way to go.

It'll teach you all you need to learn about mushroom growth, needs etc. and after you learn that then you can worry about Rye, popcorn and bulk methods.

In my experience, bags with parboiled rice (cooked with 3/4 of the water) PC'ed were way easier than PF jars. Only downside is equipment overhead, such as a good pressure cooker, a heat sealer and autoclavable filter-patch bags with self-healing inoculation site.

Then again, I always see PF as the first thing people try.

After doing that a couple times then trying the above I wondered why in the world people make it so difficult for themselves :V

For example, a la PF:

The recipe is more involved and can end up not being airy enough.

Colonization time is slow, giving contamination more chance to take hold.

You can't break it up and mix which would make colonization even faster (see above).

Higher vector for contamination than a septum port.

Less room for substrate, especially after added vermiculite.

Bacteria and yeast are harder to detect as they can be invisible contaminants detectable by smell, which I noticed a lot more through a filter patch.

You can't make more sterile inoculation syringes using jars (that I know of, at least not from the jar itself)

I also think (and always have thought) casing is easier than a terrarium setup.

There's just a lot less to have to worry about and attend to.

First off I want to thank everyone in this community for being here, sharing their knowledge and help. It has been a tremendously helpful resource for learning about cultivation and finding the best places to order spores and what not.

I recently ordered a Mega kit from Midwest Grow Kits (I know you can do it for cheaper yourself) as well as Psilocybe cubensis B+ Strain Spore Syringes. Two weeks ago I inoculated the jars. A few days ago I got back home after being out of town for a few days and half of one of the 30 jars I have showed white growth.

The rest of the jars show no form of growth. One jar is a bit foggy but that's about it.

The temperature is set on medium (sometimes high when it gets cold here) and it comes on for 15 minutes every half an hour. The temperature fluctuates between 77 and 80 degrees, and the foil is loosely set on the jars.

Three sides of the container are covered in aluminum foil (from the inside) because otherwise the heat doesn't stay in there.

Also, my syringes were in the freezer for about 6 hours when I first got them

Is there anything I can do to insure that the rest of the jars get cultivated? Is it safe to call my first grow a fail after two more weeks (if no other jars show growth?)

And lastly, on a semi-serious note, will collecting my tears over this possible $300 failure and spreading them into the jars help my cause?

Your pics are definitely hard to make out. Do your jars have a dry verm layer on top together with 2 to 4 small open inoculation holes in the lids? If they do then the tin foil should be removed for gas exchange. Even with a filter the tin foil should be removed.

2 weeks is definitely slow but they could be slowed by temp being to low (85 F is ideal), too little gas exchange because of the tin foil, improper moisture content in the substrate (can't tell with your pic), and too little light, or any combination thereof. Also you mention having two strains with only 1/2 your jars showing growth so I'd wonder if all the growth is one strain (and presumably one syringe) and none on the other strain (and syringe). If you kept track of which jars are which you can probably figure it out if this is what may be the problem.
I wouldn't give up on the non-growing jars just yet. Raise their temp, take off the foil, and separate them from the rest (just in case contams do eventually show up) and give them another week or two to be sure.
If 50% of your grow works I wouldn't cry too much, especially on a first grow, 15 cakes working will easily carry you to grow #2.
Freezing the spores shouldn't hurt them but I stand to be corrected on that as I think I've read that but have no personal experience with freezing (where I live I have the opposite problem).

Thanks for your reply!

There is a dry verm layer on top, along with 4 holes. I will go ahead and remove the foil as well as raise the heat. The guide said to keep it between 77 and 80 degrees, so I'll get it up to 82 or so.

In regards to not having enough light, I was under the impression that no light is necessary during this stage. Other than a small amount of light that leaks in where I have the box setup, the jars get no light exposure. aDo you recommend I get a bulb setup next to the box for a few hours a day?

Also I meant that one half of one jar is showing growth, leaving 29 jars devoid of any growth signs :0 I would be more than chipper if only half of the jars had growth but that's not the case unfortunately.

You mentioned that 15 cakes could carry me to my second growth. What did you mean by this? I know it's a noob question, but I do not know what the name of the process is for going from grow 1 to 2 without getting more syringes.

And there's only one strain across all of the jars. Hope to see some growth once the foil comes off. Really appreciate the tip!

By the way, in your signature photo is that mushroom psychedelic or gourmet?

That means you can get your own prints, hence, make your own syringes, or, if you're feeling lucky, you may also clone some mushroom tissue by doing sterile agar works... or if your impatient and wanna do it right now, you can get mycelial tissue to agar, clean up a little and it would be good for side projects (mycelium inoculation)...

That dry verm layer is your protection against contams. If you keep the tin foil on the layer starts absorbing moisture from the substrate and unable to dry starts to loose its effectiveness as a barrier.

There dosen't seem to be agreement in what I've read as to whether light is or isn't beneficial during colonization though those that advocate it don't seem to claim it has more than a small benefit so I wouldn't worry about it too much. I went with what RR recommended which was to leave the jars exposed to ambient but not direct light.

Quote:

Also I meant that one half of one jar is showing growth, leaving 29 jars devoid of any growth signs :0 I would be more than chipper if only half of the jars had growth but that's not the case unfortunately.

That's too bad I thought you'd succeeded with 15. That one cake will fully colonize just give it time and don't forget a consolidation period of 5 to 7 days before birthing. With 29 out of 30 jars showing no growth at all I'd start to suspect that your spores may be at fault. I can't think of what else would effect so many that were, presumably, prepared and treated all alike. My next best guess would be a problem with the moisture content of the substrate.

Pablo has mentioned how you can use what does grow to make more, which is good to keep in mind, but all I meant was with the successful harvest of 15 cakes you'd have more than enough fruit to see you through a second grow. My mistake.

I hope it helps.

You'd have to ask the guy in the pic (which isn't me) but barring that we can all pretend it is a new strain of cubes, "XXL+".
