Art Rock

I am surprised I never heard of this genre until today...
Pretty interesting, its very similiar to progressive rock. Here is the difference according to wiki:
Quote:
with progressive putting a greater emphasis on symphony and melody, whilst the former tends to focus on avant-garde and "novel sonic structure".
Quote:
Art rock took influences from several genres, notably classical music, as well as experimental rock, psychedelia, avant garde, folk, baroque pop, and, in later compositions, jazz.
Sounds like my cup of tea, I guess this band I have been digging Ambrosia is an rt rock band. Interesting stuff.

I have heard of none of those bands I am overloaded in new bands right now though. I have like 30-50+ new albums from bands I have never heard I need to work through.
I will list some off. Have you heard of:
Astra Ambrosia Affinity Ash Ra Tempel Automatic Man Badger Buffalo Blue Pills Camel Captain Beyond Caravan Catapilla Creative Rock Egg Electric Light Orchestra Electric Sun Flower Travellin' Band Freedom Hawk Galactic Supermarket Gamma Gong Gravy Train Hawkwind Head East Lake Masters Of Reality Mountain Nektar Novalis Porcupine Tree Quartz Red Rider Quicksilver Messenger Service Sweet Smoke Zon
That is just a bunch of random stuff, some of it is harder or softer rock and some is super psychedelic or bizarre.

Astra/Ash Ra Tempel are old school favies of mine.
so is Camel, Captain Beyond, Caravan, Egg, ELO, Flower Travellin' Band (japanese rock, like as i posted above), Gong, Masters of Reality (old school stoner rock), Mountain (Climbing!), Quicksilver Messenger Service....
Hawkwind i've always been sorta averse too, not that they're bad or anything, just not my favorite. same with Porcupine Tree. but the rest i ain't heard of before.

Yeah Ash Ra is pretty interesting for sure.
I am just now really discovering all these bands, so much great music
Hawkwind is one of the ones I haven't listened to much of yet but I wouldn't have downloaded it if it wasn't interesting

Judging by how long it took to get a reply you were not the only one
I had never heard the term until earlier which is why I made a thread.

I try to listen to everything. I listen to Country, Modern Rock, Christian Alternative, Classical music (mostly string), Rap/Hip Hop, etc.
Just tried a little Art Rock. Could see myself adding a bunch of artists from this genre. Pretty good.

hey 420, check out PLP and KDD, they are some real rompers in Art Rock.
here is a track from both, but you have to excuse the quality, i had to compress the shit out of PLP especially to get it on here, so you may just want to DL yourself to see what's up.
KDD http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22169858#22169858
PLP (Pär Lindh Project) (20+ minute track) http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22170023#22170023

Once I am done with this Frank Marino & MH album I will check em out.
PLP reminds me the Alan Parsons project is pretty damn art rocky. Or prog, they are so damn similiar though

Kdd seems pretty interesting. I dig the violin, I love me song strings.
Pretty nice n relaxing, sounds like some Celtic influences or something perhaps. Nice synth too.
That was some interesting fusion.
PLP seems pretty interesting too, has a more classical vibe too it. Nice orchestral female vocalist n stuff. Sounds pretty medieval to me.
Kinda reminds me of Klockwerk Orange's Abracadabra, though that has a much more psychedelic vibe and is even more classical perhaps.
Those were both pretty sweet.
I really have been digging Zon, they have some pretty groovin prog songs. This song is interesting:
The whole album is pretty weirdly entertaining.

trust me, PLP is all over the place. the record that track is from is a three song record. song two is mainly slow and sonically driven, while the first is a mix of classical and is more progressive...and the final 20 minute epic has got medieval music, piano to galore, and many rockin' awesome parts interspersed.
you might also want to check out:
Calomito Forgas Band Phenomena October Equus Present Pikapika Teart Subtilior miRthkon NeBeLNeST Pochakaite Malko French TV The Science Group Forever Einstein Happy Family 5uu's U Totem Philharmonie Cartoon Birdsongs of the Mesozoic (rare) Zamla Mammaz Manna The Wrong Object Camembert Pocket Orchestra Grand General
though some of these could be deemed "Avant-Prog", but they're all art rock bands in their own respect. see Camembert for an Art Rock experience unlike any other.

definitely alot of Celtic influences...but there are a couple of real rockin' tracks too, such as Kraken's Brain is Blasting!

Well thanks for opening up the rabbit hole.. haha but seriously thanks
Also, they're more on the punk/alternative side, but definitely check out Failsafe's album Routines if you can find it. I walked into a show in the middle of their set and it changed my life. R.I.P. Matt Cogley, I hope you're rockin the afterworld

Don't forget about Carmen!!!
Their song Bulerias kicks arse.
Art rock is very subjective though..just like Prog.
Who can say what's arty and what isn't?
I consider some of these and to incorporate art rock elements: Nine inch nails Mr bungle Tomahawk Tool A perfect circle Soft machine King crimson..just to name a few

I even take popularity as a sign it could not be for me as so much popular music is crap IMO
Moe. should be in this thread as well, they are some amazing prog.

Well of course that is true too, look at band like Pink Floyd. Many have huge followings.
I meant stuff that gets lots of radio play now a days n stuff, not everything popular.
