Ack!

I've been having of unusual worsening problems over the last few months. I've been using basic techniques for a long time and suddenly I'm seeing side colonies in my agar dishes, dishes stored in certain containers completely being covered with bacteria, unopened control jars getting mold, mushrooms developing spiky bumps near the base, mycelium disappearing from colonized spawn jars, spore prints that should have been practically sterile contaminated with mold spores, etc. Now I've confirmed my suspicions. Thousands of little mites, just barely large enough to even perceive when looking closely and they're all over the area where I keep my spawn jars. Apparently, and I watched as they did this, they can crawl right through cotton and polyfil filters, I also have some jars that use Tyvek filters taped on and they crawl right under the tape. Anyhow, I'm not sure the best way to deal with them. They're so hard to see I don't know how I could possibly be sure I got them all, although they only seem to be present in a small area of one room.

I don't know. I stopped sealing my petris and switched to storing them in filtered cases. Which I guess wasn't a very good idea because they get through the filters

i saw on a vendor site "sticky mats" for plates, and i always wondered "Why would someone need this?" and i guess ur situation is the answer. i wonder where they came from initially? its kinda scary they are that small. had a gnat problem once, and it was bad cause they would easily go from tub to tub, and i didn't know where they were coming from. i think it was the poo, and i wasn't pasteurizing hot or long enough.

Gnats are what I suspected when I first saw the petris, they had little trails on them like something had walked around on the surface. Fortunately the inside of my SAB seems to be clear of them. I have about a dozen plates in it I just poured a few hours before noticing the mites but I got pissed at my roll of cling wrap a while back and threw it away so I don't have anything to seal them with at the moment I suppose I have some ziplock bags but I don't know if that would be effective in keeping them out.
You can see some on this tray. They're the little white specks.

Salt should kill the larvae...I don't know how you would do it, maybe a saltwater solution and let it sit for s day before clean up... any idea what kind of mites they are? I wonder what the life span is on them.

Paul stamets mentions these sticky mats in one of his books. I think it would be a good start. Build a mote of sticky mats around your shit.

I don't know but I think I've seen them once before on a single substrate and simply tossing the substrate was effective. I guess the difference this time is I had a couple of my trays sitting near where I keep my spawn jars and they were just spreading between jars and could have spread from the outside of the jars to some my petris when I doing transfers. It's hard to believe I didn't see them before because now that I'm now that I'm looking for them I'm seeing them on everything.

Once again getting rid of the contaminated substrates (spawn, trays, agar cultures in this case) seemed to be very effective. I can find no mites anywhere, at least none that are large enough to see and are moving.
Here's one more horror pic. This was the worst of the worst buried away in a box of colonizing jars

Man, that sucks, as if we don't have enough to worry about with bacteria and mold. I feel for ya bro, nothing to do but wage all out chemical warfare on those little fuckers

This is craziness. These things are still able to get into my unopen jars. I even found some in unopen agar bottle. Hopefully that's the source because I got rid of it. What's really bad is it's not the little white ones I posted a picture of. It's some little reddish ones that can literally only be seen with a microscope. How do you stop something that small?
