Hi all, this is my first post here. Found a foot tall mushroom in uk, isle of wight, looks like lepiota, my question is, is my guess right? and are there any similar poisonous mushrooms? I'd like to eat it, also if edible, how would you suggest preparation for best taste experience?
ok, trying to attach picture but it says only movie clips allowed, what's that about?

it's weird to upload from a phone here. Post it on Imgur and link that way, it's easier.
have you ever been to Isle of Lucy?

I'm guessing by the fact you are referring to it as Lepiota that you are reading from an old guide. This is now called Macrolepiota procera, a choice edible. Whether there are any similar species depends on your ability to differentiate between actual similar species and not. To some people all mushrooms look the same. The closest similar looking species thare are poisonous are members of the Lepiota genus. However they are only superficially similar and much smaller in size than these, but even so you should look into the deadly species of Lepiota to know what you are dealing with. Some suggest to only pick species of M. procera above a certain size to make accidentally picking a Lepiota impossible. The closest looking species that is not poisonous is Chlorophyllum rhacodes, also a choice edible. These are generally smaller, live in more wooded habitats and lack the snake skin texture on the stem. http://www.first-nature.com/fungi/macrolepiota-procera.php As for cooking. Cook them as you would shop bought mushrooms.

that looks very similar to what i've got but is Lepiota brunneoincarnata and is supposed to be poisonous. Not sure I want to eat it now...

Superficially yes it looks similar. There are many key differences though. However, i think you should go with what your brain is telling you, which is that you don't know enough about how to ID it to be confident about what it is. This attitude will keep you alive. When you've spent a bit more time with this species and others you will be able to ID beyond doubt. But if it interests you, the biggest difference is that the Lepiota species in question is much, much smaller. Up to 4cm apparently, hence avoiding anything below 10cm across.

What I have done now is I broke the cap up into segments and distributed them across the garden where other mushrooms grow, hoping for spores to fall out and maybe we'll have some come out next time.
Also the top of the cap has strong bad smell, like rotting, the bottom not so strong.
I've made a couple pictures of the gills:
