Has anyone ever used pre-poured agar petri dishes? I found them for about $1.80 a piece.

You can clone your oyster on other media than agar. Agar is lab-grade stuff, optimal but not necessary. If you can manage to scope clean tissue (which is a bit hard with wild specimen, specially if it was raining on the mushroom), you can throw it in grain jar, brf flour, coffee, you name it

Yeah I thought about doing that, but thought it would be better if I did it on agar to clean it up. I actually have someone working on the wild one I found. Just kind of wanted to experiment with doing agar for a first time.

Buy some dishes off ebay and some agar agar powder off amazon and pick up some potatoes for PDA. You will spend a fraction of the cost and learn more. I can blow through dishes, i typically make 3-4 of each strain especially if im trying to isolate or get rid of a contam. At $2 a pop you would run up your bill quick unless you super stingy.

I'll probably do that. There was a good grocery store agar tek on here somewhere. I'll probably follow that.

My favorites:
Stros agar prep: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=2&Number=18431006&fpart=&PHPSESSID=
Pastywhytes easy agar tek: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19208976#19208976
Grocery store agar tek: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7081785#7081785
I personally use pastywhytes tek but use square ziploc containers, blue food coloring, and pre-mix PDA powder from out-grow.com
So far i have had almost no issues other than not getting my agar/water ratio right from rushing and laziness. It is so quick and easy compared to starting from scratch.

I've used the grocery store agar tek with 0 contaminations for about 50 dishes. The airflow is so good the dishes will dry out in about 3-4 weeks if you're not carefull. I probably need to buy another oyster syringe :/
The main thing I do is I make sure that I completely dissolve any agar particles. It's annoying trying to see growth with cloudy agar. Unfortunately I don't think I wrote it down, but I was able to use a little less water and ended up with dishes with a layer of agar that was the perfect thickness and opacity. It's really nice when they're done right.

I'd recommend buying a mix and making your own plates instead of trying to boil potatoes or get pre-poured dishes. I've only maybe ever poured 100 dishes myself, but if you get sterile plates in bulk you can get them around $.40 per unit with shipping included. I think RR mentions in his videos that it's not worth the time, effort, or mess to make your own PDA when 100 grams of MEA is $12-$15.

That's what I'll probably end up doing is buying a mix. I think I've seen a tek where they use small canning jars. I'll probably try that. I'm going to have to wait until winter time though, when I don't have so much outside work to do.
