Monotubbing with EZ Felt
    #22202810 - 09/07/15 03:57 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Ok so decidedly, I don't like polyfil. On my last batch I couldn't quite get my bottom holes right so my humidity kept plummeting... Anyway, long story short,  I'm giving EZ felt a try.

Thats what its looking like right now. I used tape so if it doesn't work out I won't have to scrape RTV off.

So here's the colony now

Took off my tape and set up for fruiting 4 days ago, already getting hard just looking at all the pins.
But the ones that are going fastest look like this [sorry for the blur, this camera is shit]

I notice the stems are looking disproportionately fat and back when I did cakes this was a symptom of dehydration. Overly concerned or do I need to switch to poly for the bottom?

UPDATE: SUCCESS!
And we have are first veil tears. Now from a scientific standpoint I have a lot to consider. This is the first batch I used whole oats on, so colony filled out much quicker and fuller. Also I was able to move my tub to a room with better ambient conditions. Because of this I can not say for certain that the Easy Felt worked better than the polyfil. However, for my purposes and needs, I am very happy with the results.

can't hurt
just pay attention to the sub surface, if it starts looking dry give it a light mist.

Ok, you don't suppose the felt is restricting flow too much, do you?

I've seen other people pull it off but I havent tried it myself. looks like its doing its job to me, think those pins would have looked different if the felt was too restrictive.

Ok were still blowing and going, sub is still nice and moist, but some stems are still looking a bit funky fat.

The other growth hasn't stalled or slowed yet so right now I'm chalking it up to genes... But I could be wrong

Yeah my last one had one that ended up being 4g dry. After eating the bark like stem I suddenly could appreciate the beauty of the smaller sized ones

Got the first pickin's drying now.
What do most people do to patch the sub after they harvest, cause it basically took the top layer of myc off when I pulled em (My technique needs more work )
I thought at first to just try to press the removed bits back into the sub, then I thought about them being damaged, so I dunno.
