What is this? It is growing on the side of a maple.

It is flexible and slightly gooey feeling. It has a white bottom.

-------------------- I give you the choice of 2 pills.
With each containing one of the following: Cyanide... Psilocin... Would you take the risk? Didn't think so. This is why Positive Identification prior to consumption is important.

Not G.lucidum, Ganoderma sessile.
G.lucidum is native to Europe and has a range that possibly extends into western China, where oddly it grows on pine... It is not currently known to occur in North America. Those reports that say it is widespread in the east are outdated.
Three main species in the eastern United states, G.tsugae, G.sessile and G.curtisii.
G.tsugae is most common on hemlock, but may grow on birch and rarely maple. G.curtisii is most common on hardwoods like oak or maple but can be found on pine in New England. G.sessile has essentially the same hosts as G.curtisii, but has a larger range in the north.
G.tsugae and G.curtisii almost always have a stipe, where G.sessile is lacking. G.sessile will also usually bleed a yellow resin when the white edge is pricked because it is in the G.resinaceum clade.
It looks like this one has released spores, if you have access to a microscope you can confirm by looking at the spores preferably under 1000x oil immersion.
They will look something like this. "smooth"

Whereas G.curtisii, G.tsugae and G.lucidum will look more like this. Notice how these spores have larger speckles. "rough"

Just had a glass of tea with a bit of honey. It was not bad at all. I have a pitcher of the stuff in the fridge.
