Oyster bags - too wet?

My first attempt at pasteurised straw bags. I am wondering if they are too wet to be optimal?

Agreed. If there isn't a filter patch on the other side somewhere, they won't do well without air holes.
More photos would help. But basically, I think that if there is no pooling at the bottom of the bag, it should be ok. Definitely get some air holes on those though. It would also help if you could get the straw cut into smaller pieces.

I am using dead standard bags with a filter patch. They are there, is the filter patch is sufficient?
Pic from another angle.

My first thought was, it's not compact enough, I think that's why someone said to cut the straw into smaller pieces. Anyone else agree?

Filter patch bags are fine, just don't let the substrate touch the patch. I use them all the time, because I'm just a hobbyist. If you were commercial, they wouldn't be cost effective at all. When they get about 75% colonized I cut my holes. First I cut the top off a little (I use big bags), and fold the top over. Then I sit it upside down. I cut five holes in an X pattern, on one side for things like pearl and pink oyster. Three across the top for lion's mane so they can hang down.

Exactly. With smaller pieces the substrate compacts better and colonizes better.

Thanks for the advice. I have a few other quarts of King Oyster spawn ready in a few days, will try getting the straw finer. Checking on these bags today they appear to be just fine, colonising well so far.
