SAB with magnetic closures

Nothing new here, but I find the design to be a good one. As an added bonus it's very low cost. The SAB I made this week-end - partially out of boredom and partially in anticipation of need - uses a clear tub (Walmart, Lowes, Target or Home Depot). I used coffee-can sized access holes. Lacking a hole saw that size, I used a soldering iron (tedious, but worked) to melt along the marked circle from the coffee can and then coarse sanded. Our coffee cans aren't metal. For those with metal ones, heat the can and melt that way.
The twelve magnets (VERY powerful) were acquired from Hobbyking for cheap. The covers are cut from sturdy paper plates used for picnics or parties. The handles are color coded soda bottle caps glued onto the paper with epoxy. The different colors are because I made no effort to orient or align the magnets between the right and left sides. Obviously you MUST match polarity of the three pairs on each side or they may repel instead of attract. The pix tell the whole story.

Interesting design, i just attach a tyvek sleeve to the holes and have a small flap covering it when its not in use. You could've used a bigger tub tho, I find it difficult to navigate in my 66qt SAB when working with a lot of jars. I'd rather have too much space than not enough.

you guys sure go to long lengths. never felt like anything more than 2 holes was necessary or even beneficial. magnetic holes on a mono, sure... but I guess I'm missing the point of covering your armholes. when I'm not using my sab, its doubling as a laundry basket. when I'm working in my sab, my hands are outside of it to sterilize the needle and to iso my hands down. that takes like 30 seconds. are you really putting up the magnetic covers during this short duration? Seems like a unnecessary step that could cause more air disturbance than doing nothing.

I personally don't use sleeves or flaps either, just the holes. I'm a small dude, with hella small arms, and am used to working in confined spaces. Just remove arms to use torch and go back in, slow and steady. Very rarely do I ever get something contaminated.
I bought a new tote this morning for a new SAB . It's fun just making things.

I'm 6'0 200lbs, and my sab armholes are the size of progresso soup cans and they are perfect. I should honestly remake my sab prep video, because there is a lot I don't do anymore, and have yet to see a change in success rate.

Like what? All I do is clean, and soak down SAB. Prepare whatever it is I'm doing. Clean arms, brush teeth, and facemask. Clean clothes. That's all I do while working in my SAB, I work in my clean room, so that helps.

I agree. When I have a "big job" (almost never) I just use my flow hood. For a simple one-plate transfer agar to agar, especially when I'm employing my alcohol lamp, the flow hood is overkill, and a bit of a nuisance.

Yeah, you are missing the point. The covers don't go on and off once the job has commenced unless something particularly urgent comes up in those few minutes and the job must be interrupted. The covers go on AFTER the inside is cleansed to allow the air to settle and to make it more "still" inside the box - the whole purpose of a STILL air box.

But once you take the covers off and put your arms inside, you are pushing the outside air inside your SAB anyway, which makes having them on pointless.

Well that's ALWAYS an unavoidable consequence of using an SAB which happens for everyone. What IS avoidable is the uncontrolled entry of airborne particulates from the period of time when you sanitize it until use. THAT is the sole benefit other than the fun of adding it on an otherwise boring long holiday week end.
I have a kick ass flow hood, so I don't need an SAB...but there are others that don't have the $$$ to spend $600.00 on a flow hood from Fungi Perfect and would appreciate an under $10.00 solution to dramatically lower their contamination rate.
