Why is this San Pedro so skinny

Hey so I got another San Pedro today except this is a bigger boy. Why is it so skinny? The guy had a lot of them but they don't look so fat like other ones I've had. He said he always grew it in the shade. Could that be it?
I wanted to cut the big one down and replant it so I can have new pups to grow.
Is there a way to grow them so they come out thick?
I hope I didn't get ripped of

Lack of fertilizer, underwatering, shade? It could be a factor of things, maybe even a genetic trait.

To me it just doesnt look that skinny, especially for a supposedly shade grown cactus. Adding ferts and giving sun would result in a fat ass cactus though, but I've seen skinnier, more etoliated cacti before.
Check out this one year old seedling I bought, it was quite etoliated and very skinny
 It was 12" tall too

I was probably comparing it to all the pictures online of thicker cactus. But yea I don't think the guy took to much care of them besides re planting new buds.
I got them for 40 bucks. It was pretty much my only source so I got them. I'm planning on cutting them to get new pups. That way in the future from now I'll have a decent garden of these.
Oh man Grownright that one does look pretty skinny lol

$40, how tall are they? Seems about right though if they are as tall as I can judge from the picture. It looks to be close to two feet tall? maybe more? I think thats a solid buy.
What zone are you in? Im lucky that I live in the south so my cacti can put on some bulk in one growing season. If you're as lucky as I am, I would cut those up into good sized logs and root them horizontally (log style) You'll have a butt load of cacti growing then

i think its probably because of the container, because pedros roots really grow out sideways quite far and vigorously and probably help to soak up more water
but it looks fine as it is and the tops are fat. i would just keep watching that the bottom doesnt get ugly looking

I haven't yet measured the height of them but there pretty big. This is the first time I've ever owned any. I was walking through the local flee market and I saw a tiny one for sale and I was like no way so I got it for 5 bucks. I got excited and wanted more and remember about a dude who had some so I got this one right after.
So I should lay down the cuts horizontal? I saw this on a YouTube video and was wondering why the guy didn't plant it vertically. Huh that's interesting. I'm definitely going to try that
I stay in Central California. The weather is pretty constant here. It usually stays pretty warm.

No prob man, and have fun. You're plants are gonna get big as fuck in California, I'm excited for you man. Laying them horizontally gives them more surface area to root, giving them a head start on rooting, and with a bigger rootball = bigger plant. With that bigger rootball you get a faster absorption of nutrients, so you'll get a lot pups Make sure your logs are at least 6" long btw, make sure to keep the soil dry until the roots form, it takes a while. Try not to pick it up often from the soil, I find it roots faster the less handled

The same exact plant will reportedly grow with different physical characteristics depending on what part of the world it is grown, so those guys may fatten right up for you depending on where you are and how you treat them, wouldnt worry about it, you def didnt get ripped off.

I'm going to get some fertilizer for them and have them more in the sun so they can hopefully grow nice and fat

Make sure to get one with a low N value. I use cactus juice by grow more, its ratio 1-7-6

It needs water. Surprised no one has said that already.

True, I wSnt really thinking about that. My immediate concern would have been to repot it if I didnt want to take cuttings. How could you tell it needs water?

I cut them main one into about four 6 inch cuttings today. Hopefully they dry properly so I can plant them in a few weeks when they start rooting
