Cops fire 84 times, only hit the suspect once.

Being a cop is not an easy job. We know this. But there are still some aspects to it that should not be that difficult to execute. Like, for instance, shooting a suspect. It should not take 84 attempts to hit a target. And yet, that’s exactly what happened last Friday when NYPD officers got in a gun fight with an attempted murder suspect in Bushwick. As the Huffington Post reports, out of the 84 shots fired at the man, only one actually hit him.

Early that morning, 27-year-old Jerrol Harris ran from the cops after attempting to steal a Brooklyn man’s car and shooting him in the arm. Police chased Harris who fired at them with a black .40-caliber Taurus Millennium pistol, according to The New York Times. After 84 shots fired by six different police officers, Harris was finally struck in the calf and brought down. Harris has 12 prior arrests, including four robberies and gun possession. He’s facing several counts of first-degree and second-degree attempted murder, as well as other felony charges.

Meanwhile, the NYPD should consider beefing up their target practice lessons.

Probably rookie gun fight jitters

Next time they'll be more relaxed and be able to hit their target something like twice in 63 shot attempts

Baby steps

84 shots, 6 officers, 14 shots each on average.

What was the distance? How fast was the guy running? What kind of guns are they using? 6 guys missing 14 times each means that something defintely complicated things... Nobody misses 14 times if the target is obvious

No idea there's video though. Doesn't seem like it was even rapid fire. Video also says they kept an eye on him while he tried to find cover. Meaning he wasn't really in a good cover position. I'm no marksman, but I'm pretty sure with second long aimed shots at someone not behind solid cover, I wouldn't need 84 shots to hit the target.

cops punch holes in paper silhouettes.
i have gone shooting with ex dod, military and police. every time i take them out to my little slice of the desert they all ask, where is the 7 yard shot?

this 84 and 1 does not surprise me, specially if they are trying to make their glocks go further than 7 yards.

Sounds like they need to be sent back to the Storm Trooper Academy for blaster training

Really? 7 yards is like training wheels or something. Pretty much impossible to miss. Or maybe a better comparison is bumper bowling.

I started out at almost twice that distance. Surprised they'd be trained that close up. I wasn't incredibly accurate, but I was only ever off by a couple of inches at most. Guess it has to do with what they deem to be effective range? If I were a cop or military or something, I'd want to have experience based on more than 7 yards. The last time I went I did a few mags at 25 and still managed a pretty damn decent grouping for a pistol.

Prolly because 75-90% of police shootings happen within 7 yards.

Damn 20 yards is a lot for a pistol. With a subcompact at 7 yards I have probably 5-6" groups and that's better than a lot of people.

Yeah. I mean if you can shoot effectively at 20 yards, 7 is a cake walk. It just makes more sense to train for the extreme, rather than rely on statistics.

even if that is true.. something tells me that if you can reach out at 25 yards, 7 would be childs play.

but who knows what them cops think of mang.

yea I agree

It might be that for qualification or something. I read an article last year about the fbi switching to 9mm from 40 because of recoil issues. I mean jesus if you are a federal agent and can't shoot well with a .40 you should probably find a different line of work. They went from 10mm to 40 to 9mm... what's next 380?

With a subcompact, sure. I've only shot one, but I don't like them. I can only base it on the one (It was a Sig IIRC) Fucking things are hard to hold onto and the handling is ridiculous. Took me way longer to reacquire the target than with my SR45 or wife's M9. I wasn't very accurate with it, either. I don't like them lol :snub:

The M9 at 25 yards, I get about 3-4 inch groupings through 30 or so rounds. I'm not quite as accurate with the Ruger but still reasonable.

That's impressive, how's the trigger on the M9? I've been full size shopping pretty sure I'm gonna go with a 1911.

And to be fair it had a pinky extension... those are a must
