Yeah, it's beautiful territory out there. Take a camera, and if you can time it with the leaves changing. I wouldn't recommend doing it alone. Are you saying you're carrying in everything you think you'll need for the month, or stocking up as you go? Your map trail is going to decide whether or not this will be enjoyable.. basically how deep are you planning to go? You're going to be fucking around with a few hunting seasons as well so I would recommend the blaze orange cap and vest..
If you have a route picked out, upload a map pic with your path outlined on it. I spent some of my growing up time in that area, Id like to see what route you'll be hitting.

Definitely beautiful! Amanita is spot on with the advice to take a camera and a blaze orange hat. I'm in southern VA and the start of hunting season is just a few days away. Nothing yet as far as leaves are concerned but give it three or four weeks and they will be a sight to behold from some remote mountain vista.
Do you have any sort of itinerary yet? Virginia is home to over five hundred miles of the trail, plus another 400 between NC and TN.. I'd recommend the stretch through the Shenandoah Valley in VA. VERY nice trail through park with plenty of options for resupply / road access if you need to bail out or just want a night back in town.
If you have experience with long distance backpacking, you'll be fine going alone. I'm sure you wouldn't just jump into something like this? You'll likely meet a few south bound thru hikers, not to mention all the day hikers, depending on the section you choose.

Virginia is my favorite state. It's so beautiful - especially this time of year. I've seen two black bears while in the woods there too, and once was in the Shenandoah National Forest. On the trail, on the way back to the car, there was a black bear crossing the path (we didn't see it walking at first) it had stopped and sat there watching us. I asked my boyfriend at the time if it was a bear statue (lol), when he said no I started to panic. Afterwards, after it had walked away, I was just freaking out about how lucky we were to have seen another bear up close like that (20 feet away, maybe closer). Anyways, Virginia is gorgeous. I hope you have a wonderful time!

Enjoy Grayson Highlands and the surrounding national forest. That part of the trail is one of my favorite places in VA.
