Just one of the oysters my nephew found yesterday. There were about 5 more about half the size of this one. Unfortunately most were infested with worms.

Well this is the perfect time to start agar!
In the mean time, It may not be perfectly sterile but, take a small piece of oyster tissue. wrap in a brown paper bag, or sandwich it inside a chunk of corrugated cardboard. get it SLIGHTLY DAMP, NOT WET! (like 1 or 2 spays from a spray bottle, not a dunk underwater) and then put that in a plastic bag. Mycelium should start to grow onto the paper in a few days.

I have done that before. Actually had Pleurotus ostreatus pin on paper towels, but didn't really fruit. I just took this monster oyster and made 3 zip lock baggies with the tissue. Maybe I could find some one on here with the experience and equipment to put it to agar, and make me some LC? If the paper towels colonize, I could probably ship it to someone. Don't know, but at least I can keep the genetics going till I figure something out.
Question for anyone: Once I have a spore print on aluminum foil, what is the best way to store it?

Whoa! I just noticed that this oyster smells very strongly of apricot! Now I know that chanterelles smell like apricot, but all the oysters I have encountered, smell like anise. WTF?! It's strong smelling too.
