Trump * 7
    #22196659 - 09/06/15 10:53 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Can this be believed?  Donald Trump for president of the United States?  The man is an idiot!  And a slimebag weasel of a businessman, too.

I don't think anyone need look any further for concrete evidence of America's downward trend -- our decadence and decline.  Our civilization has grown ripe, and is now starting to rot.

This nonsense with Trump surging in the polls just shows the total lack of political savvy among a public that is too stupid to know the difference.  How fucking irresponsible this is on the part of the American people.

George Will, some time back, called Trump a "bloviating ignoramus."  I don't think one can get closer to the mark than that.

"Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard."  --H.L. Mencken

He just won South Carolina.  Victory speech.  Moving on to Nevada.  "I love the Hispanics and the Hispanics love me."  Something about building a wall along the entire Mexican border and forcing the Mexican people to pay for it.  Something about how our military is too weak and we need to increase defense spending [beyond the current ~$500 billion].  Something else, unclear, started to black out at this point...

Fucking surreal, is what.

Just saw on Fareed Zakaria's program that if Trump's tax plan were enacted (were he elected, of course), it would add $11.2 trillion to the deficit through 2025.

So much for fiscal conservatism, I guess.

You're right about Bernie; nothing of his would ever get through Congress.  He would need at least to have the Senate, and it doesn't look right now like it's going to have any chance of going back to the Democrats at all.  One thing I will say for Mrs. Clinton is that she could get things through.  She knows how to make deals.  Whether that legislation would be any good or not is a matter for political and philosophical debate.

This thread was moved from Political Discussion.

Reason:
This thread was started with the intention of debating the ideas philosophically.  However, in time it has taken on an exclusively political air, so I feel it is better suited henceforth in Political Discussion.

I've been basically everywhere in the West. Americans treat each other like dogshit. There is so much more solidarity and trust in every other Western nation that America is like a war zone in comparison.

I'm really curious to know how my taxes will go up if Sanders wins. Not that I care about my taxes going up, because more taxes just means more services. But this is frankly a bizarre assertion and I wonder how you can justify it.

This is particularly perceptive, viktor.  It is true that we are essentially kind of like narcissistic pirates over here, and it's every man for himself.  God forbid we help our fellow man in need of it.  There is no social cohesion whatsoever; community is nonexistent, and even neighbors hardly ever talk to each other.  And Americans don't even realize any of this.  They're too busy waving and worshipping flags and watching Nascar over one too many Budweisers.  Times are many when I wish I could live somewhere else.

Hey, I thought you were British until this post

Anyway, the striking thing about Americans, especially the middle-aged and older, is that they generally have so little idea about what's going on elsewhere. It's almost as if they think they're living in their own personal Truman Show.

Sometimes it's as if other people or countries don't even really exist, like New Zealand might as well be Narnia or some other fictional place where nothing applies to America.

Yeah it's every man for himself. Unfortunately Americans don't seem to have drawn the connection between that attitude and massive rates of gun crime, homicides, suicides, homelessness, shitty mental health treatment etc.

Americans who have travelled tend to be pretty switched on, in my experience, like anyone else. It's just that few seem to have travelled much outside of the USA.

Very well said. Yes, American media don't even report on international events anymore, unless they involve some war we're currently having.  And the media do this because, as you point out, there is very little demand for the information.  The bellicosity and myopia of the American masses is a very dangerous combination.  I can only imagine what will happen if there is another major attack on the U.S.

And yes, very few American citizens travel abroad, which would open their minds some.  Less than half of the population even own passports.

Just heard that Joe Scarborough was told this morning by one of Trump's foreign policy advisers that Trump has asked three times why we can't use nuclear weapons.  He wonders why we can't use them if we have them.

Wow.

Do we really need to debate whether it's okay to use nuclear weapons?  Really?

There are nightmare scenarios in which they could be used, but from a moral standpoint, I don't think one could ever call it justified.  And Trump's ignorance is ludicrous.  Defending him on this is simply ridiculous and very weak.

Because pop culture and the internet have made Presidential elections, and to a lesser extent, Presidential service little more than a popularity contest where people vote for the most entertaining candidate that doesn't scare them with the truth.

A great President would know that we have some tough decisions to make and that a long-term solution is going to mean shorter-term sacrifice.  The public isn't going to vote for that.  Instead, we're going to elect people who can push the inevitable crash out a bit further in the hopes that we can personally avoid it.  Of course, there is no shortage of politicians happy to oblige that.  After all, a President needs only to delay the shitshow for 8 years tops, and then it's someone else's problem.

Absolutely right on the mark and brilliantly said.

You know that's a disingenuous, smartass answer.  The truth is that the only choice we have is a carefully crafted illusion.  I'm sure you realize that.  If public opinion and policy didn't diverge so significantly, you might have a point.  But government is largely not reined in by the populace -- for purely practical reasons.
