Do they work?
Do they actually cleanse the liver?
Do you shit like a machine for days afterwards?
Did you feel better?
Should I get one of these things?

Milk Thistle. Drink over a bottle of wine every night for the last 20 years. Lab work always shows a good liver. Thanks for reminding me, I'm out of 'em.

All you need to do is water fast for at least 10 days to start healing your body. Supplements may or may not work.

I've been considering fasting lately. I don't think I've ever gone a day without eating in my life... The system could use a break

I have found that just stopping alcohol intake makes me feel normal again. If there is one thing you need to do to help a hurting liver or toxic body feeling, stop smoking/drinking.
supplements to boot can help, but just not treating your body like a garbage dump is 97.5% of it.

You can try doing it in smaller increments first, like 24 hours at a time. Then go to 3 days next. Even before you do that, you can brown rice fast for 3 days to slow your body down. I recently did a 7 day water fast. I cleared a lot of stuff out of my body. It's not for the faint of heart but the benefits are worth it, plus it's something different if you're someone who craves new experiences.

I think specially formulated detox suppliments are a waste of money. Not because they don't work, but because their prices are often absurdly marked up. I think you can get far more bank for your buck if you assemble your own detox regimen by purchasing and (ideally) wildcrafting individual herbal suppliments.
What I would include in an herbal detox regimen:
Milk Thistle --the king herb of liver support. It promotes liver function, protects the liver from damage, and encourages liver regeneration.
Dandelion root --stimulates liver function, stimulates digestion, and is a mild diuretic.
Burdock root --a diuretic, diaphoretic (promotes sweating), and lymphatic (improves circulation and drainage of the lymph system). It also stimulates liver function, digestion, and helps relax and dialate the blood vessels.
Cleavers (Sweet Woodruff) --a powerful lymphatic that helps promote lymphatic secretion, circulation, and drainage.
An adaptogen like ginseng, ashwagandha, or gynostemma pentaphyllum -- adaptogens are general body tonics that support the health and function of all organs and systems

The only one of your links I trust is the Scientific American one, and when I read the full article in the magazine itself, it spoke more of eating less calories some days than not eating for a week. A day of fasting is not a bad thing at all. Seven? I'll pass.

Because they are diet sites and not scientific journals. They can spew whatever unsubstantiated bull they want and it doesn't matter.

Well, I'm basing my opinion from my own experience, which I learned from doing internet research. If you only believe scientific journals and government approved information, it's a narrow minded way of viewing things. I have a strong opinion here because I've actually done it.

Everyday I'm just stuffing my face to the point where sometimes I feel like vomiting. I am lean, have alot of energy and heal fast. Moving water through your body helps get the toxins out. I'm surprised anyone is silly enough to do what your suggesting.

Right, well the info and solutions are out there, it's up to anyone if they want some scarcely known solution to so many body problems caused by modern mainstream western diets.

I'm not saying that intermittent fasting hasn't been shown to be good for health and promote longevity. But there's diminishing returns and eventually it doesn't help you but hurts you.
You need your essential vitamins and nutrients for your body to do what it needs to do and make the neurotransmitters it needs to make. Fasting is one thing, starving yourself is another, and seven days with no food is starving yourself. I don't care if Gandhi did it or not.
I'm also not meaning to be an asshole here. You're entitled to your opinion and you're entitled to fast for as long as you want. Whatever works for you. I just believe that the placebo effect is stronger than most people realize.

Eh, fasting has a lot of health benefits honestly. I wouldn't recommend a 7 day water fast myself, unless you're really experienced with fasting - but if you get a juicer or even a good blender, a juice fast is amazing and is definitely easier and less likely to make you pass out. I don't even get hungry on them, the energy is amazing, and I definitely feel like the benefits are longlasting. I'm probably gonna do one again soon.
It's recommended people see a doctor before they try fasting, which I do think is important for people who may have ailments, or who aren't young and healthy, or confident about fasting in general. But I think most healthy adults can only benefit from juice fasts - as long as it's fresh squeezed and people are actually trying to balance what they're juicing - 7 days of juicing nothing but oranges and bananas(which is the most delicious way to make any orange/banana smoothie that I know of) is really not good, leafy greens are important, and people need to be aware of how much sugar they're ultimately consuming if they're eating a ton of fruit, tomatoes, peas, carrots, etc. etc.
I exercised throughout all the fasts I did and felt great, my skin looked amazing, and I definitely felt like my fitness peaked when I was into juice fasting on a semi-regular basis.
Milk thistle is also a solid suggestion.
