meditation/autosuggestion techniques for breaking habits?

Is it possible for me to hypnotisemyself using a mantra or mp3 recording in order to overcome nicotine addiction? I want to start some kind of meditation practice but I am constantly in withdrawal and can't breathe properly. When I try the traditional method of simply not smoking I get emotional to the point of wanting to hurt myself and then I don't really care about health. It's really pathetic and I don't know what else to do. I feel like I need to stop to be able to relax but I can't stop without relaxing first and everything is freaking me out. Anyone tried something like this? Are there specific meditation techniques? I'm willing to hear other ideas too.

not to sound rude or mean but seriously? you wanna hurt yourself over damned cigarettes? say that out loud to yourself and see if it sounds a little bit absurd. just quit bro, you aint gonna die, just maybe be a dick for a few days. deal with it and move on.

it's not just being a dick for a few days though, it's non-stop weeping for however long until I cave in. I've got other problems and I wanna learn meditation to deal with them but I feel like I have to stop smoking and detox first for reasons stated above...

seriously suck it up, sit down in a quiet place and reflect on your choices. I quit smoking for years when I had an experience of extreme guilt and self loathing about smoking because I simply meditated on the idea and realized it was a selfish dirty thing that pollutes myself and the great mother earth. I smoke cigarettes again now and hate myself for it, I'm in the process of cutting back and will be quitting again soon for life I hope. trust me I know it sucks. cut back your nicotine intake for awhile and limit yourself to a cpl smokes a day, that way the nicotine withdrawal is less severe, what is left is your personal attachment for having a crutch. Realization of this feels crappy and honestly probably should.

You're right, I've stopped before too, so I know it's possible. I guess I'm just getting kind of desperate right now.

Practice breath awareness. When you notice you have a thought about wanting to smoke, focus attention on your breath. Take 3-4 deep breaths and notice your belly rise and fall. With bringing attention to your breath, you bring yourself to the present moment and detach yourself from the thought of wanting a cigarette. This creates a moment of space between you and your habit and allows you to see the thought as a pattern instead of having it take you over.
If it doesn't work the first time you try, forgive yourself and do it again next time you have an urge.
Good luck, you can beat this habit

thats a step in a productive direction, it sucks because think of why you are really quitting and think of why you've been fuckin yourself by not quitting, its not supposed to feel good because it isn't good for you.
I type this with a cigarette burning.

Ok, first off you have become aware of your problem and negative situation. This is a great step forward so be proud of that.
I highly recommend you look on amazon for Buddhist books and others on mediation. (Mindfulness in Plain English, Mindfulness, etc.) You get the idea. Commit to those readings and practice them. If you are feeling negative urges, read a page or two first and see if you still feel the same.
In my experience, this philosophy/Way of living helps bring more awareness into the present moment and helps you understand yourself more. Once your ego and the suffering it causes is explained to you and you meditate and see for yourself. You are able to detach and I personally found it much easier to abstain from selfless desires afterward.
However the battle is a long and difficult one and I wish you the best of luck!

I teach self-hypnosis to my clients after they have experienced somnambulism - the 'working state' of hypnosis. I teach the use of the Chevreul pendulum. I suppose one could learn to use the pendulum to achieve a light hypnotic state without having first been guided by a professional hypnotist, but I am uncertain how suggestible one would become if one hasn't first experienced a deep state. In trance, a suggestion can be given to access that state when one uses the pendulum, which would greatly facilitate one's efforts. Then, when one begins to experience dissociation using the pendulum, one glances at the card one has set up beforehand with a command word or phrase on it. Something short like "Relax," or, "I like homework." If you have propped open that access to the subconscious (the shallower unconscious), the suggestion should go in (but only if you LIKE the suggestion. You cannot be neutral or negative towards it). This practitioner is using the pendulum for suggestibility, but I use it for getting dissociation as I said. When your micro-movements get the pendulum spinning in either direction around the circle (after getting it to move along both axes), and it feels like you're not doing it but that some external force is pulling it around independently of your micro-movements, then you are beginning to get dissociation. That's when you focus on your written suggestion (say, on an index card folded in half like a pup-tent).
