I've been watching a lot of Star Trek on Netflix lately, so I'm wondering if we have any other fans in the house and what your favorite series is.

I wouldn't say fan. But I do watch some of it. Voyagers is hands down my favorite and to date, the only series I've watched in it's entirety. Actually, I "watch" it every night and have for probably the last 5+ years. I can't sleep without noise, so I throw on a few episodes before I lay down. I do this with this particular show because I've seen it so much, there is nothing I've missed. I can just listen to it and know exactly what's going on. There's no random sitting up to see what is happening or anything.
I've watched most of DS9 and TNG. I don't like either a lot. They're just okay. I've seen all the movies from First Contact up.
I also have Renegades sitting on my desktop waiting to be watched.
I also hand built Voyager in Mine craft. Took me a couple of weeks, it was pretty much life sized. No interior or anything, for obvious reasons. Was a pretty fun project.

I agree with you about Voyager and I do the same thing. When I lay down for the night, I pop it on Netflix.
That's really cool how you built Voyager in Minecraft!

It wasn't easy. Voyager is one sexy bitch, she's all curves. Making curves with square blocks is kinda hard

I grew up watching Star Trek with my dad. I've seen it all. Except Deep Space 9. That one is an abomination and should have been burned alive when they had the chance.
The OG series is classic but TNG is thought provoking. I like them both.

DS9 really isn't that bad. I mean, I'm not a huge fan, but it has it's moments. I love the quark-odo conflicts.
Actually I just like Odo in general because I identify with him.

They did go where no man has gone before.
They made a show about space exploration that happens almost entirely in a fixed position.

DS9 has some hammy actors in the station's main crew but a great supporting cast (Garak, all the Ferengi characters, etc) and story arc. I'd say it's my second favorite Star Trek series after TNG. When it was first out I thought it was shit though, wasn't until much later that I gave it a chance again and watched it straight through. DS9 ripped off Babylon 5 a lot I think, another show that's great once you get past some of the corny acting. The CGI exterior shots on that are horrible but some of the costume work is amazing.

It's awesome how Star Trek makes you think...even the original episodes. It seems they always try to push and open up dialogue about society's issues. Like that interracial kiss between Kirk and Uhura. There was that episode in TNG with the J'Nai where they didn't have gender labels.

The original is the one series I haven't been able to watch in its entirety. Just doesn't hold my attention for long enough to sit through an episode most of the time.

I haven't even see a preview for TOS. Will never watch it. I don't like old shit. If it wasn't for Q I'd probably never even watch TNG because it's too old.
I just have this thing about crappy effects. It completely ruins the immersion. I can't look back on something and appreciate it for what it was in it's time. I only have what I've known my entire life to judge it by.
I do watch old shit (yes contradiction) but anything action/sci-fi, just can't do it. I grew up on I Love Lucy, Dick Van Dyke and shit like that and still watch it. But sci-fi shit? Can't really do it pre-90's.

Those craptastic "special effects" are my favorite parts of older TV shows and movies. Like Plan 9 From Outer Space. That movie should get a Lifetime Achievement Award for Hilarious Craptasticness.

They redid all the effects for the blu-ray version of TOS, for good or bad. I have great looking rips of them but I never watch them, I just get too bored. The blu-ray rips of TNG look great too.

I grew up on TNG, but watched Voyager, DS9, and TOS. I didn't watch TOS until after I watched the 2009 reboot though. It didn't hold my interest very long, I think that speaks to some of themes of the era more than the quality of the show.
My favorite series was definitely DS9 though; Quark, Garak, and Judzia Dax being my three favorite characters.
I'm really excited about Star Trek: Anaxar.

Love TNG, and whilst we're on about "old stuff" Also should watch dark star. It's got an arguement with a philosophical bomb which makes it a great story.
FWIW, Data was my hero in TNG.
Voyager could have been so interesting if they stayed to help that human colony. Half the crew wanted to settle. THey could have made a foundation, like foundation and empire, but more optimistic. Instead they just redid TNG, but not as good.
Enterprise had some very good actors but they were crippled by shit writing that no one cared for.
I like DS9, I find the show far more "comfortable" than TNG, and yes, I to like babylon 5 and I'm so pleased to hear there's a new Babylon 5 film coming out, about 20 years on, which I said right at the beginning, i'd love to see.

I've only seen TNG and the TNG movies. I thoroughly enjoyed it though. I thought the special effects were pretty good in the later seasons of TNG. They weren't avatar good but they are better then alot of other crap I've seen in other movies and shows newer then TNG. Before long I ll check out the other series. I haven't heard alot of good things about them but I definitely want to check them out.
I wouldn't mind seeing a movie made about Picard 's days when he was at the Academy. I would like to see what kind of shenanigans that him, Beverly Crusher, and Wesley Crusher's dad got into.

TNG is hands down the best in terms of story and characters. There were the philosophical episodes and existential episodes.
Even when one story arc closes, another opens up. Cardasians, Romulans, Klingons were always antagonizing is one way or another. The result being nothing ever really got stale.
No matter which series you like, the best episodes always involve alternate/opposite universes. Like the Federation become militaristic conquers instead of explorers and diplomats.

I remember when the first episode of TNG aired. I was at my aunt's house and my cousin was glued to the big tube TV shouting at everyone to be quiet and get out of the way. It was a big deal.
As a teenager, I remember the local channel showed DS9 after midnight and I watched the whole series. I enjoyed it as a teenager, but as an adult...meh. I gotta admit that, looking back, my fascination was probably more with Jadzia Dax and Kira Nerys than the show itself.

My first memories of TNG are my grandma ignoring me and locking me out of her bedroom to watch it with her friend
I hated Star Trek for so long after that.

I've seen all of Voyager and TNG and a small amount of TOS and DS9. I find DS9 to be pretty mundane and the special effects on TOS to be prohibitively terrible. There are definitely some way out there TNG episodes--especially in the early seasons but then it gets into its groove of go to planet x, oehs noes solution isn't working, solve the problem, ep over formula. I do think though that TNG has by far the best characters. Warf, Data, Picard, LaForge, Riker... what a fucking cast. That said, Voyager has a consistently good story and 7 of 9 is fucking smoking. I was consistently sucked into Voyager... the other series... not so much.

I agree with all that and that episode with the time warp making the enterprise a military vessel is probably my favorite episode. That episode even lead to another one that involved Natasha yar which I thought was cool.

Finally watched it. Acting was pretty terrible (and if I can say something has terrible acting, it really is terrible, I'm not usually able to pick up on the slightly crappy acting or shortcomings) but it was okay. I mean it's not a big budget film, so of course it's not going to be gorgeous eye candy or anything. If you've found yourself watching a lot of Star Trek, I'd say watch it just to say you have, but don't expect to get a lot out of it.

Yeah that one with Yar's half-Romulan daughter was pretty cool.
Enterprise usually doesn't get too much love but I kind of liked it. Had a lot of potential but then so much time was devoted to dull story arcs about alien races you never hear anything about in the other shows.

I was never really a trekkie, but last year I was watching a lot of sci-fi, so my girlfriend recommended I check out TNG, after we went to see "Into Darkness" at the theater. So I checked it out... took me a while to warm up to it, but I've been slowly making my way through the series ever since.

That's a weird coincidence. I'm similar to you (with the sleep / noise thing) and I used TNG to fall asleep for much of the last year. Girlfriend called it "Trekquil."
Used Law and Order for a while. That one's not too bad. lol Or, like you said, anything you've seen a million times.

Why do you need noise to sleep?
Mine is for 2 reasons.. There are a lot of repetitive noises in my house, and repetitive noises drive me nuts (trying to sleep or not). My A/C makes a noise that sounds exactly like a dripping faucet into a bowl of water.. (Not the only one that bugs me, just an example) Every single drip is more annoying than the last, there is no platuea, it just keeps getting more annoying and keeping my focus ever better. Eventually I can't even think about sleep, I'm just listening for the next one whether I want to focus on it or not.
The other is tinnitus. Something has to drown that shit out. It irritates me faster than the noises.

That's really exciting news! It looks like you have to subscribe to some special CBS services, though.

Largely habit, probably. But it started (and kinda perpetuates) because I have the kind of brain that won't leave me the fuck alone, sometimes. Even drugged, my mind can start to dredge up shit that will stress me out, as I'm trying to sleep. In those situations it's just easier to halfway-focus on something else.

Not if you're a pirate.

With my face against the floor I can’t see who knocked me out of the way. I don’t want to get back up but I have to so it might as well be today. Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear. I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear. You can't wake up, this is not a dream. You're part of a machine, you are not a human being With your face all made up, living on a screen. Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline

Yeah I can't sit through too much of the old stuff(except the movies). TNG is my favorite series as well.

I'm a Trekky through and through for quite some. I remember that toon series from when I was a kid. I love 'em all but I picked DS9 because it had some great characters.

I always thought DS9 was so shit when it was first airing, but when I came back to it as an adult I enjoyed it a lot more. A few actors in the main crew are kind of hammy but there are tons of awesome recurring characters.
Bablyon 5 is another good show that DS9 supposedly ripped off. Similar casting weaknesses in the station crew and the CGI exterior shots are really shitty, but great story arc and supporting characters. Also some of the costume work is really good.

I remember watching DS9 on the local station after midnight on Saturdays as a kid. I was fascinated with Dax and Kira Nerys. Many years later, I figured out that it wasn't so much the show as the ladies in it. I watch it on Netflix from time to time now.
I wish they would make more stuff with the Borg in it. Those Borg are pretty badass.
