walmart straw

So I bought a bale of straw from Wal-Mart.

They have it as a decorative item for the fall I guess. I only bought one, but I'm sure they'll have them on sale as soon as we're done with Halloween! I Remember they did that last year, they were half off I believe.
Anyways, it's my first time working with straw and am going to be growing golden oysters. I'm thinking about doing an outdoor grow since it is September and we've been getting good rain around here. I already have 3 quarts of fully colonized wbs.
I was just wondering if anyone else has had success using this straw. I also noticed some black spots on some of the straw.
Is this normal? Can I still use this straw or should I go exchange it?

that is straw all right. i wouldn't worry about a few spots on it. if it's moldy throughout then it would be a problem. usually that's bales that were bailed wet or rained on. i actually know a farmer that uses the leftover straw from that mini bail factory. apparently the mini bale business is half a million dollars a year!

Lucky you! I can't find straw here in south Texas, only hay. Anyways, suppose it does have a lot of mold spots, is pasteurization enough to kill the spores?

yeah honestly cold pasteurizing could even work with a high enough inoculation rate, your log should be fully colonized in a week. so it's not even about killing all of the spores, just giving the desired mycelium a head start.

Have you tried using the hay? Man, I honestly think I read somewhere that it is a desirable substrate

I've read that hay is very prone to contamination due to the grains in it. I haven't bothered to try using it.

Yeah, the size is a problem. Do you have to sterilize the cotton seed hulls, or just pasteurize? I don't have a local source for those. I'm in straw country. Which is good in one way.

no i just cold pasteurize and mix with straw or wood pellets to keep it from going anaerobic. i'm biased against straw btw. very allergic and it's super messy. but it's no doubt a great substrate.
