Baby's First Grow Log, PF tek(PES Amazonians)
    #22192111 - 09/05/15 10:35 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Hey guys. This is my first post. Please enjoy the following ficticiously fictitious work of fiction that is entirely fictional. .___.

So I've never even tripped before. I've taken LSD once but it was too small of a dose to do anything but induce some mild visuals.

I decided to grow some mushrooms after having done a lot of reading(probably not by the standards here) on psychadelics and developing a fascination with ayahuasca specifically. That led to listening to a bunch of lectures by Terence McKenna, Paul Stamets, Graham Hancock, etc. which further sparked my interest; now here I am .

I've written a bit in a grow log already so I'll go ahead and post what I have so far. I'll try to be detailed in the hopes that future growers might get some use out of this. Critiques are very much appreciated.

8/20/15

1/4 cup BRF, 2/3 cup verm., 1/4 cup water used per 1/2 pint jar(I made the mistake of getting tall 1/2 pint jars not knowing the bottoms wouldn't likely colonize before pinning; I'm considering trying to grow some liquid culture to speed the process though I don't know if it would be harmful to mix the different types of mycelium.)

The verm. and BRF used were put on a baking pan and sterilized in an oven at 300 degrees for 20 minutes. The water used was boiled for 20 minutes. The brown rice flour used was home-made; I was unable to completely grind all of the rice into flour(in spite of going through about 4 cycles) and as such there were pieces of solid rice in the flour(though no bigger than 1/4 of a piece); I was worried about this but later found that some teks use whole or even cooked rice so I'm guessing it's not an issue.

I mixed all the ingredients at once though I would add the BRF last if I were to do it again.

First 6 jars left loose(packed by gravity). Last six packed very tightly(I now know this to be a mistake but it was done to delay their colonization so that I wouldn't run out of terrarium room). Disposable rubber gloves were worn(fresh ones were used for pretty much the whole process; I would change gloves between tasks and frequently wash them with alcohol); insides of jars and bottoms of lids were wiped with a paper towel soaked in 91% isopropyl alcohol(new one each time)before
substrate was added.

Lids were immediately placed back on jars(though not screwed on) after substrate was added to minimize air exposure.

Gloves were washed with alcohol before and after packing each jar in an effort to avoid cross contamination(this might have been excessive as I was going to pressure cook them anyway).

Rims of the jars were sterilized with isopropyl alcohol leaving half an inch of space between the top of the jars and the substrate. I did this twice; making sure the glass was spotless.

New vermiculite was sterilized(same method as before) and placed in a half-inch layer above substrate.

It was pretty late at this point so I decided to go to bed and sterilize the jars in the pressure cooker in the morning.

8/21/15

Pressure cooker was washed with soap. Five of the loosely packed jars were placed inside on the rack; cold water was filled to roughly 1 in. from the bottom of the pot. 2 washcloths were folded and used as spares around the inner perimeter of the cooker to keep the jars from touching the walls.

I don't know if the pressure cooker at my house runs at 10 or 15 psi; efforts to find a manual online and in person weren't successful. The pressure cooker was heated on an electric stove at around 2/3 the highest setting until the weight began to rock. Heat was then reduced to about 40% and the jars left to sterilize for 45 minutes. Each jar was double-wrapped in aluminum foil beforehand to avoid moisture buildup.

The pressure cooker was not opened until after it had cooled naturally. I think it was around 5 hours later that I opened it; it was cool to the touch.

A commercial 12cc syringe was used to inoculate jars 1-5(1cc per jar, 4 injection ports per jar; with a couple exceptions I'll get to later)with the needle touching the glass on the sides of the jars.(amazonians were chosen based on a recommendation that they were more tolerant to various temperatures and therefore more forgiving to the first time grower)

The syringe wasn't flame sterilized between jars nor was it shaken between jars(though it was shaken thoroughly before the inoculation of jars 1-5 and then 6-12; though 6 and 12 weren't inoculated as I'd wanted to save them). I didn't do these things because I'm a noob and my senpai will never notice me.

I accidentally inoculated jar 1 with a full cc of solution at one port(plunger slipped); jar 5 may have been inoculated unevenly(though a full cc was still used) because I lost track of which holes I had already inoculated after investigating a sound to make sure no one was awake(I was kind of paranoid); the ports on each jar were labelled after this to prevent further confusion.

5 of the more tightly packed jars(this was all the pressure cooker would hold) were sterilized in the same manner as the previous jars. Jars 6 and 12 were not inoculated as I wanted to save them along with my last 2 ccs of solution in case there were a lot of contaminated jars on the first go.

8/26/15

No signs of colonization from any of the jars. The last two jars(6 and 12) began to smell odd after a few days(in spite of being sterilized) so I dumped them(I didn't know at the time that you gradually lose sterility over time). There wasn't any visible contamination but I'm somewhat worried. I didn't know that disposing of contaminated jars in an incorrect manner can release spores everywhere so I'd just kind of dumped them into the trash, rinsed them out and put them on my bookshelf. I still have my last 2ccs of solution.

8/27/15

Jars 1 and 11 are showing signs of colonization! I'm really excited . Tiny pea-sized white areas are present in both(each has only one). I'm unsure as to whether or not 3 of my jars are safe and uncontaminated. I've moved them to another drawer(I'm just keeping them in a dresser) though I don't know if it matters.

They have rusty brown patches which I think may be the brown rice flour growing rancid. I wish I had broken up the clumps a bit more and added the rice flour last. Hopefully I'll at least be able to grow enough to trip and make a spore print(not at the same time ) so that I can try again if this fails.

I ate some HBWR seeds and experienced very mild visuals and not so mild groin pain(probably due to the vasoconstriction); stretching helped with this. Thought process was noticeably altered; it seemed like sexual inhibitions would've been lessened had I been around people.

8/28/15

Jars 8 and 11 are showing multiple new patches of mycelium. Things are looking more hopeful . I'm surprised that the more tightly packed jars seem to be colonizing more quickly than the looser ones. Perhaps they'll speed up later. I've moved 4 jars away from the rest now for observation. They smell different than the others and a few have small patches of brown on them. I'll probably have to ask online about this(pretty much why I came here ).

Jars 4, 9, and 10 are the ones I'm mainly worried over. I had dropped my needle between inoculating 9 and 10 and had flame sterilized it but I hadn't squirted solution out of the needle before inoculating. Jar 5 showing no signs of anything.

And that pretty much brings us up to the present. I'll post some pics with multiple views. I'm less worried about the jars showing the rusty patches now as the mycelium seems to be eating it but I still want to get your opinions on whether or not I should keep them. The patches haven't been growing since I first noticed them on the 27th. I didn't find anything that looked like what I had when I searched for common contaminations so I'm not even positive that it's bad but they did smell weird(though I suppose I don't really have a baseline for what these jars are supposed to smell like). Jar 5 still isn't showing any signs of growth so it's probably a dud but if the jars I'm worried about colonize and everything goes as planned I'll have a 9/10 success rate .

Also I'm wondering if it's a good idea to grow some liquid culture to try and help the mycelium reach the bottoms of the jars before pinning.

Sorry for writing a novel.

So I built an SGFC, I've been misting and fanning at least 3 times a day. Sterilized the perlite and verm before using both, dunked for roughly 24 hours before roll. I'm only fruiting the first 3 right now and I'm giving the other jars time to consolidate.

I've been running a 12 hour on and off cycle with a daylight bulb in my closet. I have a cool mist humidifier in there as well placed on a low setting(maybe 15%). I live in a very dry climate so I usually keep the closet door closed so the humidity is a bit higher. I'm not sure if this interferes with the SGFC's fresh air exchange though.

I was kind of worried at the heads of the pins. Do these pins look alright to you guys? I had read that cracks can indicate infections though I don't know if this is just the mycellium breaking.

pics were taken right after misting

Nah man. Those caps look fine! They'll probably grow out normally.

I'm a dumbass :frown: I noticed that the perlite was getting pretty dry so I took the cakes out, put the SGFC in my bathtub and ran the shower over it for a bit. In the process of putting the cakes back I almost dropped one of the and had to catch it causing some bruising :/

These black specs in the first pic were on the base of these mushrooms before this happened. Should I be worried about these?

I think those black specs are just verm. If they are mold you'll notice they grow pretty fast. I think you're all good buddy  :goodluck:
