Dishwasher Disinfection

I just saw a show on the food network that made me start thinking. On this show they showed how you take fish, season them however you choose, add a little liquid, wrap them in foil and put them in the dishwasher! You run them through on the highest setting for 2 full cycles and wala they come out perfectly steamed. My question is what if you took 1/2 pint pf jars and set them up exactly like you do for the pressure cooker, and you put them in the dishwasher on high for 4 or 5 cycles or more. Would this be enough to steralize the jars? I think i am going to try 1 or 2 jars this way just for experiments sake next time i do a baatch but what do you think?

I took a digital meat thermometer i had and wrapped the top part, the digital part in 3 layers of foil to protect it and set it in my dishwasher.it just finished its third time thru on high heat and when i opened the dishwasher and grabbed it it read 190 degrees. Now keep in mind it took me about 20 seconds to get the foil off so my guess is it was about 200 degrees when i took it out. Also i only tried with 3 times in a row because my meat thermometer wasnt meant to do that and i dont want to ruin it.

sit sounds like it would at least sterlize them as well as you can with just a big pot,if you dont have a PC.I would run it more though maybe 6 or 7 times then let it sit overnight before you ofen it,just like a pressure cooker or pot.Would doing that, getting the dishwasher SO hot harm the dishwasher?

agreed, the toughest of contams would be able to survive in an environment of a dishwasher, there's noway those things are even close to sterile.

Are you taking about running the dishwasher multiple times to achieve that high temperature? Or are you thinking about doing fractional sterilization? Fractional sterilization seems like it could be promising, thats just a lot of dishwasher cycles!

Either way but yes thats what i mean.Like i posted i tested it last night a little. After 3 dishwasher cycles in a row the temp inside the dish washer was between 190-200 degrees.im saying what if i did the same thing but ran it through 6 times.I understand that even though it is going to be hotter than the 200 i got after 3 times that theres a point at which the limit will be reached, but even if it raised to 220 degrees thats the same as boiling them in a pot, isnt it.Or would it at least be good wnough to steralize supplies, verm, tools, ect? After all if after 2 cycles you are able to raise the internal temp of the fish up to 165 pf jars shouldnt be hard if the dishwasher gets hotter.Or what about Bags?Just a thought im going to do 4 jars tonight this way,BRF,verm normal pf 1/2 pints. ill keep you posted

Well tonight i tried it.I prepared 4 1/2 pint PF jars with brf/verm with verm barrier and then before i put them in the dishwasher i ran it through 1 cycle with a sanitizing powder we have to clean it on a reg basis.I then placed the jars in there seeled up with foil just like you normaly would.I fastened them onto the rack with zipties and ran them through 8 cycles in the dishwasher 0n the highesst setting.I am going to leave them in there untill tom afternoon then innoculate with an EQ syringe I have.Everything is extra so i have nothing to lose so who knows? With me and shrooms i like to have low hopes then if it works in your fever its that much better.

So far so good!(1) of the 4 jars has a spot of mycelium about the size of a dime, nothing on the others yet,but no sign of contams yet either.Well its only been about 50 hours so to be honest its way to early to say what will happen. They are all in my incubator though at 85 degrees so well see.

Well 2 jars are about 80-90% colonized, look good.1 Jar was about 50% colonized then stalled out and now shows green mold, and i had to throw 1 jar away in the begining. So it looks like i dot a 50% sucess rate.Next time im going to do 3 jars in dishwasher but 10 cycles and 3 jars in a pot on the stove, this way i can compare the results.I do have to say that although 50% isnt that great, its alotbetter than the doubters thought,i bet.im still working on camera for pics.My buddy is suppose to come over soon and bring his, hopefully soon because im casing soon.
