Filter box grower noob

Hello Shroomery,
A friend recently has been utilizing this method of growing over the PF tek because his SGFC is too small and he hates to look after all the small jars.
https://www.dmt-nexus.me/forum/default.aspx?g=posts&t=40988

So everything goes well, He has the 1 litre filter boxes with the inocculation holes. He fills them with substrate and the verm layer, sterilizes them, and innoculizes them. Up until this point everything has been smooth also previous time He has attempted it.

However what went wrong previous time is that the box already started pinning and the fruits already started to grow without the whole box being colonized, He  doesn't know how to prevent this. Should he wrap the whole thing in ductape, like withthe poorly wrapped filter box in the picture?

The other thing that bugs him is that it could have been previous time that some part of the substrate for some reason could not be colonized, what should he do in such a scenario? take the whole substrate out of the filter box, remove the uncolonized stuff and put it back? Because he can't reach the fruits either that pinned on the side of the box if he doesn't get it out.

In short it goes wrong the moment it starts colonizing, either the fruits already appear on the side and/or some part of the substrate remains uncolonized

Looking forward to what you guys think about it:)
Thank you for helping me:)

Premature pinning is a sign of contamination.

So normally a 1 l filter box should achieve 100% colonization without pinning? Then that would solve my problem:), is it handy though to ducttape the sides of a filter box so pinning mainly happens at the top? and is a verm layer still a good idea? because the box has a filter, the holes are ducttaped over after inoculation and I don't know if pins would be able to form at the top if the verm does not permit enough sunlight coming through...
Thanks for your reply:)

you abandoned a tried-and-true tek for some other gimmick, simply because you didn't like the look of the cakes in the sgfc?

Sorry, but I cannot understand that logic. Seems like a dumb as fuck reason to do something. PF-tek is the best for newbs. I'd say thats your first mistake - not trusting the best beginner tek there is. That container is way too large for brf. there is a reason we do small jars with brf....

the tek you followed is shit. do the pf-tek and you will have better success.

No, tape on the sides will not prevent side pinning. The only real way to prevent side pinning is with the use of a liner. This guarantees you will only have top pins. Pins are formed by slow moisture evaporation from the substrate's surface.

A few years ago I was still lining my tubs with tape on the outside and not using liners  I would get gnarly side pins. I did a little bit of a verm casing to help with getting top side pins and IME it helped out A LOT. I just sprinkled enough verm over the top of the sub and lightly misted the verm to give it enough moisture. This provided enough of a micro climate on the top side for pinning to occur. Still got an insane amount of side pins, but got a pretty decent top side canopy as well.

IMO, a box that big should not be inoculated from spore, that's calling for problems.
It could certainly work with a clean LC.

Learn to enjoy looking after all the small jars, if you want shrooms.
