From cakes to Casing - a few questions
    #22190853 - 09/04/15 11:05 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I'm going to do the 50/50 casing tek in the next week or so.  It's my first time to do anything besides the PF-tek.  I got 30 jars incubating right now.  20 of them will be ready by next weekend.  They're just about fully colonized right now, so I'll give them a week and then pop them out.  I've done the PF-Tek plenty of times and had success with that.  I'm going to take 10 of the cakes and put them in a SGFC and then the other 10 I will apply a casing layer as described in the 50/50 casing Tek.

After reviewing the info on the general cultivation page, I still feel a bit unsure about a few things.  Here are my questions:

1. A SGFC is generally for cakes.  I wouldn't use it for the cakes I will apply a casing layer to.  Is that right?

2. If I'm right about the above statement, what kind of fruiting chamber is recommended for casings?  I like the monotub, but I'm only doing 10 cakes and I don't think that will cover the bottom of a monotub.  So maybe I should do something else instead.  I need to figure this out soon so I can build the fruiting chamber.  I would prefer something simple.

3. How do you get FAE in a monotub?  To me it doesn't seem that those holes filled with polyfill is enough for FAE.

4. I watched RR's casing video.  In the video he pulls out a tray of colonized substrate covered in tinfoil.  I'm not sure, but it looks like it had been sitting somewhere before he applied the casing.  I can pop my cakes out of the jars and apply the casing immediately, right?

5. The 50/50 casing Tek says "We recommend cutting out any uncolonized part of the cake/substrate first. What you'll have left is 100% colonized substrate."  It also says "Then take fresh cakes from the jars, cut them like a cucumber into slices about 2-3" thick, or for best results leave them whole."  If there is any uncolonized part of the cake, it's probably in the center.  If I leave the cakes whole, I can't be sure there is any uncolonized part of the cake.  Should I cut them up just to be sure?  Looking at my jars right now, it's almost fully colonized on the outside.  I assume by next weekend it will be fully colonized.
