so here in the Puget sound I thought things were just kicking off, but turns out I was bout a week late on the first flush of my oyster log.
Mr slug was happy as ever though.

Last shot is just a tree that was recently dropped down the trail a ways, I rubbed the few good looking ones all over the log and left a few on top.

So I found a ton yesterday, and as I'm very new to this I am concerned with look-alikes and whatnot. So while reading more as I considered taking some home I read that you should avoid taking them from fallen logs, since the look-alikes prefer logs to living trees while oysters prefer living trees. If this is wrong, please correct me as I will gladly go harvest the enormous amount I found! Looks great btw.

So this log was a tree a few years back, then some wind changed its state of nature. I used to have to use a pole saw to knock em off.
so I've noticed that the whitish tan flatter ones like dying Alder trees and the few years after the tree falls they fruit pretty well.
The grey long ones I've only ever found in nature on healthier looking trees and logs from them that were cut that year. But after that the logs always disappear, so can't say what happens. I'd bet they do the same. They grow those for stores I'm sure they'll grow on anything. I've heard even corn cobs.
Best bet is to post em for confirmation. Also smell them. Rip one open it should be tough and stringy and it reeks like seafood!

Well I checked them today.....they are dunzo. But we will see if the next rain brings them back on the same stump. I don't see why they shouldn't fruit a few times here in the fall.....?
Do you have any idea if it is in the Pleurotus genus?

Are there oyster mushrooms that aren't in the Pleurotus genus?

Very nice oyster finds everyone.
Pro Tip: Remove the base of the stipe and use the stem butts to spread oyster mycelium, plant the stem butts in crevices on downed trees.

There are multiple kinds of oyster mushrooms that fall into different genus'. So it seems to me anyways. I think this thread was made for edible oysters, the most popular one being Pleurotus ostreatus. They don't grow in the PNW.
Pleurotus pulmonarius grows in the PNW and apparently tastes exactly like ostreatus.

I started it for any pnw oyster finds. Anything considered to be an oyster is cool. I generally find pleurotus pulmonarius growing in the wild. You can usually expect to only find those in the pnw. Smell more fishy and are generally lighter color and almost no stem.
But in the last few years I've found some what I believe to be ostreatus in city parks in Kirkland. I think that's what they were they're usually dark gray brown, have more of a stem, and smell sweeter.
I'd guess they escaped someone's home grow, or a grocery store.
I'll try and find em again this year

Fryersquest I'd say your pics are of pleurotus pulmonarius or something close.

P. Ostreatus may not grow in PNW naturally but they can, I grew some outside in SoCal...in the summer...basically in a desert...when the temp was 80 at night and 100 during the day. PNW has way better growing conditions I think, so it makes sense that there could be spores or outdoor propagation. But I agree that another species of Pleurotus is more likely.
