Four days ago I bought some nice clay pots.I replanted ten of my san pedro and bridgesii.also bought new soil mix so I went ahead and freed all the roots up getting all the old soil out.a couple were root bound I was careful not to break any big roots.my question is should I not have broke the root ball up getting all the soil out?a couple were in the same pot so i had no choice.should I have let them dry and heal in the sun before putting them in the new cactus mix soil?ive had these guys for a while now,got them this year just wanted to get them out of the cheap potting soil and ugly plastic pots they were in.I had to steak a couple of the taller ones because I didn't want to plant them any deeper than they were and they were top heavy.any and all opinions and advice will be appreciated.

take them all back out of the soil, leave them to dry in a warm shaded area...give it about a week to be sure. Then you can replant in dry soil. Give it another 1-2 weeks before watering.

I let my soil dry beforehand.covering the roots lightly not packing down and used a steak and some rope to keep them up right.I will pull them first thing in the a.m if you think its my only choice.I looked in the forums for anything related with no luck.you have experience with this or know someone that had complications from what I did?

no matter what, when you separate a rootball, capillary roots get busted. Moisture on these wounds can cause total rot of the root system and base of the cactus, and cause total loss if not caught immediately. When I say dry, I mean dry. If you didn't turn the soil in the sun until it is dry all the way through, there will be moisture. That moisture can kill.
I personally think that you should consider pulling them up gently and letting those ripped roots heal.

Additionally, most steaks usually contain alot of moisture and anyways I think cacti are more the beef jerky type than actual steak...

You can also get lucky. Prior to knowing better I reported 3 rootbound cacti in the same fashion without resting them. I watered 1 week later. In mid winter. I know better now, but those 3 cacti are healthy and showing new growth already. But it's pretty mild winters here, full sun every day and under eaves out of rain.
Good luck to you mate

I did not know this either. I repotted some half year old seedlings. They seem to be doing alright. Growth is still not noticeable.
