Exercise and immersing myself in hobbies are two things which have helped me stay sober from heroin and nicotine.

Really cycling saved my life.

Also, you are who your friends are.  If your friends are heavily into substances and you're trying to be sober, then you're fucked mate.

You need to surround yourself with people that have similar goals in life.

Well I don't have to worry about friends. I don't have many, and those I have are good people.

It's the hobbies I need. There's only so much reading I can do in a day...

addiction has been a bitch in the past for me adter six years of trying to stop substances I have managed to stray away for 5 months now

i am pretty isolated
i don't get much out of aa meetings and haven't been to thrilled to meet people their or work the steps

as far as boredom goes stumbleupon, audiobooks, nature walks, video games, making money online, youtube have been my go tos

its a definitely different but substances did not get me to where I want to be even though i am not even entirely sure where that is

Dude, you have no idea how much I hate exercise and everything that comes with it. I keep in shape by walking and controling what I eat.

I tried the gym and I just can't... I get bored out of my fucking mind. My brain isnt engaged in anything other than trying the flex a damm muscle. Boredom is my biggest enemy.  It will drive my to the liquor store faster than anything  else. I like watching sports, but not doing them. I hate sweating and feeling exhausted and the muscle pain... I don't know why people say its amazing and endorphine and feel good type of shit. It's not true. Plus I have no use for muscle. They are to expensive to build and they require too much attention otherwise they pout and decide to go away.. Needy motherfuckers these muscles man...

I used to be a cocaine & xanax addict. The addictions coincided each other. For about two and a half years I'd say. I'd pop a few bars and buy coke daily -- and not just fucking twenty bags.

My full paychecks were going to the habits. I mean I was fucking working solely to support my addictions at that point. And then I eventually lost jobs (plural), severely damaged relationships, and even stole from family when I was broke. I was scum, basically.

It took being faced with eviction, and being fucking homeless, before finally making the decision to quit. I cut ties with a dude I was pretty tight with -- because he was a coke dealer. I went cold turkey on the bars and went through an absolutely hellish, seemingly month plus long withdrawal period.

That was 8 years ago. Now the only substances that I partake in are psychedelics. That's it. Oh, and I enjoy drinking once a week. My cocaine & benzo days however are now a distant memory, thankfully.

Screw you for having been an asshole in the past, but congratulation for kicking the habit...

Do you still crave it after all these years or has your brain finally come to terms with it?

Thanks, Pat. I owned up to it for what it's worth. Told the people that I hurt straight to their face what I did, why I did it, and didn't make any excuses.

The Xanax I have zero cravings for anymore, and the only time I would/could conceivably have cravings for coke is if I'm drinking and around someone who is doing it. And I don't put myself in that situation. Shit I have old friends (and a cousin too) who still do coke regularly, and sadly I just have to avoid them.

Being around it isn't good for me. But outside of that I don't have coke cravings anymore. The first few years though, I did. But it doesn't even cross my mind anymore.

I am in Western Canada and can go to the city and find meth in five minutes without even having a source. People literally come up to you and offer to sell you some.

Hey

I know what you are feeling. I was addicted to amphetamines, severly, for around a year and a half. About the middle of 2012 to the end of 2013, give or take a few months.

I remember once i got in a arguement with my ex gf (fucking whore) after staying up several days and went into a brief period of psychosis. I knew it was time to stop because i had a knife to my throat and WANTED death, but came to an agreement with myself to wait until i was sober then kill myself. I realized how insane it was the next day, after getting some sleep.

Worst part of my addiction i was using atleast 200 something mg vyvanse-120-150 (or what ever 2 and a half 60s are) adderall a day.

Smoked meth a few times, quit the shit before i moved on to meth completely.

I remember feeling no pleasure in anything for a few months after quitting. I remember feeling like i had no energy, no concentration, the intense cravings. General anger, anxiety, shittyness, body aches, etc.

It does get better. Marijuana helped a LOT.

I truely believe i got off easy because i was only addicted to amphetamine, which IMO is nothing compared to benzos/opiates.

I still dont feel like im the same person i was before the addiction. Im glad i quit before something terrible happened.

Get a part time job. I'd say you dont need more hobbies you need something to make your current hobbies meaningful. So work not for the money but because it create a balance in your life. The few hobbies you take pleasure in become a lot more fun when you only have certain days/times to commit to it. Coming home after work gives your brain something to feel good about, instead of same old, same old.

It's waaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too slippery of a slope of strictly define "sober" without strictly defining "drugs."
For example, at an AA meeting you'll find people smoking cigarettes/e-cigs and drinking coffee/energy drinks like it's going out of style.  Nicotine and caffeine are definitely drugs.  Does that mean those people aren't sober?

For me, I smoke weed every day.  I'll once or twice a year get some really good cocaine and do it over the course of a night with a few friends.  A few times a year I trip acid or shrooms.  Other than that my drug use practically zero.  I took MDMA on my birthday this year for the first time in 5 years or so and it was amazing.  I take Xanax that I keep around on the comedown of coke or psychs just for the ease of sleep.  None of these drugs has ever really done me wrong.

That said, I cannot go near amphetamines or alcohol.  Alcohol was a bitch, and consumed me for a while.  I went to rehab, did the AA thing, got through all that and I haven't touched a drop of alcohol in years now.  It's not always easy.  But when I say I'm sober, it's how I define it based on what I just typed above.  For me, sobriety relates to problem substances and non-problem substances because "drug" is just too difficult to clearly define.

Nobody is truly sober. Everyone is prescribed a drug or at least drinks caffeine.

I have been addicted to weed (and tobacco) for 8 years. Sure its not IV heroin or anything but if fucked me up pretty good mentally.

When I quit almost seven years ago I filled the void with yoga and psychedelics.

I stayed completely clear for years but now I occasionally bake some space cake and I still cant handle that like a normal person. I take one piece, and I MUST have it again the next day, and the next, and the next until the thing is gone. What do I do when I am stoned? Watch series and fucking shows about gold miners

My life is filled with great things like a family and an awesome job. But I still have cravings for that period when I cared about nothing but getting high. Life was simple then. Empty but so blissfully simple.

So I am sober most of the time, life is good. I dont think I will ever be completely free from it though
