I've got some cardboard stem butt tries going too. But now that I've done some reading up on things I doubt I'll try that again. There's a problem with it: corrugated cardboard (and grocery bags) are made from Kraft-process paper. The Kraft process removes most lignin from pulp because this makes the paper stronger. But lignin is exactly what wood-lovers need!
I'm going to do some stem-butt experiments on newsprint. Newsprint is pulped mechanically, not by the Kraft process, so it retains most of the original lignin. If I learn anything worth knowing, I will post about it in Cultivation. Maybe I'll post anyway.

It doesn't matter and the mushrooms don't care. At all. Observably. They'll tear that stuff up anyway and you can watch it happen any time you like.

That's as may be, but there's nothing to lose by doing the experiment to see what happens.

An experiment presupposes you don't already have a conclusion. It sounds like you do, or at least a clear bias. Just be wary of confirmation bias. It's not an experiment without rigid integrity and it's not a good experiment without controls.
And have fun. It's not science if you don't enjoy it because who doesn't love science?

Cyan mycelium loves corrugated cardboard. I've got some absolutely covered in it right now.

I've seen a lot of people do it. I've seen the mushrooms do it with litter without deliberate intervention. That's the only part of this discussion not in doubt.

Finally found some Portland cyans today. From the looks of it things are starting to pick up around here. This isn't a very big spot, but that's not really what I was hoping for. I enjoy small, discreet spots like this because I can leave them alone and let them do their thing without having to worry about anyone molesting the patch. I'd like to thank all of you Willamette valley/ pdx hunters for the encouragement. I almost started to think I might not find any cyans this year, but all of you guys posting your finds has really kept me motivated to keep hunting the good hunt.

I phrased things more strongly than warranted. I apologize for that. I didn't so much have a presupposed conclusion as a fact that makes me question the usual cardboard advice. I still feel that that's worth investigating (and if nobody agrees, that's fine). And yeah, experimenting and modifying is what makes things fun for me... in the kitchen I almost never follow a recipe closely, for the same reason!
As for experiment design: I was thinking to start two stem butt cultures each on corrugated cardboard, newsprint, and also brown grocery sack paper (to control for the surface area question), in otherwise the same environment, and take progress photos along the way. Suggestions for improvement welcome.
I'm sorry also to have derailed the thread for a bit. On with the finds!
I actually found a new patch today myself, thanks to NeoSporen's very helpful Google Earth tutorial. Pics later, if I can.

How are Pellys out now? Around Kitsap peninsula it has to frost a little first. I'll check my spots tomorrow.

Raven: the shrubs in the last two pictures are alder. It's not clear to me whether the shrub in the fourth picture is the same.

Damn joust jelly on the pelly. Acb and I are checking in the morning!
Beta and I found some cool stuff today. One of our best new spots got discovered so we were lil bummed, but then hit a dozen parks in king county with 100% success! every park we stopped at we found at least some. They literally grow like weeds out here...
Couple of the best pics of the day.

One spot had so many pins in a row I got to make another pinorama

The coolest find of the day though was a pot with some chives and chips in it growing cyans too! The pot was in a huge patch but these are in the pot and the pot is now on my porch. Hah actually we forgot it was on my roof and drove prolly 25 blocks with a planter on top, dumping spores at speeds it's never imagined. Then it fell off... went back and got it. It's still good just a lil dirty.

Today's pics all turned out blurry. These were the best two. Cyans found today in a habitat restoration area, in a suburban park east of Seattle.

I been reading all over, haven't been able to find much, so new to this not sure where to begin, but I did just read the forum rule for this and found out I don't think I'm allowed to ask where to get any so I'm probably going to grow them myself
