I started by doing pattern recognition with species I should ignore. Indicator species and lookalikes was time well spent.
I put in at least 8 hours a day for coming up on 2 months now, quizzing myself and having the wife quiz me too.
This is the actives thread tho; people don't generally like extensive discussion here even though "images only" now exists. I would suggest reading the Related Threads within Related Threads back ten years, using the search engine and start looking for the multiple stages of growth.
There are also time lapse growth videos on YouTube.
(Sorry for off topic in actives thread I'm just trying to help.)

indicator species is very helpful. Habitat is the main factor when your on the hunt. Substrate, vegetation, location.Man influenced,Indicator species. All need to be mentally noted. What appears the same is usually quite different. It's the make up of the habitat to the smallest details. With out this site most people search for several years before a find. I promise. Once you no. You no. Keep at it.

Indicator species haven't been all too helpful for me.. I've found psathyrella conopilus,Leratiomyces ceres, and Mycena alcalina being the most obvious species growing around my cyan patches, but I've found those growing in wood chips with no.actives close by :/

Habitat found me both my libs and azures. Solid advice thank you for elucidation. And seriously, following my nose found me an awesome bioluminescent "parasitic" mushroom in an odd classification. Could smell it over the dead wood. I scan to the right on my way in, on my way out, sometimes I'll check my six or stand on tiptoes for different vantage points. Surprisingly, binoculars help, not just for "bird watching" when you get stopped. Also check game trails. People will just pick anything sometimes. Small game doesn't, and they poop. A deer or elk trail was where I found some species.
And if you get "that feeling" then just take a moment to feel your surroundings. Maybe take a drink of water (easy to get dehydrated when it's raining).
One member here brought up a good point.. humans evolved to forage food. Even if your thought processes say "nah...", it might be worth taking a moment. Let the mushrooms sing to you.
Binoculars also help if you need to scan a huge field. Squat down, get low, whatever, scan from one corner of a field and from the opposite corner. Seriously I'm not kidding. I'd be sure no one's around because who uses binocs to stare at grass. I use a high vantage point up in the woods before it turns to pasture and holy jeeze it led me to libs and saved me a good 2 hours.
I'll be in the [other forum] and stop going off topic here. I'm sorry guys I just like to lend a hand even if I make an embarrassing mistake that someone could learn from.

Leratiomyces ceres,is a good indicator(Woodlovers) the others you mention seem to grow in various sub's. Concentrate on areas that have been disturbed and repaired buy city or county or state municipalities (Besides parks) Road widening, new schools.Restoration zones, green ways, wetland buffers.ect...Parks are a let down for the new guy. to much competition. Also. Most post are the same spot just different flushes. Believe that. Not to upset anyone, Just my opinion.

Logging roads, too, but be careful about getting stuck, lost, killed or cited for trespassing. One guy in my area claimed he got grazed by a solid shot of rock salt. I can attest it hurts a lot more than being tazed after getting your ass kicked.

Found my camera after visiting the first patch. Portland is looking good! Hunting Partner and I are doing great. Just stopped in for a lunch break. We've been out spreading spores and myc as well

Seriously you've observed pounds upon pounds of everything. Are these patches you frequent? Or just kind of walking around doing your thing?
Second picture is sexy. A shining example of how easy it is to step on them, and a good reason not to run over carelessly while stomping pins. Leaf litter is tricky!
Once again thank you for the stunning shots. I may hit PDX today en route to another spot since I hate driving into the sun. May as well take a breather and get some observing in
Edit: Thank you for spreading myc and spores. I'd like to hope there's a lot more people like you, whether they post here or not. Would you recommend liquid cultures? Because why not?

Found this lovely patch in PDX this morning. It is my first ever find and I am very happy with it. I assume they are cyans, and am doing spore prints right now should know in a few hours.
Growing in wood chips at edge of a garden, again I am assuming by what I have studied that these are cyans. They are bruising blue but not as much as I expected! The stem also snapped easier than I thought they would.

Here are closeups of the gills. They are mature and seem really different than some material I've read with perfect caps and such as examples -

If I am correct, are these too mature to consume? Also why the broken up caps? Is this a worm or animal?

Spore printing

Again, I've been pot hunting for about 9 months. This is my first shroomery post. Thanks again for all the info thus far. I have wet cardboard ready and foil being printed. I fully intend on spreading the love around PDX

First frost for most. One coastal species can fruit into January.
Hey guys should we start an official Novice/Amateur/Beginner thread as to not clutter up actives? No offense at anyone or aimed at anyone.
Knowledge is power and mycology is a respectable realm of study and inquiry.

I've seen some impressive cyanescens patches this year already, but this was really cool to see, especially since there was utter destruction of many spots right near by.
Psilocybe cyanescens growing from a rotting alder log overgrown by grass and bushes.

they were very well attached to the 6" diameter alder log.

Another park with habitat restoration and lots of overgrown woodchips had a large sprawling cyan patch among some mixed trees at the edge of grass, these were growing from buried rotten log also. Lots of pins, Not a single mature in that patch though, somebody is on top of that!

Psilocybe allenii from same campus as last year, different patches though. These and some cyans were the only mushrooms I saw there! Wish I could have gotten better pics... phone was dying, meter was running out, lighting was shit and people everywhere.

Some towns seem to provide the right habitat, and others don't. Idk if this is because of local landscaping companies or the trees that grow in an area. I've had good luck in parks, if you see others picking/hunting its usually a good sign though kinda feels like cheating that way. Riparian zones are good.
I've heard rumors of certain towns whose parks and recreation manager or something would colonize chips and then spread them all over town, though apparently it is no longer operated by these people.
Also some people just have more free time, I used to be to hunt all the time because I could do so on the way to places as well as just having a more open schedule. Now I only have 1 day off a week from work, so I can't do as much searching. As well as moving away from a town that had lots of patches I knew about, so I have no known spots to check... Starting from scratch

Are there any look alikes to azurescens on the coast? Here's my haul for the day. The mature ones just seem to have darker stipes, your opinions?

I've found a couple of patches of cyans that are intermingled with other species. In this case, I found young cyans clustered around something that isn't a cyan. Not sure what the yellow mushroom is. Maybe hypholoma fasciculare? I think all the look-alikes saved the nearby cyan patch from getting picked. Somebody turned over the non-cyans and kept going.

Ask83r azurescens tend to have a dingy brown or even redish stem in old age.
