went out finally this season, poked around bremerton but didnt have any finds, decided to take a drive a lil further from home and went to a park that seemed very likely to have some patches and got to find some.
Saw a couple other hunters, a guy and girl, who had just found a patch and had their hands full.
first a couple of stragglers I found after first arriving

and then a larger group

what-ok said: Found some more Cyans around PDX. We out here.
I'm headed there tomorrow morning, letting prints go in my trunk (cardboard, foil layers, push-pins!). If I can get some good ones I'm going to spore-water patches or habitats. If I come home with anything from the weekend in Astoria, I'll be stopping off in PDX to spread some love.
By the way, under a Japanese Maple with fresh red mulch had cyans galore. They must've redone it this year. I happened to look over while stopped and BOOM.
At the risk of them having their own patch I left them alone. =/ I mean, you never know.
Nice mush and nice habitat shots. I always appreciate those more than anything.

shroower said: Good luck for those in PDX. I walked probably 50 miles in the past few days back and forth of some parks, churches, etc. The only thing I found was a destroyed patch in one of the parks with mycelium spread everywhere. I know where to look, I know how they look like, I just can't find any, at all. Good old times in Brazil where I could find 100+ cubes in the field.
These wood lovers are much more camouflaged than I thought they could be I think. Amanitas though, those bastards are everywhere I look. Found a spot with probably 50+ growing gregariously.
Well, at least I'm not sedentary anymore
In PDX most of the easy to find patches are well known and get raped to shit the first week of the season. It's funny, I thought the active hunting would be awesome when I got here, turns out is was better in PA where I had miles of ovoid territory where I was the only active hunter. Here you find some, wait for them to grow a bit and the patch gets obliterated the next day. The destructive harvesting methods also keep the patches much smaller than they could be, in PA I found a patch that covered a good half acre of ground, you could harvest 10 pounds and still not have everything. Portland could be that good if retards stopped mining the patches and showed some respect to the fungus.
I've started a few discrete patches in low traffic areas and get enough for my own needs. If you really want actives in PDX and you're tired of the competition you should just start your own patches.
You can drive a bit to clear cuts around Mt. Hood and find pelliculosa though. I have yet to find any semilanceata, baeos, stunzii or anything like that, I think they're more rare in Stumptown than they are in other locales in the PNW.
Yup, no doubt. Apologies in advance for being OT, ( if this deserves a thread, then let it be) not trying to derail, but i'm in a sad way kind of glad to hear this. I thought it was down to poor hunting habits. I run across dugout patches all the time, in perfect habitat and wonder : was that spot just torn up and destroyed because it contains Cyans Buy some ignorant jerk looking out to get high or make money?
Are there no active mushrooms in Portland because idiots actively destroyed habitat? Or are there just no mushrooms in Portland? My one find in the city was a beautiful cluster of Cyans in a very very public park that I'm sure is frequently hunted. I know my find was extremely fortunate, nobody I have told about it believes me. (It is documented here though;-) ). A week later all the chips and pins (6?) were washed away in a large storm. I'm pretty sure that was somebody's project.
I just moved into a new neighborhood and I'm fairly certain that I'm the only one around here looking at least in the spots in which I am. But there is nothing. These chips need to be spored.
I'm suggesting a new campaign. It's nothing but in spirit right now, but perhaps it can be furthered in someway. Let's call it SPORE PDX NOW!

There are definitely actives in Portland, but yes, there are also a lot of good patches that are ripped to shit. Keep looking and you'll eventually find something virgin, or just start a patch of your own.

My hunting has been unfruitful so far while others are up to their eyeballs in shrooms... Do you need to find actives before you can start a patch? Or any other method to get it started?

You would need to find them first, or I suppose to buy a spore print from one of the vendors or members who sell or trade prints of a species you are interested in.

Went back to gather some of the larger ones still in good condition at one of my patches. I am starting to find some that are past prime, but I also found tons of fresh pins coming up in big groups. This spot has been non-stop since September.

I like the idea of sporing PDX. This may be a stupid question but would it be as simple as getting a syring and just squirting out onto a nice patch or grass or near some wooded areas? Or shaking some spores off a print outdoors? Or is there more to it than that?

Liquid cultures are better, but prepping them takes more work than sporewater. Neosporen had a tek somewhere. Sprinkling colonized rye grains from the jar over mulch is also very effective, takes a year or two to establish but then again, most woodlover projects do.

I have been finding cyans in Portland for over a month. One of three actives I've found in quantity in town. The only way to find them is to get out there and look for them, won't find any on the internet

I can second this. Ive found more in p town this year than in my 4 previous years hunting... it can be hard tho, the amount of hours ive already put into hunting this season feels like I should be finding more but hey...its about patience and im mean come on, they arent EVERYWHERE....what would be the fun in that anyways!?!?
And now yet another patch I found yesterday...
