I hit up a coastal overflow area. I needed to get away. Found a spot where I figured pickers would never go.
It was drizzling and the wind was blowing sand and stuck on anything wet. The tide was going out. I wasn't finding anything at first. You could hardly see them against the sand. When the tide rolled out and exposed them, and the rain cleaned em off just enough... boom.
Easiest hunt I've ever had. Less than a 2 mile walk, some grubbing around, and I'm expecting two dry ounces.
They were everywhere. And by everywhere I mean I couldn't walk a step in this place without walking on them. I couldn't believe it, I thought flooding post frost would mean gals and hyphos... but it also meant my first "out of a log" wild cyans find.
I've seriously never sat there with a huge Tupperware container just picking and tossing them in, moving over a few feet and repeating over and over again. I had to go back to my car for a backup.
Caps are a little thin on some. The stems, however, were hard as sticks. I thought I was pinching literal sticks with my hands in the brush.
They were all growing amongst hyphos and gals, but the sand blued them and when the rain came, the caps shined. Some I had to pour water on and some I wasn't taking the chance. Too little left on some.
I brought 2 gallons of slurry with me. Two gallons for two dry ounces I'll take it!

Oh. Sorry I'm baked.
I found my "motherload". I've been waiting all season for a huge spread of these things. It was everything I imagined it to be like. Here's some of the other weird fellas, for this weird fella.

Neat! Glad to see you finally got your big patch Dys. See what I mean about crawling on your hands and knees for 150 feet? No point in standing back up, just fill the bag.
RB, looking fantastic. Now I actually have to leave this couch and go check some spots.

Those pellies are gorgeous. Not just the specimens but the photography. Things look like they belong in a book. Well done dude, and good job. Dedication . I am impressed
I've never had the pleasure of hunting them. Gotta be gorgeous areas. I assume you guys hunt pelliculosa in 4-6 year old clear cuts?

Haha, yep! Dude it is amazing these things get flooded multiple times a day and still fruit like mad. On my way out the tide was coming back in pretty strong. I'd imagine these stem butts are going to be stronger than all else.
It looked like the flail threshers came through there a few weeks ago. My heart just dropped. Then I started to think of how long it would take for stuff to fruit and where fruitbody chunks would land. And, welp, that's where they all were.
I made a noob mistake. Got ahead of myself. I'm sliding my way across these little dips and valleys along the plain, picking and taking photos, and I look up and there's a guy walking his dog just looking at me. I had circled back to a path. Thought I was out further and going the other way. He laughs and shakes his head, says good finds man, and goes on his way. Thankfully he was cool but lesson learned... if that was anyone else it could've gone to shit.
The flail threshers did help tho; I mean I've "got it" as far as habitat goes, but when everything's been tossed apart and then starts to grow again it really starts to make sense.
And those pants you recommended helped too. Once I stood up I started to worry I had pickers knees, but was bone dry baby!
Edit edit: I keep seeing posts appear and disappear in this thread, or rearrange, very odd.

pants? Share the knowledge. I always have my hound and were hounding so i have my brush/waterproof pants on that slip right off when I'm back at the truck or pop out in a public spot. clean and dry. Ready to go about my regular business. When your working your hound. You dont use the trails you use the game trails. Perfect cover for theres nothing that needs to be covered up. Straight legit.

They're on a huge sales clearance at REI now. 34 inch Shuksan II rain pants with eVent fabric. There's 30 percent more off if you're an REI member.
I just slip them over my pants. When I'm done de-gearing, I'm bone dry and look like your normal guy. These and a matching coat and you can go from regular clothes to waterproof in half a minute even if you gotta change boots. The pants and coat rolled up barely take up a ziploc freezer bag.
I've had them catch on brambles before and they don't rip. I was convinced the other day I tore them. Thorns kind of just glide right off.
http://www.rei.com/media/product/883341
"Incredibly breathable and totally waterproof, these 34 in. inseam eVentâ„¢-fabric pants will keep you moving quickly and in comfort on rainy backpacking expeditions or alpine touring.
Durable waterproof, breathable shell pants for the backcountry and winter sports 3-layer ripstop nylon with eVent membrane Wind-resistant up to 50 MPH; seam-sealed Waistband has soft tricot lining and belt loops Gusseted crotch and articulated knees free up legs Side tabs and elastic-back waist fine-tune the fit Ankle zippers and snap tabs allow on / off over boots Cuffs have adjustable bungee drawcord and cordlock Zippered handwarmer pockets Water-resistant zippers."

Well, I figure if you're going to get outdoor gear at least get something good.. I'll likely also be using them for outdoor utility work once I get healthy and recovered. I figure I've been out a good fifty times in them, so like 3 bucks to save myself from freezing stinging rain. The matching coat is a miracle, too. Compact, light, fits anywhere. My only complaint are the zippers, they're hard to get open and closed but nothing gets wet. I've found myself out in 40 degrees with colder rain, only to spend a minute changing and be warm and dry. Throw on some insulated rubber boots and go wherever you want. It's so helpful, sedge just glides off you, you're not getting stuck in brambles or pricked. I'll get a lot of use out of them. They're overpriced but damn good at what they do. Slide them off real quick when done and you look like everyone else.
