This year has been intense. This is what I hear when I hunt. it's how I feel on my side anywho!

Here's a pic of one of those ovoids I was talking about. The allenii and ovoids seem to like this side of the trail and typically grow solo. The cyans/azures seem to favor the longer sloping dunes to the other side. The ovoids and allenii don't go too far down into the azure/cyan area but they seem to love hanging out together, at least for a little while, then the azures stop and the cyans make it the furthest before stopping at the pines.
Behind this is the Pacific, separated by scattered sedge, pine and fern.

At least I have an excuse for the terrible pic this time. Almost got busted over it. Ffs.

Id bet you're just finding azures. Highly doubt that is an ovoid, also I feel like it's way too cold for allenii also wrong habitat.
Pretty sure I know where you found that patch. Do they appear a little more brownish grey, shorter thicker stipes (compared to the azures) with the classic cyan wavy Margin? Growing kinda near the tree line? I was calling them cyans but once they dry they look just like the azures. Hunting the dunes Ive found 4 maybe 5 variations. I think azures have many different phenotypes. Also over the years Im sure I've found 2 kinds of cyan out there. Both different than the city variety. And the city variety changes from state to state! shit even patches in the same park are different sometimes. The spores all look the same under a microscope ( to me) I'd be interested in genetic study. This was the first year I spotted the ones you just posted. They were in a less hunted local all the other areas were trampled really bad this year. I stumbled upon this spot with pretty much zero trails and mush everywhere.
Side note I hunted clear cuts just below the snow line yesterday. Tons of hypholoma, galerina, etc but no pellies to post.

If that area just got cleaned out two days ago by the tweakers and the city crews started work the day of the frost then yes, probably the same place.
They only get grey like this on that particular side. But then the azure and cyans turn back to standard morphology closer to the dune ridge before stopping. Sometimes on the other side but then quickly become textbook. When they move towards the azures and cyans, they start looking more and more like each other, but then there are cyans sitting side by side that have to be a different variety. They're definitely not azures, unless they're really weird ones. I can't be this bad at psilocybe species this deep in the season but who knows I've only been at it a few months and have only pulled 750g or so. Maybe a little more.
As you move up and across the dune to where the cyans and azures are, the four of them start to share morphological anomalies. Ovoids start to get thicker stems as they meet the cyans/azures, and turn less grey. Azures grow very very tall in this area with tiny caps, but much much meatier than the ones 100 miles south.
I did just find out this morning that this spot is frequently spored/slurried by the locals. I wouldn't be surprised if someone managed to bring other species or phenotypes in (e.g., printing city ones and dropping them off at the coast closer to home).
I've noticed this only in places that have old harbors and docks that have since been thrown up onto the beach and buried.
And thank you for the microscope mention. I've got prints of these that threw up tan, black, purple and purple-black. I want to say azures are the majority, but the textbook cyans are also everywhere. I don't know what to think. They're like more flimsy than city cyans, almost feel like you're going to break them but they're rubbery and solid. They have more body than azures, too. Meatier but smaller, definitely a different "heft" in your hands.
Edit to add: This area, for as far north as it is, has been 60/50's up until two days ago. I've been watching the weather for weeks since it's so freaking far away.
Let me see if my picking buddy got our allenii shots. That might help.
Edit edit: I pulled this pic from the ovoid thread in the meantime. Some areas look exactly like this and the specimens also grow congregated towards the cans but sparse closer to the sea, and more gray.

Walking my dog yesterday as I do everyday, and making my usual rounds at the nearby college campus. I found about 7 small Cyanescens that definitely were not there just a week ago, nearby were mature and rotting Galerinas and other nasties. I suspect the cyan patch is young since it is very sparse and overall weak looking, so I decided to just leave them. I'll keep an eye on it just to see where they end up.
The groundskeepers use a giant heap of wood chips to maintain the entire campus. One of my earlier season patches was within 20 feet of the heap. Im thinking this whole campus will be infested with Cyanescens In the coming years.
Here's my urban Cyanescens foraging tip for beginners like myself: Look for the habitat not the mushroom. Not all wood chips are a suitible habitat. The freshly cut chips never have a single mushroom -- but the older, slightly decayed bleached ones have all sorts of mushrooms popping up. When you find the right chips it's just a matter of time (and timing) until you find what you're looking for. Look in plain sight. Look where others don't think to look. If you see footprints or litter, don't bother looking further. There are so many actives out there, you just need to be concise, thorough and imaginative.

Went to a very popular spot the other day. The fact that the cyans are popping again after the freeze seems to have spread far and wide. My lady and I went there to pick and saw a couple people picking. Wasnt surprised to see people, but as we walked up and got closer, it was obvious that they were picking with a small child, about 6 or so, and an infant in hand....
We were like...."woa!!" The little kid as stepping lightly and scanning the ground like the rest of us do. Now im not one to judge, especially as these people could be members here but dayam!! Your teaching your children!? The scariest/stupidest part is what if yall get in trouble picking illegal mushrooms!? What will happen to the kids!? In a perfect world they would be legal, then this would be WWWAAYYY more acceptable...
But hey, maybe this is why they acted all sketch when we walked up to the same area they were picking. They sort of avoided us, going to the other multiple spots in the park where we werent... i understand this because well.... theyre picking illegal psychedelic mushrooms with their children.......

These were some of the beauts I witnessed while getting absolutely soaked...

That poor spot gets trampled and ravaged every year. The weird thing is it just keeps getting bigger.
In that same park I found some chunky cyans growing out of the grass under a Doug fir, not a chip in sight. They seemed to be growing out of downed and buried twigs and cone bits. There's so much cool stuff there.

Ya, first year I found it for me. I have been trying to be very conscious about not picking too many mushrooms, or picking them too small. So I have missed out on tons of mushrooms from there! Too many people not with the same mindset i guess. With that being said I still picked a lot of mushrooms. So many mushrooms.
Also, ive been spreading the mycellium in other spots around there too, in hopes to keep it spreading and thriving...

There's been a lot of respectful picking and sharing this year. Sometimes it's fun to sit back for an hour and watch the shifts of people come work the patch.

Those without the veil broken are going to taste good and be potent; keep those in your head stash. Glad you got back out there, and that they're fruiting. Keep up on the spore slurry in microclimates even if it's late Good job dude, I told you you were good at this.

Those pins are going to dry up to be next to nothing, complete waste. You really should wait and let them grow to maturity. Do what you want, I don't think my lecture will correct your bad practices, but I think you are exhibiting a lack of patience indicative of a lack of self control. Just my opinions when I see people proudly displaying pins they pulled from the ground. Can't help but think about how those will dry up to be hardly anything, not even worth the trouble.

Thanks man could've got more but u know how that goes fucking ppl left n right think I passed 2 lady pickers . Yeah the cyan patch is dead they've done a lot of weedeating too. Its just post frost shit. Didn't see any pins or anything they'll be back soon though. Hey old hag fuck off man OK it's been frosting n shit those pins were sitting there for like 2 weeks to a month. Wanna know how I know I've been watching them the whole time they just sprouted up a little and got fat in the stems so fuck off man I take care of the earth it'll take care of me. And the one that looks like a lonely pin is actually a stem with the cap removed.
