Theres big savings in getting new, energy efficient, household appliances!
    #22188594 - 09/04/15 03:23 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

My clothes dryer broke down, it served me for many years but, it went. I decided to use the powers of the internet to go shop for the very best choice within my budget for its successor.

"Dumb" machines have gotten a whole lot less dumb over the years

Long story short I was amazed at the new technologies, read a ton of reviews, professional and consumer, and settled on a pretty high tech one featuring a heat pump, self cleaning condenser and a whole bunch of useful features, like being fairly quiet and above all.. being highly energy efficient.

Its awesome. This new thing uses only 1/3 of the electricity of the old one. One third! Whipping out my calculator I saw to my amazement that in a few years the new appliance will have paid for itself in energy savings. It would literally pay for itself and I'd start saving money so I'm better off that my old appliance broke than that it kept going!

If something breaks down in your household research the crap out of what to get next, and mind energy efficiency. Most household appliances cost more in the amount of power consumed over their lifetime than the purchase price.

You can actually come out ahead if you do the math.

Fridges, freezers, washing machines and central heating units have gotten a lot better too.

I like my dumb appliances.  They can't take pictures of me raiding the fridge or the pile of clothes in the laundry room...

My front loading HE washing machine is way better on water and spins the clothes so much faster that they take a fraction of the time to dry.  Easily my favorite of all the more efficient appliances of late.

One of these weeks I get to try out my new LG washer and dryer.  They do look fancy.  Been in the box about a year waiting for me to get the room ready for them.

Might as well consider not replacing it at all if it's not really a necessity. I've never had a clothes dryer - oh, the energy I've 'saved'!

mine has been fantastic, it also dries my clothes if I need it to but even the
dryer is about 1/3 of the time for the cycle and get things dryer than the
conventional ones I've had

I don't know why you US people persisted with top loading washers and dryers for so long, we haven't had them in the UK since like the 1960s.

Obviously a front loader will be better because when it spins the clothes get tumbled by gravity rather than just sat on the bottom of the drum.

But yeah modern ones are great. However they make a big thing of using very little water, which is a bit of a concern as I'd like the cleaning chemicals properly rinsed off my dishes and clothes.
