My clothes dryer broke down, it served me for many years but, it went. I decided to use the powers of the internet to go shop for the very best choice within my budget for its successor.
"Dumb" machines have gotten a whole lot less dumb over the years
Long story short I was amazed at the new technologies, read a ton of reviews, professional and consumer, and settled on a pretty high tech one featuring a heat pump, self cleaning condenser and a whole bunch of useful features, like being fairly quiet and above all.. being highly energy efficient.
Its awesome. This new thing uses only 1/3 of the electricity of the old one. One third! Whipping out my calculator I saw to my amazement that in a few years the new appliance will have paid for itself in energy savings. It would literally pay for itself and I'd start saving money so I'm better off that my old appliance broke than that it kept going!
If something breaks down in your household research the crap out of what to get next, and mind energy efficiency. Most household appliances cost more in the amount of power consumed over their lifetime than the purchase price.
You can actually come out ahead if you do the math.

The new technology doesnt last nearly as long, they put in plastic parts so they break faster/more easily. What you think is savings actually costs more in the long run on your money and on pollution.

i love new tech too. Always new and better coming out.
we currently have an all-in-one washer AND dryer unit. Its not new, but its probably from 2005 i would guess.
Its badass, never have to switch between the dryer or washer. Its made in Italy. They got all the cool stuff.
Im excited about new dishwashers. Current ones suck ass at cleaning dishes. New ones got all sort of steam cleaning technology.
Cant wait for a new one, handwashing kinda sucks
